De boeddhanatuur van Adolf Hitler
Vandaag herpubliceren we in het BD een tekst van Jules Prast die hij in september 2013 schreef onder de naam Taigu. Dit jaar wordt herdacht dat het tachtig jaar geleden is dat de Tweede Wereldoorlog en de verschrikkingen van het nazibewind eindigden.De ware aard is van oorsprong rein, maar niemand heeft een ware en oprechte aard.
Had Hitler boeddhanatuur? Het is weer eens wat anders dan de vraag van de klassieke mu-koan, of een hond boeddhanatuur heeft.
Taitetsu Unno, auteur van het boek River of Fire, River of Water, geeft een verrassend antwoord op deze vraag. Hij voert een zenmeester op die zei dat zelfs Adolf Hitler boeddhanatuur had, zij het dat deze zich nooit had gemanifesteerd. Maar volgens Unno zou Shinran (1173-1263), de Japanse monnik die het Shinboeddhisme stichtte, het hiermee niet eens zijn geweest.
Shinran is in de geschiedenis van het boeddhisme een interessante figuur omdat hij zo’n scherp oog had voor de beperkingen van mensen en van de condition humaine. Volgens Unno was Shinran ervan overtuigd dat hijzelf hoegenaamd geen boeddhanatuur had. “De ware aard is van oorsprong rein, maar niemand heeft een ware en oprechte aard,” schreef Shinran. Wat een verschil met zijn tijdgenoot Dogen die in zijn beroemde verhandeling Bussho (opgenomen in het verzamelwerk Shobogenzo) verklaart dat alle levende wezens ‘door en door’ boeddhanatuur zíjn.
Moeras
Ik zie Shinran als een ‘reality check’ voor wie in het post-Maslow tijdperk al te optimistisch meent dat je met mindfulness en meditatie jezelf aan je haren kunt optrekken uit het moeras. Mindfulness en meditatie zijn een stap op weg naar het betreden van de stroom, maar in de visie van Shinran is het vrijwel onmogelijk dat mensen zich ermee op eigen kracht kunnen losmaken van de gehechtheden en de illusies die ze binden aan deze wereld.
Shinran ontmaskert het zekerheidsgevoel van de valse heiligheid: in dit leven geen bevrijding. Het snijdt de vluchtroute af voor mindfulness en meditatie als spiritueel escapisme. Het opent de ramen voor een besef van ‘s levens felheid, van de grilligheid waaraan wij, mensen, in ons bestaan blootstaan. Tegenover de eigen kracht waarmee mensen hun verlossing aan zichzelf proberen te voltrekken, stelt Shinran de ‘anderkracht’ van vertrouwen in de compassie van Amida Boeddha.
Wollen deken
Zijn wij onder de zware druk die individualisering en industrialisering mentaal op ons leggen, niet te ver doorgeschoten in onze hunkering naar heil? ‘Geluk is een gewoonte,’ kopte Trouw boven een interview met Thich Nhat Hanh toen deze vorig jaar Nederland bezocht. Je kunt de Vietnamese zenleraar en vredesactivist niet een diep inzicht in de Dharma ontzeggen, maar hij voedt in een onbedoeld effect mogelijk wel ons verlangen om het heil naar ons toe te halen, als een warme, wollen deken waaronder we alles smoren wat zou kunnen dissoneren. Shinran staat echter te allen tijde klaar om die deken weg te rukken.
Het Shinboeddhisme van Shinran is een aftakking van het eeuwenoude Reine Land-boeddhisme. Edel Maex schreef daar in de zomer van 2012 een verhelderend artikel over in het Boeddhistisch Dagblad. Het Reine Land-boeddhisme verschilt in een aantal belangrijke opzichten van andere boeddhistische scholen, maar deelt in het gemeenschappelijke doel van ons te doen ontwaken in de realisatie van ons oorspronkelijk gelaat.
