    Gene Roddenberry, American screenwriter and producer, the man who brought us the future, was born on this day in 1921.

    Most famously he created Star Trek, a TV series that ran for 3 seasons before being cancelled. It was only after pressure from fans, mainly through conventions, that led to Star Trek being resurrected and going on to be one of the most influential franchises of all time, in the process earning itself the title of “the show that won't die.”

    Unusual for its time the show had a progressive political agenda reflective of the emerging counter-culture of the youth movement.

    Issues depicted in the various series include war and peace, the value of personal loyalty, authoritarianism, imperialism, class warfare, economics, racism, religion, human rights, sexism, feminism, and the role of technology.
