  1. I am 66 books into this year, and next up I shall be rereading this one. I have it on my Kindle (other ebook readers are available) but feel that I need an actual physical copy sitting on my politics shelf.

Desc: Hannelore, just married. Has her bad timing struck again. (Last EP)

โ€œExcuse me, I have research I wish to finish.โ€ Duke Ferdinand said to Hannelore and Rozemyne. Then he turned his back and left.

Most people would have considered his response extremely rude. After all, he had #just married Hannelore of Dunkelfelger, but Rozemyne, his first wife, was used to it, and Hannelore knew the wedding had only been to please Rozemyne.

โ€œDonโ€™t let it worry you,โ€ Aub Rozemyne said. โ€œHeโ€™s like thatโ€”Shall I show you the library?โ€

Hannelore blinked. They had barely returned from their wedding, and neither of them was acting like it was a big deal. Surely Rozemyne at least would be clingy and mushy; after all, sheโ€™d been the one sending romantic gifts. โ€œCould I have been wrong about the whole thing? Was it just a political match? What about love and romance? Itโ€™s my cursed timing again, isnโ€™ it!โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s the old me,โ€ she thought. โ€œBut Iโ€™m not โ€˜Cry Baby Hanneโ€™ anymore. This is my reality, and Iโ€™m going to make the best of it. If she doesnโ€™t love me, Iโ€™ll pin her down and do quests until she does!โ€

    โ€œSure, I would love that,โ€ she said.

โ€œGreat, Book Wives Forever!โ€ Rozemyne pumped her fist and led the way.

The Aub waved to a servant to take the food away. โ€œSend my daughter in.โ€

Hannelore soon appeared, apprehension etched into every line of her face. But unlike when she was younger, there was no sign of her wilting. She was prepared for whatever her parents had to tell her.

Her father waved to a seat, and when his daughter complied, he said, โ€œItโ€™s settled. You are to be Duke Ferdinandโ€™s second wife. Itโ€™s slightly beneath your station, but a good match nonetheless. It will bring our two duchies closer and ensure preferred access to Rozemyne's innovations. A good marriage is the #lynchpin of long-term diplomacy.โ€

The tension in Hanneloreโ€™s face eased. โ€œI welcome Versprechredi's blessing. At last my timing has been good.โ€

โ€œIndeed, the goddess has blessed you,โ€ her mother said. โ€œWe were worried you would settle for a loveless marriage. Kenntrips and Rasantark are fine men, but you were never taken with them in that way. I am overjoyed that you have found a useful and loving match. It's a surprising and somewhat unusual arrangement, but Rozemyne is an unusual woman. Take care to stay in her favor; you can expect only what duty demands from Ferdinand.โ€

โ€œIt surprised me as well, but I think I can be happy with Rozemyne,โ€ Hannelore replied.

โ€œGood, good.โ€ The duke rejoined the discussion. โ€œFerdinand sent engagement presents.โ€

The girl looked at the books her father had passed her. A wry expression came to her face as she read the titles: โ€œThe History of Ahrensbach,โ€ โ€œAhrensbach Legal Codex,โ€ and a new volume called โ€œThe Legislative Decrees of Aub Rozemyne.โ€

The Aub coughed. โ€œHe said they would be useful to you since youโ€™ll be living in Alexandria soon.โ€

โ€œThe man doesnโ€™t have a romantic bone in his body,โ€ Sieglinde said. โ€œBut Rozemyne sent this,โ€ passing her daughter a manuscript titled โ€œThe Romance of Vegalinde and Altairhart.โ€ โ€œShe said you would be the very first person to read it.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t forget the other present,โ€ Werdekrf added. โ€œIt's much better than those old books. It will look wonderful on you.โ€ If anyone had doubted his feelings towards his daughter, his fond smile revealed his deeper feelings.

The item he handed her was a headdress featuring a new design of tiny lace edelweiss intertwined with cornflowers. Its net-like cap was set with pearls, and a dyed silk train flowed down the back.

Her mother looked from the hairpiece to her daughter. She too had a soft smile. โ€œIt will look lovely at your wedding. You'll be quite the trendsetter.โ€

  9. Broken Hill in the Living Desert

In this post: The city of Broken Hill, how it got its name, and the living desert that surrounds it. Plus some desserts.

This is the blog of Mark Wordsworm, the travelling worm. Iโ€™m a 40-year-old bookmark (give or take a few years) and I proudly boast my own Hallmark serial number, 95 HBM 80-1. Youโ€™ll probably want to read all about me and my Travelling Companion (the TC).

    Todayโ€™s travel notes

Me and the TC recently made a big trek westwards from Sydney, to explore parts of NSW and South Australia. Broken Hill was one of the places on our bucket list.

    The book Iโ€™m in

The Ten Year Affair by Erin Somers. Iโ€™m nestled in near the start of this book, getting to know the characters and the situations they manage to get themselves into. So far, itโ€™s a warm and amusing experience.

    Travel tips

Take an early morning stroll in the living desert, but make sure you donโ€™t get lost. Itโ€™s big country: Large landscapes, rolling hills, and a lot of sameness.

    Recommended restaurants and bakeries

The Silly Goat is excellent for brunch. Their sweets looked scrummy, though we didnโ€™t endulge this time.

The Musicians Club provides a good nosh-up for dinner. Their citrus tart is a delicious dessert.

The Deli presented us with delicious, gluten free cakes, a little like muffins.

    The photos

Me at the top of the Line of Lode (itโ€™s a mine dump), with the city of Broken Hill spread out below:

Why the name โ€œBroken Hillโ€? The city is named after a range of ragged rocky outcrops that looked as if it had a break in it. The broken hill itself has since disappeared. It turned out to contain the worldโ€™s largest ore seam of silver lead, and zinc. After the resulting mining spree, the hill is now a large flat mine dump, part of which is still being mined.

The mine dump is called the Line of Lode. Letโ€™s put on our wings (this worm is still patiently awaiting the day that I morph into a beautiful winged creature) and zoom some distance away from Broken Hill. This shot shows the Line of Lode and the city:

Due to the wealth of silver, zinc, and lead in its rock, Broken Hill became a bit of a trend setter in mining matters. Mining revenue supported the new nation of Australia in no small way. The mining and minerals technology developed in the city were adopted worldwide, as were many of the financing practices. Some of todayโ€™s large mining companies owe their beginnings to the miners at Broken Hill. Take BHP Billiton for example: BHP comes from the companyโ€™s former name, โ€œBroken Hill Proprietary Company Limitedโ€.

The Line of Lode is part museum, part working mine. Derelict structures greet you as you make your way to the top:

Erected on top of the Line of Lode is a memorial to the miners who contributed so much to the city and the country. More than 800 people have died during mining activities here. The memorial shows names of deceased miners in columns lined with dusky pink roses, along with each personโ€™s date and manner of death. This photo shows but a few of the names. The list stretches for several more panels:

    The city of Broken Hill

The Line of Lode looms large from the city too. On Sulphide street, the 30-metre high mullock (an Australian term for a hill of mining waste) lurks behind the Palace Hotel:

The streets in the city are named after the ores mined and the chemicals used in the mining process. Hereโ€™s Argent Street:

The Broken Hill Courthouse is also on Argent Street:

Several areas in the city are designated alcohol free zones, in a bid to improve public safety. In these areas, itโ€™s illegal to consume alcohol 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:

A big ant prowls Crystal Lane. This impressive creature is part of the pavement art created for the โ€œBeyond The Dustโ€ festival in 2025:

Above the streets, Corellas lurk. Like this one, which looks like a somewhat jaded reveller with its soiled feathers and splodged eye shadow:

    Living Desert State Park

Twenty minutesโ€™ drive from Broken Hill, along Nine Mile Road, is the Living Desert State Park. We were lucky to see the desert even more alive than usual, due to the unusual amount of rain the region has had over the past several months. The desert was covered in green shrubbery, even outside the park.

The park itself is well worth a visit. The entry fee is $10 per person, payable at an automated pay point beyond the gate. The payment system is eccentric. Itโ€™s unmanned, just a machine, and accepts card only. When we arrived, there were a few confused people wandering around looking for help. Eventually, by group effort, we all made it through the system and into the park.

Video: Itโ€™s mid morning in the Living Desert State Park. Several kangaroos bound across a bowl-shaped valley below us:

    https://youtu.be/enYrbjHXKDo

The next video shows more kangaroo action, later in the day. Itโ€™s approaching sunset. Two kangaroos tap each other playfully with their paws. Being but a small worm in a large world, Iโ€™m not sure what type of kangaroo or wallaby these are. Theyโ€™re reddish in colour, with rather endearing tufty hairstyles:

    https://youtu.be/eXMB2jBakyk

As the sun goes down, sculptures make interesting shapes at the top of a hill in the park:

We left Broken Hill early next morning, driving into the sunrise:

    Thatโ€™s all for today, folks.

โ€œDither, dither, dither!โ€ Sieglinde's words echoed in the private dining chamber where she sat with her husband. Taking a deep breath, she swallowed her next words. โ€œAre you an idiot?!โ€

Werdekrf wilted in his chair, his dinner half consumed. His wife had held back the whole time the Archdukeโ€™s Conference was underway. But her cold fury had been evident. Now that they were home, it looked like she was going to let loose.

The Aub was pleased when she continued in a more reasonable tone. โ€œWeโ€™re lucky Duke Ferdinand didnโ€™t walk out on us. You know his views on dither.โ€ Sarcasm crept into her voice as she imitated her husbandโ€™s voice and words. โ€œโ€˜We really canโ€™t consent unless there is a wedding dither match.โ€™ Would you make Hannelore Eifersuneidโ€™s daughter?โ€ (The goddess had unrequited feelings for Chaocipher, the goddess of chaos.)

โ€œIt seemed an excellent opportunity, and I gave it up as soon as he resisted.โ€ The Aub pushed away his food and pretended to study the tapestry depicting a dither match.

โ€œWhat if he had taken offense? The #Sovereignty had approved the proposed engagement. The Zent wouldnโ€™t have been pleased if this match had fallen through. More importantly, Hannelore is excited. Just think how it would affect her if she were thrown over a second time. Has Jugereise not visited her enough?โ€ (Goddess of Separation, associated with lost love and separation.)

โ€œYou are right, of course. Sometimes you win dither by playing the long game. Hannelore can teach them the love of the game once she is there.โ€

Sieglinde rolled her eyes but said no more. Arguing with her dither-crazed husband was futile.

After the greetings, Eglantineโ€™s maid sampled the food and drink to assure everyone that nothing had been poisoned. Tea and snacks were soon in hand, and the Zent began: โ€œI hope you will pardon Schutzariaโ€™s hand in our affairs, but swift winds are required to obtain Gebordnungโ€™s blessings.โ€

Rozemyne knit her brow as she #puzzled out the meaning: โ€œPardon the sudden summons, but it is necessary to maintain order.โ€ Even though she was used to it, she still wished nobles would speak clearly rather than masking everything behind metaphors.

Eglantine continued, โ€œI understand, Duke Ferdinand, you will seek Versprechrediโ€™s blessings. This comes as a surprise and has stirred up the other duchies, especially Korinthsdaum where Eifersuneid whispers council. So, to avoid Chaocipher attendance this year, I would ask if this is true.โ€

Rozemyne decoded the message again. Understanding what Versprechrediโ€™s blessing meant was easy; Duke Ferdinand would seek a wife. Next, Eifersuneid was the god of jealousy and whispered in Sigiswald, ruler of Korinthsdaumโ€™s ear. No surprise there. Finally, Chaocipher was the goddess of chaos, which meant Eglantine wanted to avoid the council descending into disarray.

Ferdinand put down his tea with a slight clink, showing his irritation, but spoke calmly. โ€œMy wife, the Aub, has expressed a wish to cement our relations with Dunkelfelger by making Lady Hannelore my second wife. Her friendship with Rozemyne leads me to believe it would be a good match. The Aub has been handling all the arrangements. We have exchanged gifts, and I received the following.โ€ He laid the handkerchief embroidered with intertwining cornflowers and edelweiss on the table. โ€œWe didnโ€™t think we needed to consult with the Sovereignty first, but I assume we have your approval, Zent.โ€

Eglantine didnโ€™t react to the jab or the slight inflection on her title. Instead, she looked at Rozemyne. โ€œI didnโ€™t realize. I knew you were friends, but without Schicksantracht, I had not foreseen Versprechredi.โ€

She turned back to Ferdinand and said, โ€œYou have my blessing, of course. I will make sure the other duchies know you have my approval. Have you formally spoken to Hanneloreโ€™s parents yet?โ€

    โ€œThatโ€™s next,โ€ he replied.

Zent Eglantineโ€™s chief scholar, Roswitha, greeted Alexandriaโ€™s arriving rulers. If the pair hadnโ€™t been expecting her, they would have been stunned by the arrogance of the โ€œinvitationโ€ she offered. As it was, Ferdinand frowned throughout Roswithaโ€™s speech. They weren't even being allowed to settle in before being rushed off to meet the Zent.

Rozemyne recalled Ferdinandโ€™s thoughts when they were first informed that an invitation was pending: โ€œThis is just what I was afraid of. Give a person the crown, and they will begin to throw their weight around. Be prepared, if she tries to bully us, Iโ€™ll flatten her.โ€

    Rozemyne replied, โ€œEglantine is a #friend. Sheโ€™ll have a good explanation for this.โ€

โ€œShe had better. You would be advised to remember that friendship has no place in royal politics. Nor should it in inter-duchy relations. Her job is to ensure the welfare of the Sovereignty and Yurgenschmidt. Ours is to look after the interests of Alexandria. Please remember that.โ€

Rozemyne nodded. Any other response would have precipitated a full-on scolding.

That conversation had taken place in Alexandria, but now they were at the Royal Academy for the Archduke Conference, faced with a โ€œtea party.โ€ She always dreaded these gatherings, and this one sounded worse than usual with Ferdinand in a bad mood and some serious, unknown business at hand.

Fortunately, Roswitha gave Rozemyne little time to worry, instead leading them straight to a meeting room richly decorated in the current Sovereignty style. Thick tapestries covered the walls illustrating various religious scenes. A centuries-old oak table lay in the center of the room, surrounded by chairs with luxurious cushions. A selection of tea and treats was laid out, including old-fashioned, heavy, sugary pastries, as well as many of Aub Rozemyneโ€™s lighter creations.

Under other circumstances, Rozemyne would have been delighted to see the Zent display her goods, but not today. This wasnโ€™t a friendly social tea, but something serious.

  16. Westwards through Wagga Wagga

In this post: Isnโ€™t the whole interior of Australia made of red dust and clay? Thatโ€™s what this worm has always been told. But not so.

Me and the TC have just returned from an epic trip into Australiaโ€™s outback. We drove west and north for three days, drove around a bit, then drove back for three days. We discovered a huge land covered in shades of green with the red earth glowing through.

On the first day of the trip, we drove from Sydney on the east coast to Wagga Wagga, slightly more than a third of the way across the state of New South Wales. Wagga Wagga is the largest inland city in New South Wales.

What does the name Wagga Wagga mean?

Firstly, why isnโ€™t it just โ€œWaggaโ€? Well, the local Wiradjuri language uses repetition to show the plural. So, โ€œWagga Waggaโ€ indicates more than one โ€œWaggaโ€. Several languages use repetition like this, including Malay / Indonesian.

The word itself, โ€œwaggaโ€, means โ€œdanceโ€ in Wiradjuri. Wagga Wagga is therefore the place of dances. Until recently, the official interpretation was โ€œplace of many crowsโ€, but the Wagga Wagga city council set that straight in 2019.

Informally, you can call the city just โ€œWaggaโ€. Everyone knows what you mean.

    The book Iโ€™m in

Shroud by Adrian Tchaikovsky. If you want to think about what form alien life might take, and what it might feel like to meet that life, then this is the book for you. Itโ€™s terrifying and fascinating. The best of SciFi.

    Travel tips

Have two drivers if you can. Australia is a big country and the roads are long. Being able to swap drivers every couple of hours, and having someone to talk to, helps avoid driving off the road by mistake. This type of message from your GPS is not uncommon: 585 km to your next turn:

(Savvy readers will notice that the location of this map is Broken Hill, from another day of our trip. Heh, call it artistic licence to include the screenshot in this post.)

    Recommended restaurant

Nabihaโ€™s Kitchen, Baylis Street, Wagga Wagga. Visit this place for a charming and authentic Lebanese meal. The warm welcome and intimate atmosphere make it feel like youโ€™re having a meal in someoneโ€™s home kitchen. Take the time to chat with Nabiha and her daughter, Vicky, to learn the story of the restaurant and the family that owns it.

    The photos

Me at Wagga train station. This tablet was unveiled a couple of months before the TC was born (bless her woolly booties):

We took the Old Hume Highway into Wagga. The TC was expecting Wagga to be in the middle of flat country and arid red dirt. But no, it was green!

Sunlight through clouds and a line of skeleton trees on an undulating horizon ushered us into Wagga:

A pile driver obliged with an atmospheric rhythm as we crossed the Murrumbidgee River (there were roadworks nearby). On the other side of the river, rolling green hills spread out before us:

    https://youtu.be/sOrWRu3I0TE

On the way into the city, we stopped at Marrambidya Wetland for a walk. These gum trees were enjoying a puddle:

The TC is a bit of a twitcher. Hence the next picture, of a fairy wren similarly enjoying a puddle. Bird watching is not a great pastime for a travelling companion of mine, yours truly being a worm and all. But I stay safely hidden in my book at times like these.

    Double trouble:

Wagga itself has restful, wide streets. Thereโ€™s every type of shop, supermarket, and service that you might need. A big-name road runs through the town: Sturt Highway.

    Wagga railway station:

Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is the largest hospital in the region, servicing the city and surrounding areas. The hospital was first founded in 1856, and has undergone several reconstructions since then, the latest being completed in 2023:

The next picture shows Sturt Highway, four hours west of Wagga: a flat, wide horizon with the road disappearing into the distance. This is more like what I expected of the view, except that itโ€™s all green!

    Thatโ€™s all for today, folks.

    replaced "cron" by systemd/timed" etc.

What is the experience of other users in this environment after the update ?
Do I have to fix the "HPB down" problem prior to the update ?
DO I have to enable the 5 AI services prior to the update ?
