Seems like Discord has started or maybe accelerated its enshittification process. I just got the second popup ad I've seen, and that's two in a week.
They did a terrible job on the ads. There's no natural way to integrate an ad, so… they just have it appear. And I'm sure they're reporting high engagement to advertisers - because there's no clear, easy way to get rid of it, just a tiny hamburger menu. If you want high engagement, make the ads difficult to dismiss and easy to unintentionally click.

CW: rant about MuseScore and dark patterns
Really don't know why I keep getting emails from MuseScore that keeps bugging me to subscribe to PRO+ (which costs like €30 per month! I ain't buying that)
I thought I opted out of receiving promotional emails??? Well, hold on, got a bit of explaining to do.
When you sign up for a MuseScore account, there is a checkbox that you can toggle if you want to subscribe to promotional emails or not, except here's the thing, it looks like it's turned off by default except it says "I don't want to receive promotional emails", you have to enable this checkbox to OPT-OUT of promotional emails, it's so fucking stupid and this is a dark pattern.
I got around to check my MuseScore account and yes, I did opt-out of promotional emails, however I notice that there are other things such as product news and marketing emails that I need to turn off.
I turned those off, maybe MuseScore will stop spamming my email. If it keeps spamming my email then I'll try to unsubscribe via the link and if it still keeps doing that... well I don't know, maybe I'll just stop using this service. 🤷
It's unbelievable just how many dark patterns I came across on MuseScore, like holy cow. Is MuseScore this bad???
I'm going to debate if I should still use this website because whoever runs this website seems rather scummy. :/

Are they just assuming that academics don't keep track of their emails and respond better when they're instilled with a bad conscience?

I'm disappointed to see Shopify use a - self-serving - dark pattern in their hosted checkout page.
This "Save my information for a faster checkout" used to be a simple, clear checkbox.
Apparently, being transparent didn't convert well enough, so Shopify removed the checkbox so the whole section looks like informational text.
"Number go up": buyers who have never heard of a "Shop account," let alone wanted one, are now unintentionally creating one. Shopify deceived its customers' customers in the name of short-term growth.

Much food for thought at the tradeoffs between usability, security, and more. A consumer protection authority (CCPA) in India fined Zepto INR 700,000 a few months ago for using dark patterns. The amount is chicken feed compared with how much they may have ripped consumers off via those patterns.
