  1. This final shot of former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (#GNRi) 4-4-0 #steam #train No. 171 Slieve Gullion working “The Midlander” along the #RoyalCanal in #Leixlip for the #RPSI took AGES to edit — loved the composition, but the light was TERRIBLE. Eventually got to this #BlackAndWhite version.

  2. Former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (#GNRi) 4-4-0 steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion peaking around the sharp turn between the two #Leixlip stations with “The Midlander” special #steam #train for the #RPSI. Because there’s no turntable in Maynooth anymore, the loco has to run tender-first.

  3. An #IrishRail Commuter train accelerating away from #Leixlip Confey station along the banks of the #RoyalCanal on a beautiful summer afternoon.

  4. Former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (#GNRi) 4-4-0 #steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion pulling “The Midlander” #RPSI special #train around the turn between Matt Goff Bridge and the 13th lock along the #RoyalCanal in #Leixlip. #blackAndWhite

  5. A glimpse of former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNRi) 4-4-0 #steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion working the last leg of the last of the #RPSI “Midlander” special #trains through the trees along the #RoyalCanal between #Maynooth and #Leixlip.

  6. A glimpse of a green #IrishRail Commuter train between all the greenery lining the #RoyalCanal as it passes the cutting between Carton House in #Maynooth, and the 13th lock in #Leixlip.

  7. Old meets new — I got lucky, and managed to snap a meeting of former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNRi) 4-4-0 #steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion meeting an #IrishRail Commuter train at Matt Goff Bridge along the #RoyalCanal in #Leixlip. The loco was pulling an # RPSI (Railway Preservation Society of Ireland) “Midlander” special #train towards Maynooth.

  8. Former Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNRi) 4-4-0 #steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion coasting towards a red signal as it pulls an RPSI “Midlander” special #train towards Blakestown level crossing in #Leixlip en route to Maynooth along the banks of the #RoyalCanal.

  9. An #IrishRail Commuter train climbing the bank up to Blakestown level crossing and the #RoyalCanal 13th lock near #Leixlip on a blustery May afternoon.

  10. Former #GNRi 4-4-0 #steamLoco No. 171 Slieve Gullion with it’s clean white steam contrasting against the December clouds as she works hard accelerating an #RPSI Santa Special away from the sharp turn in the line and #RoyalCanal at #Leixlip Louisa Bridge.

  11. Former #GNRi 4-4-0 #steamLoco No. 171 Slieve Gullion pulling an #RPSI Santa Special around the sharp turn in the line and the #RoyalCanal at #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station. #blackAndWhite #momochrome

  12. Winter gold! This lone Pot Marigold was brightening up the #RoyalCanal towpath at the 13th lock just opposite Intel in #Leixlip.

  13. I chose to this sharp turn in the railway line and #RoyalCanal at #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station because it’s only usable when the weather is overcast or you’ll have the sun against you, and the forecast was overcast. When #RPSI #steamLoco No.171 arrived, so did the sun, so I chose a silhouette!

  14. A dull morning along the undeveloped stretch of the #RoyalCanal at Confey in #Leixlip as an #IrishRail Commuter service approaches the first of the two Leixlip stations en route to Maynooth.

  15. Having run around its train in Maynooth, former #GNRi 4-4-0 steam loco No. 171 Slieve Gullion steams around the sharp bend in the line and the #RoyalCanal at Intel in #Leixlip as it pulls an #RPSI Santa Special back to Dublin.

  16. A closer look at former #GNRi 4-4-0 #steamLoco No. 171 Slieve Gullion as it steams past Intel in #Leixlip with an #RPSI Santa Special.

  17. It turns out just one of the twelve 2025 #RPSI Santa Specials would be blessed with some winter sun, but former #GNRi 4-4-0 #steamLoco No. 171 Slieve Gullion sure looked great rounding the corner at Intel in #Leixlip yesterday morning!

  18. Yesterday morning was blustery but beautiful, and the commuters slowing down for #Leixlip Louisa Bridge stations could enjoy lovely views of the #RoyalCanal as they made their way towards Dublin. #IrishRail #train

  19. Our last Repair Café of 2025 at Leixlip Library was a busy one.

Across the morning, we logged 39 items: lamps, tape players, baby monitor, paper shredder, outdoor socket, clothes, shoes, backpacks, Christmas decorations, an air fryer and even a bear with an electronic problem.

Big thanks as well to Leixlip Library and the Kildare County Council Climate Action Office for backing the event.

  20. An autumn evening on the #RoyalCanal along the sharp turn between the #Leixlip Louisa Bridge and Confey stations.

  21. An #IrishRail Commuter service passing the supposedly haunted 13th lock on the #RoyalCanal having just climbed the bank at Collinstown. This lock and level crossing are on a tiny back road directly opposite the big Intel plant in #Leixlip.

  22. An #IrishRail Commuter service approaching #Leixlip along the banks of a mirror-smooth #RoyalCanal with some dramatic early autumn clouds above.

  23. One last railway photo from my lovely walk along the re-developed #RoyalCanal towpath around #Leixlip last weekend — an #IrishRail Commuter #trian rounding the corner at the bottom of the bank between Blakestown crossing and the new motorway link bridge at Intel Ireland. #BlackAndWhite

  24. An #IrishRail Intercity #train entering the tight turn on the approach to #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station as the railway and canal turn 90° to enter the Ryewater viaduct directly after the station. The newly redeveloped towpath is unusually free of joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists here!

  25. An #IrishRail InterCity #train accelerating onto the Ryewatwr Viaduct in #Leixlip having rounded the tight turn on the approach. #BlackAndWhite

  26. An #IrishRail InterCity rounds the tight bend on the approach to the Ryewater Viaduct in #Leixlip.

  27. The old #RoyalCanal toll house at the entrance to the Ryewater Vidaduct in #Leixlip had been beautifully painted.

  28. An #IrishRail Commuter service rounding the tight corner on the approach to #Leixlip Louisa Bridge station. This is a particularly pretty section of the #RoyalCanal because it seems to attract more wild flowers than the average stretch does.

  29. An #IrishRail Commuter #train races towards Maynooth along the #RoyalCanal having climbed the bank up to Blakestown level crossing and the 13th lock at the entrance to the Intel Ireland plant in #Leixlip. The recently redeveloped towpath was heaven for a summer walk 🙂
