  7. Hare's-foot #clover, #Trifolium #arvense (#Fabaceae), is native to Europe/Western Asia and inhabits dry, sandy, nitrate-poor #habitats. #Seeds are enclosed in feathery calyxes that protect against desiccation, serve as #flightorgans, but also adhere to animals. It hosts #symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria (paraphyletic "#Rhizobia"), which S. Schulz et al. (2013) analyzed in more detail via functional marker gene nifH.

  18. I met a bee today during my walk! Working towards peas on earth.

Gotta appreciate these little dudes. Blue collar comrades, working by the sweat of their fuzzy little brows.

(stop reading here, thar be horror ahead)

US agriculture is undergoing a rough reality check right now as all our unappreciated foreign labor (human beings who deserve better) gets disappeared.

We'll have a worse reality check when we run out of bees.

  19. Eastern redbud (Cercis canadensis) doing its strange cauliflory thing. I planted three in my front yard and for the next several weeks people will stop in awe and ask what species it is. When possible, I try to have small potted seedlings on hand to give to them. #trees #swarthmore #redbud #fabaceae #botany #cercis #cauliflory

  20. Before moving to Hawai'i, my only experience with sensitive plant (mimosa pudica) was at a display at the Chicago botanical gardens where you could touch it. As you can imagine, it made a big impression on me as a kid 😊

Here in the tropical wet climate of East Hawai'i Island, it grows in many disturbed areas, like my driveway! It's fun until you experience the sharp thorniness 😖

    But here's a pro-tip: goats love it! 🐐

Here's a video I took of mimosa pudica in action: youtube.com/shorts/kmch3KVc-v8

The little pink puffballs are its flowers. If you notice a similarity to other fabaceae, that's because it too is in fabaceae. I'd love it, if only it wasn't so sharp! 😅

    ✧ peanut ✧

A peanut, also known as a groundnut, is the fruit of Arachis hypogaea, a plant in the family Fabaceae. The peanut is classed as a grain legume rather than as a botanical nut, although in culinary and colloquial use it is generally treated as one. Uses of peanuts include consumption as a snack and in various dishes, peanut butter, and – due to its high oil content – as a vegetable oil. Pean...

  22. #TIL that #chickpea leaves and young stems are excuding a liquid that looks like and feels like water, but tastes very sour (acidity like lemon or vinegar, but seemingly without any distinct flavour).

Zoom in on the rather poor photo and see the glistening “dew drops”.

I didn't read the entire, rather long, article about chickpea in Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook, but the sourness is not mentioned in the section about leaves:

One more leafy picture and there's a clear precedent for #ShowUsYourLeavesMonday. 😉

  23. This here is a Khabarovsk bean.

Nearly all of my bean growing attempts this year were razed by weather, chipmunks, slugs, and spongy-moths, but the one big ol' bean I picked up from a seed exchange and planted on a lark is flourishing.

    Thankful, in any case. 😄

  24. My Dr. Martin lima beans are finally starting to set fruit. The variety was developed in 1920 by a Philadelphia dentist who had a side hustle as a plant breeder. He apparently sold each bean for a dollar (~$15 in today's currency). Seeds are about the size of a U.S. quarter and are super tender. Vines are vigorous climbers so you'll need a trellis. A big one. #LimaBean #DocMartins #garden #delco #gardening #legume #allotment #seeds #PlantBreeding #fabaceae

  29. Currently, the wind-dispersed fruits of Diplotropis purpurea
(Rich.) Amshoff (#Fabaceae) are flying around everywhere around the Instituto Federal do Pará in Bragança-PA -- the #tree occurs in the little patch of #forest on the Institute's Campus. We need some #seedlings for a restoration experiment, so I'm peeling the seeds from the delicate "wings". #BragançaPA #Amazonas #botany #IFPA #UFPA #Leguminosae
