  1. The other day I was explaining to someone that I'm reviewing high school geometry because I'm both overqualified and underqualified to tutor in it.

I'm going to tutor in it this fall for a student that I've been tutoring now in math for over a year.

I'm overqualified because I can tutor geometry concepts that are beyond high school geometry.

I'm underqualified because up until this afternoon I was having trouble distinguishing a rhombus from a diplodocus.

I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the gist. I'm plugging the holes in my knowledge.

  2. Ever tried turning a cube inside out? In 1929, inventor Paul Schatz figured out that if you remove the corners of a cube, the middle turns into a hinged ring that flips inside out. #science #physics #discovery #geometry

  6. New blog post: “There are two kinds of theorems”.

Mathematics alternates between model-building and model-using. After the model building comes a series of theorems showing that the model works and makes sense. And then come the real theorems, the new ones about the thing that was being modeled.

This is perhaps the most important mathematical methodology, and it is never explained to the students, who are left wondering why Euclid proves a lot of theorems about things that are obvious (“vertical angles are equal”) or why we show that the Peano axioms can prove the commutativity of addition.

  8. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🥚✏️ Engraved #ostrich eggshells dating to over 60,000 years ago, from sites including #Diepkloof and #Apollo11, were systematically analyzed.

Over 80% of 112 fragments showed consistent spatial rules, with repeated right angles and parallel lines. The researchers argue this rule-based organization points to planned abstract thought and early symbolic systems.

  10. A perimeter is the length of a closed boundary that encompasses, surrounds, or outlines either a two-dimensional shape or a one-dimensional line. The perimeter of a circle or an ellipse is called its circumference.

  17. If you’re at MathFest, be sure to check out the art exhibit. I have a couple of pieces there, including a painting of the geometry of longitudes and a set of bracelets I made with cellular automata. You can see from my first photograph that I’ve done this painting more than once because I wanted to update it for the conference. In doing the second version, I screwed up one of the, illustrations in the center column and so I had to do it twice to get it right. #mathart #geometry
