  1. The little bush primary school I went to in Bobin, in the Manning Valley, NSW, is at risk of closure. That would be a huge bummer for the community there (which I'm still connected to).

The school goes through waves of high and low enrolments every decade or so, and currently has few students. If it closes, it will be nearly impossible to reopen it.

  6. Dumped wildlife and
depressed and suicidal vets: excessive workloads and out-of-hours work, unsatisfactory remuneration, client abuse, and unclear regulations.

A "report found a lack of consistency with local governments and unclear legislation had led to a public perception of vets as "the default drop-off location" for injured wildlife and other found animals, despite the responsibility lying primarily with local and state governments."

"Six of the 32 recommendations related directly to challenges faced specifically by regional vets, including an "unreasonable level of responsibility" for the care of lost and unowned animals, such as injured wildlife...Wildlife is one of those things that we're all deeply passionate about, that we want to help our native wildlife … but it does come at a strain in the cost to the clinic that is, at this point, not covered at all."

"Vets say daily abuse and a lack of understanding from clients are one of the biggest factors causing them harm." >>

  7. Sprawl, cars and climate
Transport set to be Australia’s top-emitting sector by 2030, private cars (SUVs) still dominate.

“If you’re in suburbia or regional Australia and you’re trying to make a journey, often you’ll find public transport is just not a viable option and you have no choice but to drive."

"Experts have pointed towards an Australian love for US-style SUVs as a contributing factor to the rising death toll on roads nationwide, which has climbed every year since the pandemic, with NSW the highest of any state." >>

  9. #NSW police are appealing for information after dozens of #beehives were stolen from a property in the state’s Northern Tablelands.

The beehives – 80 boxes in total, worth about $150,000 – were taken some time between 31 March & 6 May from a rural property about 15km west of #Bonshaw village, 100km from #GlenInnes.

The boxes are described as cream in colour with blue baseboards, blue and white lids and red, clear boards. They were full of #bee colonies. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

  10. This is hitting too close to home to feel complacent about the lack of #SocialHousing

“An Indigenous woman, living in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, gave birth to twins in a tent. One of those babies died. In a tent. Where their parents were living, because the waiting list for social housing in their area is up to seven years. The Sydney Morning Herald’s Amber Schultz has reported nearly 700 people are on the social housing waitlist in Wagga Wagga, a city with fewer than 70,000 residents.” (Source: thenewdaily.com.au/news/politi )

One in a Hundred without a decent roof over their heads. Think about that as if one of them was you.

If the federal Govt is inept at solving the #HousingCrisis problem in the #Riverina electorate, then let’s elect a representative who will push an inept #NSW #Labor govt to step into the breach. And while we’re at it, let’s make sure the local #Councillors we elect to the #WaggaWaggaCouncil also have #Housing front and centre on their mind.

We can be better than this folks. We don’t have to put up with the crap we’re given by those love-sick on power at any cost. Think about our community, the whole of our community when you vote next time in #Federal or #State #elections. This is not about you or me, it’s about all of us in the Riverina. Safe housing, free healthcare, and social services delivery must be foremost on our minds. The other things that are making our lives miserable we can overcome once we’re all safely housed and in better shape to do somthing about them. Because of course we must, all of us, do something about them too.

"Seagrasses are often overlooked, but they are among the most important coastal habitats on Earth."

"Our findings highlight an important idea: the impacts of climate change on seagrasses can’t be understood by looking at the plants alone. The microbial communities living in the sediment can also influence how these plants respond to warming. "

"This has important implications for conservation and restoration. Around the world, seagrass meadows are declining due to coastal development, pollution and climate change. "

  28. How much do Australian governments care about culture and history?

Well, Australia's oldest colonial European cemetery is currently being maintained by volunteers:

"With a pair of gardening gloves in hand and a massive grin on her face, historian Judith Dunn gestures to an old burial vault surrounded by tall native grasses.
    ...
"Ms Dunn is among 10 taphophiles, otherwise known as 'tombstone tourists' because of their interest in cemeteries.

They recently spent their weekend tending to Australia's oldest surviving European cemetery.

"Nestled between apartment blocks and opposite an escape room, St John's Cemetery in Parramatta certainly has unique geography.

"With a meadow of long grass that obscures the plaques on headstones, passers-by could be forgiven for mistaking the cemetery for a vacant block.
    ...
"The origin of St John's Cemetery provides a snapshot of the gruelling reality of Australian colonial life.

"Convicts built the graveyard in 1790, after being moved west to Parramatta to grow crops needed to feed the fledgling colony.

"Harsh working conditions and the dangers of frontier life meant a burial ground was a necessity, not a luxury."
    ...
"Seventeen members of the First Fleet were later buried at the cemetery, where the first Jewish headstone in Australia can also be found.

"At least seven Sydney suburbs were named after people interred at St John's Cemetery, including Pymble, Harris Park, Wentworthville and Homebush."

  29. Hi there rich people of Sydney's wealthy Eastern Suburbs and Lower North Shore.

As your fashionable selves are no doubt aware, recently some white hipsters from a trendsetting publication discovered Burwood and deemed it worthy of hipster gentrification. I mean, decided it's the "coolest neighbourhood in Australia".

Now, we know in your mental maps that Sydney ends somewhere around Newtown. And that one time you did go out Olympic Park or the Enmore Theatre, you felt uncomfortable. And you've never been further out west than that.

You're not a racist, but a friend of a friend once caught the wrong train to Hornsby and told you it's all poor people in a foreign land out there. I mean, the wrong sort of people. I mean...

Well anyway, the Museum of Contemporary Art has arranged a special bus tour for you.

    To Burwood.

As a warm up, we've bought a selection of the Asian drummers and those video games, which people out that way seem to like, to the MCA.

If you're not comfortable going any further, you can leave it there.

That way, you can get a taste of Burwood at its Chinatown district from the comfortable surroundings of the MCA.

But if you're really feeling adventurous, you can board a special double decker bus for a special tasting tour we've arranged.

This study tour will be a one-of-a-kind cultural experience for you!

And for those snickering folks who don't live in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney or the Lower North Shore, yes this is actually a thing.

    See below:

"Celebrate Burwood – recently named Time Out’s #1 Coolest Neighbourhood in Australia, and one of the country’s most culturally diverse communities.

"The night begins at the MCA, where Live at the MCA brings the energy, sound and stories of Burwood to Tallawoladah. Expect roving drumming performances and a vibrant line-up of Chinese, Korean and Japanese musicians bringing together musical traditions and contemporary expression. Experience Burwood’s thriving gaming culture through a curated selection of interactive games.

"At 6.30pm, Next Stop Burwood full-experience ticket holders will board a vintage double-decker bus for a one-of-a-kind cultural journey through Burwood."

  31. Platypuses need threatened species recognition in NSW, researcher says

"The species was only "hanging on, not thriving" in NSW and the Murray-Darling Basin."

"There's no state or national monitoring framework for platypuses...Dr Bino said platypuses had survived Australia's natural cycles for millions of years, but were now struggling to adapt to human-driven changes. We've been disrupting the natural flow regime and fragmenting and isolating platypus populations."

  32. What do you think might be the culprit? At least four birds killed on the edge of a golf course at the edge of forested river verge in the past month, all within 30 metres of each other. Nearest houses are 150 metres away. I wouldn't think a cat would be so predictable with its kills, unless near where it lived. They're not small birds that have been killed either, including a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and a Wood Duck. I don't think they're from golf ball strikes either.
