#WordWeavers 18/10: Share a line from your WIP where a character is lying. Do they get away with it?

It’s not so much that he’s lying, it’s more a case of the character being almost incomprehensible.

So much so that he feels the need to text Drummond back so he can understand what he was trying to say.

Rorulent, from Latin rōrulentus, full of dew, dewy, from oblique stem of rōs, rōris, dew, +‎ -ulentus, full of, abounding in (hence -ule and -ent).

Meaning: Full of dew; Covered with bloom which may be rubbed off.

The picture shows a close-up photograph of a single dahlia blossom in full bloom, featuring eight pointed petals radiating outwards in vivid shades of magenta and bubblegum pink.

Clear water droplets rest gently on the textured petal surfaces, glinting beneath direct, warm sunlight.

Redolent too, perhaps…

#PennedPossibilities 1159: If you told your characters about our Halloween, what would they think?

My characters already know about Halloween.

To some of them it’s a celebration in the form of Samhain, one of the festivals making up The Wheel of the Year.

Others treat it with suspicion as it’s the one day of the year when supernatural creatures can go abroad unnoticed.

#WritersCoffeeClub 18/10: Talk about a time you had a revelation.

It was shortly after I’d self-published How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List when I remembered an earlier novel I’d written, which lay languishing in a metaphorical draw on my laptop, had thematic similarities.

I dug it out, reworked it so it had a similar word count, and lo and behold I had a companion piece entitled The Secret Life of Books.

Currently looking to get it published, hopefully in a traditional manner. If it doesn't get picked up it'll be back to self-publishing.

A happy birthday to Charlie Stross who was born on this day in 1964.

Charles David George Stross is a British writer of science fiction and fantasy who specialises in hard science fiction and space opera.

His novel Accelerando won the 2006 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, was a finalist for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel and was on the final ballot for the Hugo Award in the best novel category. Glasshouse won the 2007 Prometheus Award and was on the final ballot for the Hugo Award in the best novel category; his novella Missile Gap won the 2007 Locus Award for best novella, and he was awarded the Edward E. Smith Memorial Award or Skylark at Boskone in 2008.

Stross is the creator of two of my favourite series of recent years, The Merchant Princes series and the Laundry Files.

Salem's Lot, an American vampire novel by Stephen King, was published on this day in 1975.
It was his second published novel.
The story involves a writer named Ben Mears who returns to the town of Jerusalem's Lot (or 'Salem's Lot for short) in Maine, where he lived from the age of five through nine, only to discover that the residents are becoming vampires.

The town was revisited in the short stories "Jerusalem's Lot" and "One for the Road", both from King's story collection Night Shift (1978).

The novel was nominated for the World Fantasy Award in 1976 and the Locus Award for the All-Time Best Fantasy Novel in 1987.

During two interviews in the 1980s, King said that, of all his books, 'Salem's Lot was his favourite.

The TV mini-series of the same name directed by Tobe Hooper and released in 1979 was a standout piece of water cooler TV, reinventing the vampire story for the modern era.

One of the scariest scenes was when a young boy with an unnaturally pallid face hovers in the mist outside his big brother’s window.
The lurid smile is chilling, but then the scratching on the glass … O My God!

I live in a rural location and earlier, when I was out for my daily walk, I passed by a house which had the skull of a steer set up in the garden as a decoration.

This set me musing about deer.

Deer are harmless creatures and not threatening in any way, yet when you see a deer skull it come over as being disquietingly creepy.

Making me wonder why the sight of a deer skull creeps me out, I’ve done a bit of research and apparently deer skulls are associated with various superstitions.

In some cultures, it is believed that deer skulls possess protective and healing properties and they are also considered to be symbols of good luck, abundance, and spiritual connection with nature.
Perhaps not so creepy after all…
