Gas from the Beetaloo Basin will only pour fuel on the climate change fire
"The NT will become unliveable within decades...""In terms of gas reserves, the Beetaloo is bigger than Western Australia’s North West Shelf project, the nation’s largest fossil fuel development which accounts for more than 40% of Australia’s oil and gas production."
"The Beetaloo Basin is covered with pastoral leases and different forms of Aboriginal tenure. Some of this tenure is the NT’s Aboriginal Land Rights Act land, which provides fairly strong rights for Traditional Owners. But most of the Aboriginal title in the basin is federal native title tenure that does not allow Traditional Owners to veto resource extraction."
"Climate forecasts suggest many parts of the NT will become unliveable within decades, due to the lethal heat caused by climate change. The NT News headline, “NT will be cooking with Beetaloo gas”, sums this dilemma perfectly, if accidentally. The irony of this headline won’t be lost on anyone who is familiar with the science."
"No amount of jobs or money can compensate for this devastating future. By turning on the Beetaloo tap, we risk watching the climate crisis worsen before our very eyes." >>

Making hostile spaces The dispersal of non consumers
* At an intersection of numerous car parks, retail industry and an amusement industrial complex in Coffs Harbour there is a small green space with benches and birds. People and birds rest there and have their lunch.
Some time ago the amusement & drink giant piped ongoing unpleasant, loud music over the small green island and the abundant car parks.
The intention of the outdoor speakers distributing noise pollution is/was to engage in then 'dispersal' of ‘loitering' non customers.
This loud and repetitive ‘music’ is also known as "aggressive" or "defensive" architecture. This design in mostly public spaces is intended as a form of 'organised abandonment' (Ruth Wilson Gilmore) of the poor and the unhoused.
Often the exclusionary design acoustic ('steady-state spam’) is combined with other anti homeless devices (anti-homeless spikes furniture) which function to keep members of the public out of public spaces.
With increasing inequality, that is non spending consumers, the system is increasingly employing hostile practices. Privately owned public spaces such as walkways, plazas, arcades and small parks have to ensure the safety of their customers and staff. Non-consumers have no place in this scheme.
* "Woolworths has installed outdoor speakers at its Darwin city store to play the supermarket's 'Fresh Food People' jingle on repeat in a bid to deter loitering.” >>

* "The NSW Police Force is currently running an Australian-first trial in Moree (an area with a high Indigenous population) using rooftop drones to "fight crime" in the area, controlled by people hundreds of kilometres away at Bankstown Airport." >>

Mowing down children and the racist feeding frenzy that followed.
Alabama in the 1930s?"* Two children, who were riding a motorised pushbike and left with serious injuries, were allegedly pursued and mowed down by 56-year-old Gol Gol man Andrew Brien.."
"Mr Brien allegedly pursued the children through the pedestrian-only mall in the belief they were involved in vandalism at his partner's real estate business. However, the court heard the children were "blameless" of any offending on the night."
"The amount and volume of racist and violent comments surged after the incident, with hundreds of social media posts laying blame on the boys and praising the driver.""The act alone was shocking, but what followed on social media revealed a distressing and damaging ugliness...What we've seen lately in terms of social media is that anger is coming out in really primal responses, in ideas and thoughts and beliefs which do not have a place in a civilised society."
"It is not OK to hurt children. It is never OK to hurt children. It's not OK to call this man a hero."
"No-one should see violence against their children or community being celebrated or joked about...I don't want to see comments that I think would be better placed in 1930s Alabama". >>

From Gold Rush to Green Rush
The environmental consequences of cannabis cultivation* "Professor Kaitlin Reed (Yurok/Hupa/Oneida) argues that the state's booming cannabis industry can be situated squarely within other extractive settler colonial enterprises such as gold mining and overfishing."
“The real gold is not gold, after all, but the land itself”
Kaitlin P. Reed, "Settler Cannabis: From Gold Rush to Green Rush in Indigenous Northern California" (U Washington Press, 2023) >>
https://read.dukeupress.edu/agricultural-history/article-abstract/100/1/140/407075/Settler-Cannabis-From-Gold-Rush-to-Green-Rush-in?redirectedFrom=fulltext* Reed "connects California cannabis production to the violence and dispossession of Indigenous land and people."
"Young countercultural back-to-the-land settlers flocked to northwestern California beginning in the 1960s, and by the 1970s, unregulated cannabis production proliferated on Indigenous lands."
