West Midlands #Metro has been shortlisted in five categories at this year’s Global Light Rail Awards, which will be held at #Battersea #Arts Centre in #London on 7 October.
The network is in contention for Operator of the Year and the Significant Safety Initiative award. Revenue Supervisor Matthew Brittain is nominated for Employee of the Year, while Infrastructure Permanent Way Team Leader Dale Bayliss is shortlisted for Rising Star. Metro’s Learning and Development Team is also a finalist for Team of the Year.
The nominations follow Metro’s success last year, when it won Most Improved System. Managing Director Sophie Allison said the recognition reflected the team’s commitment to providing a safe and reliable service as the network prepares to expand to destinations including Dudley.

Täällä oli (taas) puhetta äänistä ja kuulokkeista. Itse ajelin eilen metrolla, ja kun en tykkää käyttää kuulokkeita ja peittää äänimaailmaa, jouduin kuuntelemaan tosi ärsyttävää ääntä.
Siellä oli siis tyyppi, joka puhui äänipuhelua kaiuttimella, mikä ärsytti minua. Ei tarpeeksi, että olisin tehnyt mitään, edes siirtynyt.
Sitten samaan vaunuun tuli useampi porukka, jotka juttelivat keskenään, ja tajusin, etteivät he häiritse minua lainkaan yhtä paljon.

A £6.50 Great North Run Day Rover digital ticket has launched on the Pop App for this year’s event on Sunday 13 September. Available on iOS and Android, it offers unlimited travel on #Metro, #buses and the Shields Ferry, plus Northern services between Sunderland and Blaydon.
Nexus said the ticket is designed to save time and avoid queues at Metro machines for runners and spectators making multi-modal journeys. The price is subsidised through the Mayor’s Fares by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness.
A paper Day Rover is also available from Metro ticket machines for £6.50. Nexus will not issue its usual Great North Run wristbands this year, although wristbands will still be included in run packs for those who ordered them.

🇨🇦🚇 Montreal’s public #transport authority, the STM, has launched celebrations marking the Metro’s 60th anniversary on 14 October. Under the theme “60 years of #Metro moments”, the programme invites Montrealers to share memories that will form part of a collective artwork unveiled on the anniversary.
Events will take place across the city with partners including the Alouettes, CF Montréal, cultural venues and Radio-Canada. A documentary, Pierre-Yves prend le métro, will air on 17 September, while a special edition of Votre retour will broadcast live from a Metro station on 14 October.
From 23 September to 19 October, anniversary clothing and accessories designed by La Charbonne will also be sold, with proceeds supporting Centraide du Grand Montréal and Réchaud-bus. The celebrations also highlight the Metro’s contribution to Montreal’s development, while recognising the major maintenance challenges facing its ageing infrastructure.

West Midlands #Metro passengers can enjoy a free live #piano performance from CBSO Music Director Kazuki Yamada this August Bank Holiday weekend. Yamada will perform aboard a tram on Saturday 29 August, departing Brindleyplace Tram Stop at 11.29am. The performance follows his popular 2024 appearance and forms part of CBSO in the City, a weekend of free musical events across Birmingham from 27 to 31 August. I migrated the FOSDEM Companion Android app dependency injection from Dagger Hilt to Metro. Build times are faster as expected and the APK file is also 7KB smaller which is a nice bonus.
I was afraid I would miss Hilt-specific magical code generation features but I was able to create simple abstractions that provide a very close experience.
This experiment gave me enough material for a talk or a long blog post so expect to see more about it later. -
