  1. One #accessibility issue I mention frequently is web designers, presumably for aesthetic reasons, making low-contrast colour choices. It also frequently goes along with selecting a #font so small that only people with excellent vision (and no #presbyopia) can read them, even if the #contrast were higher.

Here's an example. I'm not pointing out the software in question, even though you could identify it easily, because this isn't a dunk on that project, specifically.

This is the reference #documentation for an API, a small excerpt from the navigation links that run down a column on the left side of the page. The #text is darkish #grey on a lighter grey background. The contrast is terrible, particularly ignoring the highlighted entry because that's bolded as the current selection.

If you have #cataracts or any other #vision problem, you're going to have trouble with this. But it gets worse.

That text is 7 pixels high. On my monitors, it's 3 mm high. Ridiculous. Note that if you have fine motor-control problems or use alternative input devices, these are also extremely difficult to click on.

Here's the kicker: for this site, I have Firefox set to #scale the text up to 133%. That 7 pixels / 3 mm is *after* enlarging it.

#Web folks, please try to remember that not everyone is a twenty-something able-bodied person with zero accessibility issues.

    ドロンを導入するのは良いが、電子戦対策も又重要です。
It is good to introduce drones, but electronic warfare measures are also important.

  12. 1864 Meets 2026: Old Iron, New Glass

Look up and notice that 160 years of history are stacked vertically in the same sightline in London. At the bottom of the frame is the ornate ironwork crest of the London, Chatham and Dover Railway, dated 1864, sitting on its stone parapet like it’s been there forever (because it basically has). And rising directly behind it, filling the rest of the frame, is One Blackfriars. That’s a 50-storey residential tower clad in curved glass that Londoners have nicknamed “the Vase” because of its shape.

  13. A quotation from Mark Twain

You see, happiness ain’t a thing in itself — it’s only a contrast with something that ain’t pleasant. That’s all it is. There ain’t a thing you can mention that is happiness in its own self — it’s only so by contrast with the other thing. And so, as soon as the novelty is over and the force of the contrast dulled, it ain’t happiness any longer, and you have to get something fresh.

Mark Twain (1835-1910) American writer [pseud. of Samuel Clemens]
Story (1868?), “Extract from Captain Stormfield’s Visit to Heaven,” Part 1, Harper’s Monthly Magazine, Vol. 116, No. 691 (1907-12)

  14. Challenges In Comparing National Forest Statistics - Canada As A Case Study

H/T Michael Wulder |Senior Research Scientist at Natural Resources Canada
“Canada is a forest nation. Its forests are spatially extensive, ecologically diverse, and of global importance. While national level forest statistics are used for international reporting and comparison, they often fail to reflect the distinctive structure and stewardship context of Canada’s forest estate, which includes millions of hectares of remote, unmanaged forests alongside actively managed zones governed by provincial and territorial stewardship frameworks...”

  15. Fish Platter, Wayne Thiebaud, 1964-80

This has some of that color contrast ringing also, but is more palatable (🥸). Maybe there's room for your eyes to rest.

I've decided that I'm done trying to enjoy fish... Sushi is pretty good, in soup it's pretty good, but I think in most cases I'd be happier eating something else. I'm 50 years old and I don't need to like everything. haha
