  3. @rnzbot_nz It’s good to see an admission here of why Auckland City is such a sprawling car-dependent mess now.

    > A striking theme in the article was how successive governments opted to invest in Auckland's motorway infrastructure rather than commuter rail. "That went back to the 1950s and 1960s, there was a considerable push for motorway development [which was] a world-wide trend for most major cities.

    > "Auckland looked to Los Angeles for a lead -- Los Angeles was investing very heavily in motorways -- and the Auckland commuter system was deliberately run down from the 1950s through to the 1990s."

  9. #Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:

#TfL says the Superloop SL4 has proved successful since launching between Grove Park and Canary Wharf on 7 April 2025, with average weekday journeys reaching 8,300 by March 2026. Between its launch and 31 August 2026, the route recorded 3,428,413 Oyster and contactless journeys. The figure excludes paper tickets, passengers boarding without tapping and other non-validated journeys.

TfL said the SL4 had received 38 commendations, mainly praising driver courtesy, helpfulness, safety and customer service. A small number of customers have suggested extending the route to Bromley North. TfL said it had considered the proposal but found the costs significant and the scheme was not feasible. Any future proposals would involve discussions with the relevant London boroughs before public consultation.

  10. #Transport for #London Freedom of Information release:

TfL received 479 complaints between September 2025 and August 2026 about wheelchair users being unable to access the designated priority space on #buses because it was occupied by buggies, pushchairs, luggage or other obstructions.

#TfL said drivers are required by law to give wheelchair and mobility scooter users priority and ask other passengers to move, with this guidance also covered in driver instructions and passenger information. Complaints are passed to the relevant private bus operator, but TfL does not hold records of individual operator outcomes. Operators investigate cases and remind staff about accessibility. TfL also said equality, diversity and inclusion training is being delivered to all 24,700 London bus drivers over three years, covering #accessibility, ramps and wheelchair priority.

  11. 🇮🇪 The National #Transport Authority (NTA) has recognised eight organisations for promoting sustainable travel with Smarter Travel Mark awards.

Recipients include Deloitte Headquarters, University Hospital #Limerick, the Department of Culture, Communications & Sport, IDA Headquarters, Bicycle Engineering Academy, Genesys Cloud Services #Ireland, RCSI and TUS Athlone.

The awards recognise efforts to encourage walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling. Initiatives included improved cycle parking, e-bike charging points, bike libraries, carpooling campaigns and sustainable #travel policies.

Some organisations reduced car parking to expand cycling facilities, while providing accessible spaces for people with disabilities.

The NTA said the measures can reduce transport emissions, encourage healthier travel and support more sustainable communities.

  18. London’s #transport network has become more accessible, with new step-free routes opening at Surrey Quays Overground and Northolt Tube stations.

At Surrey Quays, a new entrance and ticket hall on Lower Road provide step-free access to both platforms via two lifts. The improvements also include an accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities, while a new footbridge and staircase will increase capacity and reduce congestion.

Northolt, on the Central line’s West Ruislip branch, is now the 95th Tube station with step-free access. A new lift and footbridge provide a step-free route from street level to the platform, with manual boarding ramps also available.

More than a third of Tube stations and over half of #London Overground stations are now step-free. All Elizabeth line and DLR stations and tram stops also offer step-free access, while all #TfL buses are wheelchair-accessible.

  20. People are being invited to help shape plans to redevelop Bury Interchange into a modern, accessible transport hub.

#Transport for Greater #Manchester, Bury Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority are proposing a new interchange building, a reconfigured bus station, upgraded Metrolink platforms and improved walking, wheeling and cycling routes. New public spaces and residential apartments are also planned.

The redevelopment will be delivered in two phases. The first is due to begin this autumn, with a new footbridge linking the tram platform to Union Square and Pyramid Park, alongside Metrolink platform improvements.

The second phase, expected to start in early 2028, will include the new transport hub, public spaces and potential homes. A formal consultation is planned for winter.

Residents, workers and travellers are being asked to complete a survey by 11.59pm on Sunday, 27 September. Drop-in sessions will also be held on 11, 16 and 26 September.

  21. #Volvo #Buses has launched the Volvo BZL DD Electric, a zero-tailpipe-emission double-decker designed for Hong Kong’s public #transport network. Unveiled at the ReThink #HongKong exhibition, the battery-electric bus features MCV bodywork and is the first Volvo BZL Electric double-decker for the city to use a 6x2 tri-axle configuration, supporting high passenger capacity and intensive urban operations.

The bus combines Volvo’s electric chassis technology with safety systems including active safety features and emergency braking. A heavy-duty climate control system is designed for Hong Kong’s tropical conditions, while the fully electric driveline provides quiet operation and helps improve air quality.

Operators can use overnight depot charging or fast charging of up to 250kW, offering flexibility and supporting vehicle availability. Volvo says the platform is designed to meet Hong Kong’s requirements for reliability, safety and passenger comfort.
