  1. Network Rail and Southern #Railway have confirmed that the railway between Haywards Heath and Lewes will reopen to passengers on Tuesday 1 September, following the 13 August derailment.

Engineers are carrying out a complex recovery and repair operation, including removing damaged track and ballast, reinstating the embankment and track, and restoring signalling systems. Three derailed carriages and five others are being removed using two large cranes.

The site’s location near the River Ouse has made the work particularly challenging. Temporary foundations and platforms have been built to support specialist machinery, while teams work around the clock.

Before reopening, engineers will complete extensive testing and safety inspections. Network Rail and Southern have thanked passengers and local communities for their patience during the disruption.

  2. #Photovoltaics are still running after a year under Swiss #trains
100m #photovoltaic installation on a #railway line open to traffic, inaugurated April 24, 2025 in #Switzerland. It's fair to say it went well; 48 #solapanels wedged between tracks have generated more than 19MWh
According to the company's CEO, Joseph Scuderi, more than 11,000 trains have passed over the #solar power plant without incident. There has been no impact on railway operations or solar generation.

  4. #London Northwestern #Railway will host a seaside-themed summer fun day at #Birmingham New Street station on Friday 21 August, from 10am to 3pm.

Families can enjoy free ice cream, carnival games, character appearances, steel pan performances, face painting, balloon making and candy floss. Activities are available to visitors with a valid train ticket.

Visitors can also have their photo taken with Ozzy, the station’s famous bull sculpture, which was created for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and unveiled at New Street in 2023.

GBR West Midlands integrated managing director Denise Wetton said the event would bring seaside entertainment to the city and give families free activities and treats during the final weeks of the summer holidays.

  5. Railway bridge, built 1916, railing almost fully overgrown.

Two crossbars on rusted posts, remnants of the bridge structure.

Climbing plants and shrubs have wrapped so tightly around the metal that the structure is barely recognizable as a standalone form in places.

No isolating, no dominating, vegetation has taken over here.

Over a hundred years of railway history, now vanished into green.

  7. #London Charing Cross and Waterloo East have reopened following a £20m engineering project delivered during a 22-day closure.

South Eastern #Railway replaced nearly two kilometres of track, switches, and crossings south of Hungerford Bridge, while carrying out structural repairs and repainting the bridge's steelwork. Engineers also rebuilt parts of all six platforms at Charing Cross, removing 540 tonnes of concrete and installing new surfaces. At Waterloo East, footbridge steelwork was repainted and window panels were upgraded to improve lighting and ventilation.

The integrated team of Network Rail, Southeastern, and Southern Renewals Enterprise scheduled the work during the summer holiday period to minimise disruption while passenger numbers were reduced. Officials noted that completing the upgrades in one single block avoided the need for 60 weekend closures, delivering long-term reliability improvements sooner and at lower overall cost.

  8. View along the rail, ending several hundred meters ahead at today's track terminus.

Sleepers, ballast, bolt heads – the raw structure of the trackbed. Rolling mark on the rail web dated 1943.

Historical cadastral maps (1910) show the line once continued further, today's buffer stop marks a later cutback, not the original route.
