904 – Sack of Thessalonica: Saracen raiders under Leo of Tripoli sack Thessaloniki, the Byzantine Empire's second-largest city, after a short siege, and plunder it for a week.
1148 – The Siege of Damascus ends in a decisive crusader defeat and leads to the disintegration of the Second Crusade.
1588 – Anglo-Spanish War: Battle of Gravelines: English naval forces under the command of Lord Charles Howard and Sir Francis Drake defeat the Spanish Armada off the coast of Gravelines, France.
1907 – Sir Robert Baden-Powell sets up the Brownsea Island Scout camp in Poole Harbour on the south coast of England. The camp runs from August 1 to August 9 and is regarded as the foundation of the Scouting movement.

Luis Buñuel, Spanish actor, director, and screenwriter died on this day in 1983.
He was a filmmaker who worked in France, Mexico, and Spain and has been considered by many film critics, historians, and directors to be one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time.
Buñuel's works are known for their avant-garde surrealism and were also infused with political commentary.
Although he’s often associated with the surrealist movement of the 1920s, Buñuel's career spanned the 1920s through to the 1970s.
He collaborated with prolific surrealist painter Salvador Dalí on Un Chien Andalou (1929) and L'Age d'Or (1930).
Other films of note include: The Exterminating Angel (1962); The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and remains my favourite to this day; Diary of a Chambermaid (1964); Belle de Jour (1967); and his final film, That Obscure Object of Desire (1977).
