I saw two cabbage white butterflies flying yesterday, which is odd, as this species should be overwintering as a pupa at the moment.
I looked on #iNaturalist for all the observations of adult cabbage white butterflies from June and July in the Canterbury region of NZ.
We launched the NZ community of iNaturalist in 2012 and there are only 11 Canterbury observations of cabbage whites in June or July. One is from 2024, two are from 2025, and 8 are from 2026. It feels like a trend.
Also, notable amongst those observations is a cabbage white seen this month by legendary NZ lepidopterist Brian Patrick. Brian notes "my latest in season - my first Winter records!"
