The Wikimedia Foundation has declined to voluntarily recognize Wiki Workers United, despite the union announcing majority support among eligible US staff.
A new community petition calls on the Board of Trustees to direct the Foundation to recognize the union and begin bargaining in good faith.
If you support workers' right to organize and believe the Foundation should uphold its own values, please consider signing and sharing:

So typical of an American NGO...
"The Wikimedia Foundation waited until the days following its largest worldwide conference to issue a statement saying it would not voluntarily recognize a union of its workers.
Last week, Wiki Workers United, which is organized through the Communication Workers Union and represents U.S. workers at the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation, requested voluntary recognition of their union. Wiki Workers United said that it had secured a βsupermajority of union-eligible workers who have signed union authorization cards.β A group of more than 1,100 Wikipedia editors have also signed a letter of support for the union.
On Monday, just days after the massive Wikimania Conference concluded in Paris, the Wikimedia Foundation announced it would not voluntarily recognize the union and said the union would have to conduct a vote as overseen by the National Labor Relations Board.
βThe Foundationβs responsibility is to ensure that they can make their own choice freely,β the foundation wrote in the statement. βSo that every eligible employee has an equal voice, we believe a secret-ballot election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board is the appropriate path forward.β
(...)
The Wikimedia Foundationβs statement and its frequently asked questions section is full of very carefully-worded language that is common among companies and organizations that have fought against unionization. For example, the FAQ includes a long section about the benefits that Wikimedia Foundation already offers its staff, and the statement suggests that there is a βwide range of views on unionizationβ among employees."#Wikipedia #Wikimedia #Unionization #LaborUnions #AntiUnions

You may have seen suggestions to halt or cancel donations to Wikimedia in light of their decision not to voluntarily recognize @wwu .
This guidance has *not* come from WWU; if you want to show solidarity with the union, they explain how here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Workers_United#Solidarity
I think it's important to follow a union's lead, and not advocate for action they haven't asked for. If they request donations be pulled, I'll pull them. If they ask not to cross a digital picket line, I won't.
But I won't go further than they do.

If you don't want #datacenters in your communities, stop using #AI wherever you can. Speak out against it to your elected officials. Uninstall #Copilot. Switch your browser to one that doesn't use it, or use #DDG and turn it off. Use #Wikipedia, not AI summaries of Wikipedia. De-google yourself where possible. Don't use AI just to prove its flawsβwe all know them.

I have previously donated to Wikimedia, and hereby state that all future donations are on hold until Wikimedia voluntarily recognizes labour unions in all countries where the foundation operates. I will also use whatever influence I have to further this opinion. This is not a threat, but a simple fact. Don't drag your feet behind you, please. Do the right thing.
Sincerely

In light of the union-busting nonsense, I cancelled my recurring donation. I won't restart it unless the WMF reverses course and does the right thing.
P.S. I am very tired of good organizations being poisoned from the top.
