  1. I’m running a bit late tonight! And no, today it’s definitely not ‘#WindowFriday’ again, but this photo would work just as well for ‘#MonochromeMonday’ and ‘#PhotoMonday’, wouldn’t it?

  2. South Western #Railway (SWR) and Network Rail Wessex have launched a data-led crackdown on ‘short-faring’, where passengers deliberately buy tickets for only part of their journey. SWR estimates up to 95% of barcode tickets between Vauxhall and #London Waterloo are misused, putting around £1 million of revenue at risk. A trial launched at Waterloo in June 2026 identified 153 offences in its first four weeks, up from seven in the same period last year, and protected £45,000 in revenue. SWR says its wider revenue protection strategy, using operational and ticketing data to target fraud, has cut fare evasion by 67% since 2017, with a further 11% reduction over the past year. The railway estimates fare evasion costs it almost £40 million a year. SWR’s revenue protection work also features in the new series of Fare Dodgers: At War with the Law, airing on 5.

  3. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿📈🚉 #ScotRail has recorded its busiest week since returning to public ownership, with more than 2.1 million passenger journeys made between 26 July and 1 August.

The rise reflects growing demand for rail travel to events, as well as business, shopping and leisure trips. The record week follows June figures showing more than seven million journeys, up six per cent on the same month in 2025.

Additional services have supported major events including the #Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026, TRNSMT, concerts at Hampden and Murrayfield, and Glasgow’s Summer Sessions. Extra trains are also planned for the #Edinburgh Festivals.

ScotRail said the figures showed the efforts of its teams and would support its aim of delivering a reliable, safe and greener #railway for #Scotland.

  5. All the European #train critical-admirers I read here might be interested in the account I just heard from someone who spent the last week being broiled in France and Italy.

There is apparently a place on the Italian Swiss border ... Tirano? ... with two different #railway stations across the road from each other, one railway going to Switzerland, one coming up from Italy.

But no-one told them that, and the booking system just said go to platform 3 for your connection to St Moritz.

  6. Great Western #Railway (GWR) has dedicated Intercity Express Train 800012 to mark the first anniversary of The Greatest Gathering, one of the flagship events of the Railway 200 celebrations. Held at Alstom's Litchurch Lane Works in Derby in August 2025, the three-day festival attracted more than 40,000 visitors and featured over 140 railway vehicles spanning 200 years of rail history, while raising more than £100,000 for charity. The new livery was unveiled at #London Paddington alongside GWR's heritage-liveried Class 57 locomotive Pendennis Castle and Avanti West Coast's Railway 200 Pendolino. GWR said the dedication recognises the festival's success in celebrating the railway's heritage, innovation and future, while organisers said it left a lasting legacy and inspired the next generation to consider careers in the industry.

  7. A remotely operated drone is being used at #London #Waterloo to help reduce delays by tackling trespass, inspecting infrastructure and improving incident response. Operated by SkyBound from Southampton, the drone provides live video and thermal imaging to South Western #Railway and Network Rail Wessex, allowing teams and emergency services to respond more quickly while reducing the need to close lines. Trespass and related fatalities accounted for almost 14% of cancellations and more than 200,000 minutes of delays between April 2025 and June 2026, costing taxpayers millions. The Waterloo drone is the first in a planned network covering other busy locations, including Clapham Junction, New Malden and Walton-on-Thames. The initiative forms part of plans to improve reliability ahead of the creation of Great #British #Railways.

  8. 🇮🇪🚉 Iarnród Éireann has lodged a planning application for a new railway station at Dunkettle, the second of two early station projects under the #Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme following #Blackpool. The station, beside the Dunkettle Interchange, will serve Cork-Cobh and Cork-Midleton services, include a 300-space park-and-ride and be fully accessible. It is designed to improve access to rail, reduce road congestion and support future service increases, with trains expected to run every five minutes in each direction once the wider programme is complete. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, subject to planning approval and funding. The wider programme includes electrification, six more stations and a new depot, with a #Railway Order application due later this year. Phase 1 works, including Platform 6 at #Kent Station, signalling upgrades and twin-tracking to Midleton, are already under way.

  10. Who likes following big bridges? Currently a massive new #railway #bridge is being installed in #Hamburg, and the local news @NDR has a live blog: ndr.de/nachrichten/hamburg/liv

It is very slowly and carefully, being transported between people's buildings, into position, on hundreds of little wheels.
