Got firewood?
I can report on good authority that the trunk of a Douglas Fir tree that is about 32" diameter (just the wood, not the bark) will produce about 3 cords of firewood. I am nearing the end of the project. When it is all in there the row in front will be taller than the row in back.

The last of Alan Birch is finally split and stacked.
This was a tough birch. I thought I lost my mojo but some ancient oak and fresh maple logs did split just fine so it was just that this birch was really tough. Probably because it didn't grow in a forest but on its own on a windy hill. Sadly it rotted inside as forked trunks often do.
As you can see I resorted to the chainsaw for some of the knottier pieces, the rest with wedge and axe.

Jenga sidequest. Got all the old alder split and stacked, just a few huge chunks of knotty old birch left.

Hooked up the log splitter today to deal with the rounds the tree crew left after taking down a dead fir tree. Note in the pic that the splitter is on a dolly I made. It is super easy to roll it out of the garage and line it up with the lift arms of the 3-point hitch.
By contrast, when an implement is simply parked on the ground it can be a pita to position the tractor to do the hookup.
*Much* easier to position the implement on the dolly than position the tractor.

Got exercise?
Going to be a bit of work to process these rounds into firewood. Fortunately we have a log splitter. This was a large Douglas Fir tree that decided to die. It could have hit the house if I waited for a storm to take it down so I had a tree crew take it down yesterday.
New roof is on the tractor barn. The old roof (laying on the ground) will get folded up and given away on Craigs List.

Huh, this is clever. It uses the existing bucket curl cylinder, super easy build, no messing with hydraulics at all.
💡 I wonder if I can design one for the quick-fitting I've got and how much force that would get me.

Split, ya bastard! 2026 edition.
I wonder if the little Scheppach/Güde electrohydraulic splitter could handle these or just bend itself in half?

Battling sub-10-degree weather to cut dense Australian hardwood. Some red gums are near impossible to split, but this piece is dry enough to burn. #AustralianHardwood #Firewood #DIY

Been thumbing around some concrete beams and then played some jenga.
The firewood store got expanded a little and some of the beams had sunk into the soft soil under the weight of the firewood stacked on them and needed rebedding.
The new thumb was extremely useful doing this and I managed to do it without either knocking over the stacked firewood or the roof.
Then stacked the split pile onto there so it can finish drying.

I had an old broken maul handle I found somewhere. I shaved it down with a knife and rehung an old head I had laying around.
While shaving it down, I uncovered old insect galleries in a bit of sapwood(handle was suboptmal). I thought it was pretty interesting. I've never seen them in a finished product like that.

@sundogplanets That is very generous of you, if you had offered two months ago I might have been interested.
But the grass in our garden has finally started to turn green, the overwintering onions are sprouting in the vegetable patch and we really need to get our wet fire wood stacked for next winter.

The last of the old man's firewood. Our own is dry and ready meanwhile.
I dunno why he built this barn so far out in the meadow. Its on a side slope and difficult to access in winter. Snow blew over the hilltop and piled up more than a meter deep in front of it. He used it to park his tractor.
The barn is large and in decent shape though. Well ventilated too, as you can see. Perhaps best for storing lumber. There's already a stack of long planks in there, along with some cutoffs from the house roof and a woodworking bench that may be restoreable.

Mr. Oleo-Mac got some exercise too.

After two weekends of feasting in a row, a bit of exercise is very welcome.
