  1. It’s never a good sign to see the train driver walk past the window when the train stops unexpectedly on a viaduct.

He must have been satisfied with whatever he saw as we’re underway again.

  3. Let us imagine, for a moment, a #CarbonFree #SteamEngine

    A #Locomotive , for pulling a #train.

We would be doing this for #fun wouldn't we, so #efficiency is not a major concern, and even #effectiveness is not the main constraint.

First off and really easy is what the #LondonUnderground, the#Tube, did in early days - make the boiler and firebox rather hot, use that to generate steam to propel the thing undergound, heat it up again when you get back into fresh air.

No need to use #Coal now.

  8. @philip I think it'll be weeks or months, more likely months, before it's fixed.

It will remain fixed for a period of days or weeks.

Then it will break down again.

Some context for people seeing this outside Melbourne: Box Hill is the main commercial "hub" of Melbourne's eastern suburbs. It's not yet a second downtown, but there's some suggestions it could eventually become one.

There's a growing number of tall office buildings and apartment towers. I took some photos last time I was in Melbourne: https://pixelfed.social/p/ajsadauskas/911568051347668761

At the centre is a multimodal transport Interchange called Box Hill Central.

Underneath is a train station on two lines running from the centre of Melbourne to the outer eastern suburbs. On the ground floor is a shopping centre, market, and large food court. Nearby is a tram line and an under-construction metro.

And on the rooftop is a major bus station that serves multiple bus lines across Melbourne's eastern suburbs. I think about 12 or 14 in total?

There's whole suburbs where the sole connection to the rest of Melbourne's public transport network is a bus that runs to Box Hill Central.

Anyone transferring from those busses to a connecting train or tram, or travelling to Box Hill, depends on this one escalator.

  18. @EUCommission Until train travel is subsidised in the same manner that air travel is, the pure economy behind inter-european train travel will prevent many from doing the right thing, even if they wanted to.

    🚂 🛫 🌍

For many people, the added time alone is a show stopper, but when you add VAT, energy taxes, and other strange costs on top of that, train travel isn't as easy to choose as it should be.

  19. Well that got the adrenaline pumping. To start my day I had to give a short speech to my publisher's assembled sales team, promoting my upcoming book Train Europe so they would be more knowledgeable and enthused, and go out into the wide world determined to sell it to every possible outlet.

Went well I think. One of my main points was that we spend too much time banging on about the "golden age of rail travel", when in fact trains are very much part of Europe's present and future.
