English author Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond was born back in 1908.

The influence of Bond in the cinema and in literature is evident to this day as can be seen in both films and books and has launched numerous franchises such as Austin Powers and Jason Bourne

The Eon Productions series of Bond films, which started in 1962 with Dr. No, continued after Fleming's death.

Along with two non-Eon produced films, there have been twenty-five Bond movies to date, and the series has grossed over $6.2 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing film series of all time.

I guess I should add our appetite for the genre Fleming established remains undimmed as can be seen from recent TV reimaginings such as The Night Agent and Slowhorses.

  6. #ScribesAndMakers 28 May: Our next featured creator is a serial writer. Have you ever written serials?

Whilst engaging in the Novel November Challenge last year I posted my daily progress on Scribble Hub as a way of keeping track of the story.

When I decided to self-publish the resultant novel, How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List, I deleted all traces of it.

The man who gave us Sam Spade, Nick and Nora Charles, along with the Continental Op, Dashiell Hammet, was born on this day back in 1894.

He popularised Hard-boiled detective fiction as a genre and we’re indebted to him to this day.

On the subject of this genre and how it differed from the Golden Age of Detective Fiction in the words of his successor Raymond Chandler, it gave murder back to the kind of people that commit it for reasons, not just to provide a corpse; and with the means at hand, not with hand-wrought duelling pistols, curare, and tropical fish...

  16. #WritersCoffeeClub 27. Do you read outside of the genre you write?

Absolutely, I’ve got a two novel a week habit to support along with a compulsion to write two novels a year.

I need the ideas. I read: SF; fantasy; horror; crime; thrillers; humour; and even the occasional historical novel, helps to fuel the imagination.

I mainly write urban fantasy which can end up being a mash-up of all the above mentioned genres.

  21. #PennedPossibilities 1025: Would you or have you ever killed off a member of the main cast? How would or how did you feel afterward?

It’s not just kids who have imaginary friends, there is another class of person who, if pressed, might admit to having an imaginary friend, those curious individuals who describe themselves as writers or authors.

I’m afraid I’m guilty as charged. My imaginary friends manifest themselves as the characters in my series of novels.

As far as they are concerned they’re blessed to enjoy my friendship, but they’re unaware I’m watching out for them as they pursue the adventures I’ve set in motion.

They can be quite wilful in their ways, on occasion they’re capable of doing something I’d never imagine they’d do instead of sticking to the story I’ve plotted out for them.

Having characters that choose to do as they please can be frustrating and surprising but makes for an interesting experience.

They have a tendency to second guess my intentions, yet I’m too fond of them to go down the route of kill your darlings.

However, my protagonist, Nathan, has apparently died on at least three occasions over the course of the series.

When asked how come he’s still alive his usual response is to say, ‘It didn’t take.’

  31. 1023. Who would you personally trust the most out of your cast of characters?

I know I’ve mentioned Nathan, my protagonist, is a bit of a rogue and that his partner, Vicky, can be trigger-happy when it comes to protecting him but together they make a great team who are always looking out for their friends and are devoted to maintaining the magical community’s anonymity.

So, I reckon they're mostly trustworthy.

I know it’s Towel Day today but bear with me, I enjoy alluding to works in the same genre and add playful references to some of the common tropes found in fantasy fiction, which I hope will be appreciated by the more knowledgeable reader.

Take towel, replace with trowel, it’s a no brainer.

One of my characters has the unusual job title of Emergency Response Archaeologist (don’t ask, it’s complicated).

She’s proud of the fact that she always knows where her trowel is, as it marks her out as an archaeologist to be reckoned with.

  41. #PennedPossibilities 1014. If it came down to it, would your SC choose to protect the MC in a dangerous situation?

I’ve mentioned before how Vicky, my deuteragonist, is fiercely protective of Nathan, her partner.

She’s extremely possessive and over-protective of him to a ridiculous extent.

Anyone who threatens him is in dire danger given her habit of hurling fire-balls around if she feels he’s in any danger.

Tanith Lee, a British science fiction and fantasy writer died on this day back in 2015.

She wrote more than 90 novels and 300 short stories and was the winner of multiple awards for her writing.

Today, she’s become a largely forgotten master whose work is underappreciated and underrated.

Probably best known for her breakthrough novel, The Birthgrave (1975), Drinking Sapphire Wine (1977), and Night’s Master (1978).

I was originally drawn to reading her because of her witchy sounding name which is actually derived from the name
Tanit, an ancient Carthaginian lunar goddess in the Punic pantheon.

I also forgot to add she wrote two episodes of the BBC science fiction series Blake's 7, "Sand" and "Sarcophagus."
