“More than half of all road deaths are people who aren't even in a car – they are walking, cycling or riding a motorcycle. When roads are designed as if only car drivers matter, these people are left dangerously exposed,” said Dr Etienne Krug Director of the Department of Health Determinants, Promotion and Prevention at WHO. “We know what works – strong laws and enforcement, safe infrastructure and vehicles with particular attention to lowering speed and addressing impaired driving. This declaration means we must all go further and faster.”

Autobahnspaziergang

Motorised bikes
First they put e-bikes on the market, then it is a long wait for regulation of illegal high-powered 'motorbikes' on shared pathways and beaches. There has been "...alleged antisocial and criminal behaviour involving a group of youths riding e-bikes in the Moonee and North Sapphire Beach areas."

From Car and Driver:
"A new study conducted by the New York Times shows that the increase in vehicle hood height seen over the last two and a half decades, mainly due to the rise in popularity of large SUVs and trucks, has resulted in several thousand deaths that otherwise may not have happened. Specifically, the study shows that while automakers and regulators have focused on occupant safety, they have turned a blind eye to pedestrian safety, which has fallen since around 2009."

Indeed, going to a mass event like the soccer matches currently somewhere in the US is best done by foot or public transport.
Look at the ridiculous parking they made around the stadium. I assume it can't be used now with all those orange pedestrians around.

Sawtell #beautification
When the oversized 'Toorak tractors' park on the #Sawtell main drag, they grab all the space on the footpath. No plants or plastic infrastructure is tolerated, separating SUVs and #pedestrians. All is squashed and butchered. Now finally it seems some official agent removed the last remnants of #plants and planter spaces so that the 'all terrain #vehicles can conquer the #footpath entirely where the (polluted) 'al fresco' takes place.

Henry Street, Slowed Down
A quarter of a second is all it takes to turn a busy footpath into a river of ghosts. I planted myself on Henry Street, dropped the shutter speed right down, and let the lunchtime crowd smear themselves across the frame while the New Yorker models behind them stayed pin-sharp and perfectly bored. It's the opposite of the shot I put up a few days ago, where I caught a Deliveroo cyclist mid-pedal. -

Hey, Toronto - despite calling yourself 'A City Within a Park', note the first photo is a lot closer to what the city actually is rather than the second. And both city and its inhabitants suffer for it.

Taller hoods are a major contributor to crashes that kill pedestrians.
"More evidence is piling up that extra-tall vehicle hoods, increasingly common on American trucks and SUVs, are more dangerous to pedestrians."
"...Data from the 1990s found that a pedestrian hit by a light truck was two to three times more likely to be killed, with another study finding that light trucks were twice as likely to injure a pedestrian than a car, especially at low speed.” >>

@shifter Thx, good video, good questions! Just stumbling over your words "that means restricting the free flow of automobiles".
Where is that "free flow of automobiles"? Nowhere.
They always have to stop or slow down every 200 meters for other motorists, anyway.
Just when they have the impression, that they have to stop or slow down for cyclists or pedestrians, they immediately start to rage about being unfairly discriminated.
Perhaps "adjusting priorites" would fit better than "restricting the free flow"?
