Sad stuff two-fer for #TextureTuesday and #TreeTuesday / #ThickTrunkTuesday with this detail of an old, dead Black Oak (Quercus kelloggii).
The majestic trunk has lost all of its bark and the entire tree most likely fell victim to the Gold-Spotted Oak Borer (GSOB), a major invasive pest without natural enemies here. It has killed tens of thousands of oak trees in Southern California at this point. 😢 Laguna Mountains; August 2022.

Here's a photo I took on the golf course last Friday. I was happily not playing and staying in the shade because it was about 36°C hot and I was melting. 🥵
Anyway, two of my favourite trees there are in this photo. They're thick!

Found these old growth redwoods with some thick burn scars. Our old trees hold some important stories we could learn from. Probably preaching to the choir here, but worth saying we need our old growth trees to protect our environment from fires, keeping ecosystems diverse and extra cool during these burning hot days. And when we might feel helpless in that challenge its not hopeless, just being around these giant trees creates an inner calm you can actually feel. Growing in the language of peace. Trees are like a warm friend, always there when you need them.

I just finished mowing the side yard. This area was my son’s responsibility when he was in middle and high school; he kept an eye on it and mowed it when needed.
It’s also where we used to play catch with the baseball. I used to stand about where the lawnmower is in the photo and throw him pop-ups OVER the sycamore tree. That’s been a few years ago.
