1843 – Brunel's steamship the SS Great Britain is launched, becoming the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull and screw propeller, becoming the largest vessel afloat in the world.
1977 – The world's first Global Positioning System (GPS) signal was transmitted from Navigation Technology Satellite 2 (NTS-2) and received at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at 12:41 a.m. Eastern time (ET).
1983 – The first three-dimensional reconstruction of a human head in a CT is published.
*Events selected are not necessarily positive/happy/to-be-celebrated, but items I thought were historically interesting and/or significant to their time and I'm trying to select items from a broad range of history and not clumped too close together.

Today marks 25 years since the original release of Final Fantasy X in Japan back in 2001. An entry that marked several firsts for the series: it was the first Final Fantasy game for the PlayStation 2, the first with full voice acting and fully animated facial expressions, and the first to get a direct storyline sequel in Final Fantasy X-2. Also a game I should probably stop considering one of the "newer" FF titles, at this point.
Much like Final Fantasy VIII, a heavy focus was placed on the romance between the two main leads, Tidus and Yuna. However, the broader story can justifiably be called a critique of religious institutions, tackling the correlation between uncritical religious dogma and systemic prejudice.
Through the 'found family' dynamic between its characters, FFX explored themes of death, grief, purpose, and what it takes to challenge dated societal norms, and ultimately showed the beauty of finding yourself, being accepted, breaking cycles and carving out your own path in life, beyond the path you were told you should follow.

Usually when looking for an #onthisday subject to write about I first scroll down Wikipedia’s list of what happened on this date looking for any names or event which strike a chord with me.
Next I do a search for authors, looking for someone who seems appropriate for the literary-minded denizens of Mastodon.
Today? Not a single author, usually there’re about twenty to choose from, and only four writers to boot, none of any particular significance.
