  5. What am I reading?

The Viaduct Killings by Wes Markin, set in Knaresborough in Yorkshire, which is what attracted me to the book, but I am enjoying it. Cosy Crime backdrop but the true story is in the characters, the interplay between them and their history.

Also, Ancient Rome by Simon Baker - you can guess from the title what it is about! It's based on a BBC TV series, though I didn't know that when I chose it, but that hasn't stopped me enjoying it, and learning something.

  7. Finally getting back on track with my manga reading. I had a 6 week break, but now I'm back at it again.

First one I read was Mai Ball! volume 12. I like this manga less and less. The erotic slice of life football story focused more and more on the sport aspect, which is the least interesting to me. The art style is still amazing and occasionally there's some erotic moments, but it's mostly just yuri bait and everyone's way too young, so it also feels icky to the max.

Only four more volumes to go on that one, so that's good news.

Next up is Delicious in Dungeon, a manga I actually enjoy reading.

  9. Just finished reading "The Beast Player" by Nahoko Uehashi. I had already watched the anime, but it had been so king I didn't remember all the details. While the anime was great, the book is even better, and it's going to be high on my list of things to recommend to my children when they're old enough to read for fun.

The neurodivergent representation is cool, as is the deep central question of interspecies bonds and the political possibilities and dangers they entail. Uehashi handles the exploration of that question well in my judgment, including appropriate ambiguity without muddying moral clarity. Elin is a truly fantastic protagonist, not without flaws but nevertheless a excellent role model and a very sympathetic figure without being pitiful.

One thing I really love about Uehashi's writing is that she's not shy about using interior narration to tell the reader directly what a variety of characters are feeling, but when she does this she focuses on human contradictions, quirks, and weaknesses that make those characters feel much richer, and that remind the reader of all the ways our weird and sometimes contradictory or inexplicable quirks guide our actions just as much as both logical thought and predictable/expected feelings. None of the characters is an unerring source of wisdom, with every grand principle presented shown to have its weaknesses and biases, and even the wisest characters making mistakes and learning from them.

Overall, a wonderful book, and having also seen the "Seirei no Moribito" anime but not read the books, I'm excited to dig into more of Uehashi's extensive catalog.

  11. Sometimes you see what is about to happen in a book and it’s not that you don’t want to finish the book, but you do pause it and consume 2 or 3 volumes of P.G. Wodehouse before you can go on. 😔

  15. Just read "Come and Get It" by Kiley Reed. I really liked it.

The cover of the edition I read made it look like Romance but it's not. There's a lesbian love story, but it's not a genre Romance.

It reminded me a bit of the Altman film "Shortcuts". There's no conventional plot. It follows a number of characters with quite an intimate point of view that made them relatable where otherwise they might be unlikeable. They start making small bad decisions, which escalate till you're kind of wincing and waiting for the inevitable train wreck.

There's no clear message or lesson, just people being messy and vulnerable.

I found the writer's observations, of the character and setting, remarkably vivid. Small details of concise description, hyper specific and precise.

Content warning for a dog dying in quite an upsetting way.

In From Terror to Valor, Jack Debaut is drawn into a deadly world of covert operations and dangerous secrets, where allies can become enemies and trust can cost everything.

  19. I've finished: It Lasts Forever and Then It's Over by Anne de Marcken

What if the afterlife was zombie land?

This isn't a survival action movie. It is not about losing yourself to mindless hunger.

It is a meditation on grief, loss and decay. We get glimpses into the mind of a widow living as a zombie. Processing her grief over losing her husband, losing parts of her self.

We follow her as she observes other communities and individuals as they find their own way of handling the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse.

It is a wonderful zombie novella for people who hate zombie novels.

  21. Second on my list of favorite white-haired lady sleuths of the 1900s is Miss Maud Silver.

Then there’s another English woman, retired governess Miss Maud Silver, with her bog-oak brooch and her practical logic. She’s the creation of Patricia Wentworth. GREY MASK is first in the 32-book series, and was written in 1928 — two years before Miss Marple appeared on the scene.

I’ve just finished reading Sierra Six by Mark Greaney.

Although it’s outside of my preferred genres I find I can sometimes come across ideas which I can rewrite into a fantasy setting, perhaps coming up with something a little different in the process.

As a throwaway thriller, the plot’s not worthy of discussion, but I was tickled pink to learn that Signal, an App used for communication between members of the Unreal Writers is also said to be an application favoured by clandestine operatives. Cool, Huh?

  26. Have finished 'Balcony Over Jerusalem' by John Lyons. It's showing its age (published 2017), but was on this list: abc.net.au/news/2024-11-22/isr

I was reading specifically for insights into how local people feel about each other ... there was some information, but not enough for my liking. There was also quite a lot of information about how foreign journalists are treated by Israel and lobby groups like the AIJAC.

Feel free to recommend books on a similar topic for me!

  28. Kobo thinks I should (re)read Brave New World. I do not remember it other than that I adored it (did we read these with Miss Joyner?) so hell, it's free, why not. Downloaded that puppy. Their summary of it is totally relevant: Made the hair stand up on the back of my neck reading it. It is ironic that it is AI that dubbed it a "94% match" to my reading interests.
