  5. I'm currently reworking some older photos whose editing I'm no longer very happy with. Sometimes it helps me to look at photos more often to see how I could have brought out the mood in the image better. I took this one in the Italian Maritime Alps last year.

  6. New old gear – Carl Zeiss Jena DDR Sonnar 135mm f/3.5 M42

Yesterday I posted an old lens I had lying around. I said it’s new but the only thing new is that I’m using it. Well, here’s another one. This is new in the sense that it’s new to me… Other than that I ordered it from a Polish guy and it has to be at least 45 years old. Only bought it because I felt I was missing a lens that could get closer and flatten the background well. Is this one perfect? No. But it works fine. Here it is, the Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f/3.5 M42. Proudly made in the now defunct East Germany, it’s built like a Panzer, features pristine glass and the mechanics work like a Swiss watch.

It’s practically new considering its age, and a steal for a telephoto… Not bulky at all and it has the same M42 mount as the Helios, so I can use the same adapter. With the crop factor it’s a full frame equivalent of 200mm. It’s only f3.5 but it works pretty well, as a macro it has some decent bokeh, for general use I have no complaints except I can see the dust on it if I don’t clean it. Ok, there are three small downsides / annoyances:
    1. Manual focus only. Not a problem on a slow shooting day but it’s hard to turn, so if you want some nice photos you better take your time. I had no luck photographing crows with this.
    2. No stabilization. I have to be quite still and shoot pretty fast because my Fuji doesn’t have IBIS either.
    3. The stupid pull-out lens hood. The silliest thing to come from German engineering along with the Opel Kadett E and the 2019 Grand Prix. The lens hood has no way to be removed or fixed in place so it just slides out randomly.

Anyway, here’s some decent photos I got with this. SOOC jpegs resized to 50% from the 15MB originals. Yeah, nothing too impressive or artsy here, I’ll probably have to do a photo-walk just with this lens.

  17. New(ish) old gear – Helios-44

A few years ago I was messing around with film photography. I had my grandpa’s old cameras and a Canon I bought at a flea market. A friend gave me a very sturdy Pentax camera he wasn’t using and after shooting a film roll I forgot the camera in a box with my other gear. Well, lately I’m getting back into it all – mostly digital though. And since I’ve been browsing “photography-Tube” I found out about the hype around Helios-44, with its vintage look and circular bokeh. Well, lo and behold the Pentax had a 58mm Helios-44M-2 on. Bought an adapter to use it with my new baby boy, the Fujifilm X-T30 III and… it’s fun, the results are very vintagey – but half of that is the in-camera recipe as well.

I know this isn’t the best Helios out there and it’s half-plastic unlike the earlier ones… And sure, it’s a bit dusty, it’s manual focus only, the crop factor makes the 58mm an 87mm equivalent but… I like it. Not an everyday lens and I have no idea what the results are with a sharp recipe; but it works well if I’m on a slow photo-walk taking atmospheric photos. Here are a few of my favourite results. All SOOC jpegs – compressed from the 15MB originals the Fujifilm spits out.

  22. #Mondog
Kengo went back to the vet for a post-op checkup and a laser treatment. They found the scar looks good and are happy to see him partially bearing weight on the operated leg. He has to have a total of 6 laser treatments then staple removal. But...there are only three staples left in...thanks to his self-removal. But they aren't concerned about it at all. So...he's recovering fast, I think?

    Have a good week, everyone.
