  1. The weather where I live has been brutal (again) these last few weeks and the heat has made my usual drawing tablet basically unusable during that time. However, while I was searching for something else, I found my old wacom companion tablet from uni. I'd stopped using it mostly because these days it had a 10 minute battery, just turning it on made it sound like a jet engine and it sputtered just trying to open it's start menu let alone run any art programs, but I never realised that if you plugged it into a windows PC it would work just like a small cintiq, which bypasses all the performance issues it was having.
So I did this sketch of Ruby from my wheelchair basketball comic to test it out properly! The Winter Olympics and Paralympics had me itching to draw her again.

  2. The spotted-tail quoll (Dasyurus maculatus) is a carnivorous marsupial that can be found on the eastern Australian mainland, as well as on the island of Tasmania. It hunts a variety of critters, including small mammals, reptiles, and birds, and takes down prey with a powerful bite. Its hisses and screams have been likened to the sounds of a circular saw!

  4. Spotted-tailed quoll out of habitat

"Residents have reported sightings of a spotted-tailed quoll at the Coffs Harbour Marina."
There are concerns for the animal's welfare due to a hostile environment of roads, sprawl, dogs and fishing gear.

Der Beutelmarder wird auch Quoll genannt, was kein schöner Name ist. Der erstgenannte Name zeigt außerdem, weshalb er Beutelmarder heißt: Er liebt Beutel aller Art, sammelt und bewacht sie eifrig

  7. It's been a while since I shared anything from my comics, so I did this between commissions!
Ruby is one of the 6 main characters in my wheelchair basketball comic I'm working on (and honestly, she's one of my favourites)! She's an Eastern Quoll who comes from a family of athletic high-achievers and Olympians, and is under a lot of pressure to live up to their expectations in a world that doesn't see her as equal to her other athlete relatives.
Ruby is a high-pointer, meaning that, on paper at least, her disability has less impact on her ability to play - though not necessarily on her day-to-day life. This is an especially important distinction to make for Ruby in particular, as her disability (EDS) does impact her daily life and does impact how she plays, but not in a way that neatly fits into wheelchair basketball's points-based classification system, which causes some...issues for her later in the series.

  8. “Can I pet that dog?” In this case, we don’t recommend it. The spotted-tail quoll is actually an Australian marsupial predator. It uses a powerful bite to dispatch prey including birds and small mammals. Its hisses and screams have been likened to the sounds of a circular saw!

  9. I just checked the camera at the quoll spot & am pleased to see we have a new one - this youngster. By comparing their unique spot patterns I've identified at least 21 individual spotted-tailed quolls in the three years we've lived here.

  10. What is a chuditch, and how can you help protect this special species?

    > The chuditch has been almost completely wiped out during the past 200 years, but the Australian Geographic Society is partnering with @AustralianWildlifeCons...

  11. It's spotted-tailed quoll breeding season. At this time of the year, the females get chonky necks and develop a pouch.

They only live for about three years, so it's good to see from recent trailcam pics that there are more babies on the way.

  12. They say the people you spend the most time with rub off on you – and this saying extends to the animal kingdom.

Falling populations of Tasmanian devils (Sarcophilus harrisii) in areas where spotted quolls (Dasyurus maculatus) also reside means quolls are travelling shorter distances to scavenge and breed – decreasing genetic exchange between individuals.

So, what are the genetic implications? And are quolls evolving due to these environmental changes? ausgeo.co/quollgenes
