I know the family of the young woman who died yesterday in a crash in Nanoose.

Vancouver Island has a railway that connects every town between Victoria, Nanaimo, Courtenay and Port Alberni. Nearly 1 million people.

The railway is disused due to political buck-passing, foot dragging and, probably, a strong truck lobby.

The car traffic is too much, too dangerous, unsustainable.

RIP for the three killed in the past 48 hours.

West Midlands #Metro is urging customers to get used to buying tickets before boarding ahead of a major change to its ticketing system.

From 13 September, conductors will be withdrawn and passengers will need a valid ticket or pass before boarding. Ticket machines are now available at every stop, while fares can also be bought through the MyMetro app, Direct Debit and Swift.

Revenue Officers will carry out ticket checks across the network. Passengers travelling without a valid ticket or pass, despite having had the opportunity to buy one, could face a £100 Penalty Fare.

Metro says the change will bring its ticketing system in line with other #UK #transport operators, speed up boarding and ensure passengers pay their share towards running and improving the network.

🇪🇺💶🇬🇷 The #European Commission has endorsed Greece’s €4.77 billion Social Climate Plan for 2026-2032, the largest national plan approved under the Social Climate Fund. It will provide €3.57 billion in #EU funding and €1.2 billion in national funds to help vulnerable households, transport users and micro-enterprises shift to cleaner energy and mobility.

The measures are expected to cut emissions by 811,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent a year by 2032. Support will include up to 62,000 home renovations, 200,000 heat pumps and solar water heating systems, 2,800 new social housing units and temporary heating payments.

More than 300,000 vulnerable #transport users will benefit from electric buses, metro trains, charging infrastructure and on-demand services. A social leasing scheme will provide affordable electric vehicles for 15,000 households. The plan also includes accessibility upgrades and €820 million for cleaner, more efficient micro-enterprises.

A new high-tech Operational Control Centre has opened at West Midlands Metro’s Wednesbury depot ahead of the planned opening of the tram extension to Dudley town centre later this year.

The facility is the new hub for #Metro operations and is integrated with the wider transport network. Its technology includes an upgraded data wall providing three times the coverage of the previous system, alongside heat mapping and video analytics to monitor passenger numbers, safety and security.

The depot has also gained a new track giving direct access to the Wednesbury-Dudley route, an expanded stabling area and improved staff facilities. The upgrades are designed to support a larger network and future extensions to Digbeth, Merry Hill and the #Birmingham Sports Quarter.

🇮🇪 The National #Transport Authority (NTA) has launched a public consultation on Clonmel’s town bus services, with submissions open until 5pm on 5 October.

Introduced in December 2023 and operated by TFI Local Link Tipperary, the network comprises three routes – CL1, CL2 and CL9 – linking residential areas, employment sites, Tipperary University Hospital and the town centre. More than 650,000 passenger journeys have been recorded since its launch.

The network is also complemented by TFI Local Link Waterford Route 356, connecting Marlfield, Clonmel Train Station and Oldbridge with wider bus and rail services to destinations including Kilkenny, Dublin and #Dublin Airport.

The NTA is seeking views on how the services are operating and potential improvements. It will review submissions and publish its findings by the end of 2026.

The latest Plugged-in Communities Fund round will support the purchase or lease of electric vehicles, including wheelchair-accessible models, along with the chargers they need.

Since the fund launched in 2021, community #transport organisations have secured 118 new zero-emission vehicles to replace diesel models.

🇮🇪🚖 Ireland’s taxi sector is continuing to grow, with rising driver numbers, record levels of wheelchair #accessibility and a sharp increase in electric vehicles, according to new National #Transport Authority (NTA) data.

Consumer research found 76% of passengers said it was easy to get a taxi on their most recent journey, while 34% described it as ‘very easy’. Safety ratings remained high, with 97% feeling safe waiting at a taxi rank and 89% when hailing a taxi on the street.

The accessible fleet reached a record 4,781 wheelchair-accessible vehicles at the end of 2025, representing 23% of all SPSVs. The number of licensed drivers rose to 27,891, the highest in a decade.

Electric SPSVs increased by 25% to 3,306, with drivers reporting average weekly running-cost savings of €95. The findings will inform the NTA’s 2026–2028 SPSV Regulation Action Plan, including consultations on regulation, advertising and fleet decarbonisation.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Zero-emission car-sharing clubs are expanding across #Wales, with the TrydaNi scheme now operating 13 clubs and serving more than 500 members. Backed by £1m in #Welsh Government funding, the scheme provides affordable access to electric cars for individuals, businesses and non-profit organisations.

New clubs have opened this year in Swansea, Penygroes and Abergavenny, with Bangor due to follow. In Aberystwyth, the club launched in December 2024 and has grown to 99 members sharing two electric vehicles.

The scheme is particularly aimed at supporting rural communities, where public #transport can be limited. Cars can be hired by the hour or day through the TrydaNi app, with prices from £2 an hour, capped at £30, plus mileage charges. Members can also help maintain vehicles as Community Champions and earn credits.

A positively dystopian feel to Westminster Underground Station in London where steel, bare concrete and dark corners are all features of a public space like no other I have come across on my travels.
These escalators lead to the deep level platforms opened in 1999 as part of the Jubilee line extension from Green Park to Stratford.
The original station was completely rebuilt in conjunction with the construction of the deep level platforms and 'Portcullis House', which sits above the station.

🇨🇿 Solaris has signed a contract with Olomouc’s public #transport operator to supply 20 electric #buses, with an option for a further 20. The order comprises 10 Urbino 12 and 10 articulated Urbino 18 electric buses, with deliveries scheduled for 2028. The vehicles will use Solaris’s modular drive architecture, which increases passenger space and simplifies servicing. They will also meet GSR2 requirements and feature driver assistance systems for blind spot monitoring, pedestrian and cyclist detection, and driver fatigue monitoring.

The buses will be the first Solaris electric vehicles in the operator’s fleet. Solaris has previously supplied 96 buses to Olomouc. If the option is exercised, the city could receive up to 40 electric buses. The #Czech Republic is a key Solaris market, with almost 1,500 vehicles delivered to customers, including more than 500 zero-emission buses and trolleybuses.

🇮🇪 #Irish Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien has published the final progress report on the National Sustainable #Mobility Policy Action Plan 2022–2025, reporting substantial progress across its 91 actions.

Around 70% of actions have been delivered, with remaining measures being carried forward under the 2026–2030 plan and other Government programmes. Key achievements include more than 185 new or enhanced public transport services linking over 240 towns and villages, 1,000km of new or upgraded walking and cycling infrastructure, and 53% of State-subsidised urban bus fleets in #Cork, #Galway, #Limerick and #Waterford moving to low- or zero-emission vehicles.

More than 500 bus shelters were installed, wheelchair-accessible vehicles increased by over 25%, and PSO passenger numbers rose by more than 35% compared with 2018. The #Government said continued investment will support a more sustainable, inclusive and accessible #transport system.

Stagecoach is backing Catch the Bus Month throughout September with a campaign challenging common misconceptions about bus #travel. The UK’s largest bus and coach operator will promote the initiative across digital and regional channels, following last year’s participation by more than 370 operators, authorities and campaign groups.

The campaign will tackle four myths: that #buses are only for people without cars, are unreliable, require cash and offer little environmental benefit. Stagecoach will highlight value, its app, mobile and contactless payments, live tracking and greener travel. It says a full double-decker can replace up to 75 cars.

Three short videos will be released on social media during September to encourage bus use and promote sustainable #transport.

🇮🇪 A new report by Ireland’s National #Transport Authority (NTA) finds that every €1 invested in active #travel #infrastructure between 2021 and 2030 is expected to generate almost €4 in societal benefits over 30 years.

The NTA and local authorities have delivered almost 1,000km of walking and cycling infrastructure between 2021 and 2025, alongside hundreds of crossings and junction upgrades and more than a dozen pedestrian and cycling bridges.

The programme is expected to generate €2.04bn in GVA, including induced effects, and support 26,640 full-time equivalent jobs over the decade, averaging more than 2,650 a year. Wider economic benefits are estimated at €7.73bn.

The report also estimates annual savings of €620 for pedestrians and €3,480 for cyclists compared with driving. The Department of Transport has committed around €290m a year for active travel investment through 2030.

The Bus Infrastructure Fund will support measures including bus priority schemes, passenger facilities and other improvements aimed at making services faster, more reliable and accessible.

The funding is intended to encourage greater bus use, reduce reliance on private cars and support a more sustainable and inclusive transport system.

Economy, Tourism and #Transport Cabinet Secretary Stephen Flynn confirmed the investment ahead of a stakeholder roundtable on proposed Better Buses legislation. The meeting will bring together operators, local authorities and passenger groups to discuss how new laws could improve services and affordability across Scotland.

CPT Scotland welcomed the funding, saying targeted infrastructure improvements could cut delays, improve journey times and give passengers greater confidence in bus services.

🚍 A new SL12 #Superloop bus route linking Gants Hill, Romford, Elm Park and Rainham will begin operating on Saturday 5 September, expanding the network into Havering for the first time. The service will provide quicker links to #Romford, the Elizabeth line, District and Central line stations, King George’s and Queen’s hospitals, and Ferry Lane Industrial Estate, which will gain a bus service for the first time.

The electric, zero-emission #buses will run roughly every 12 minutes during the day from Monday to Saturday and every 15 minutes in the evenings and on Sundays. Pay-as-you-go journeys on the SL12 will be free from 5 September until 11 September, provided passengers touch in with a valid Oyster or contactless card or device.

The launch follows more than 81 million journeys on Superloop routes since 2023. #Transport for #London is also increasing SL9 services and plans further Superloop routes and electric buses.
