  1. I've been living in Prague for quite some time now, and I have to say that the city still feels and looks almost the same as when I first arrived.

Don't get me wrong — Prague is still one of the prettiest cities Europe has to offer. But it also feels like the city isn't really improving.

So many buildings are old and desperately need renovation. Podolí, the swimming pool where I exercise, is a good example. It's outdated, it smells, and the whole place feels like it has been left behind. And it doesn't exactly look like major improvements are coming anytime soon.

Prague still has its charm, but prices keep going up while the quality seems to be going down.

I've been comparing Prague with other bigger cities lately, and what surprises me is that cities in Germany, Denmark and Sweden don't always seem that much more expensive anymore. Yet the quality of housing, food and groceries often feels noticeably better.

That's the part I find sad.

A beautiful city shouldn't have to choose between being affordable and actually investing in its quality of life.

Well, now that is a fascinating question. Huh.

Okay, so, anyone out there in a former Warsaw Pact nation got an inside line on whether this happened? Recognising that most of the people I know on "that side of the line" as it were are not themselves wargamers, I wonder if you know any compatriots who are, and would know about this bit of cultural history?
