The creeping extinction of koalas
A vigil will "mourn the death of a koala found injured during clear-fell operations in Pine Creek State Forest in July. Forestry Corporation confirmed the animal was found on 21 July within an active harvesting area."
"...We are still losing koalas to logging in the very compartments that should form the bridge.”
"Mr Elzer, a long-time Coffs Coast resident, said he has witnessed the extinction of all northern beaches koalas, which, decades ago, formed a healthy large colony. He fears that the remaining few in the heart of the city around the Coffs Creek bushland and east of the Sawtell link road will suffer the same fate in years to come."
“Without connectivity to the lush hinterland connecting Bongil Bongil National Park to Bindarri National Park, this small re-emerging colony will also become extinct,” he said." >>

Traumatised koalas in clear felled forests on the mid-north coast
The Carbon Credit Grift Destroying Koala Habitat
"The NSW Labor Government took office promising to create a vast koala sanctuary on the state’s mid-north coast – the Great Koala National Park. Despite the threat of koala extinction in the state, more than a year later the Great Koala National Park is yet to be established.
Last year, NSW Premier Chris Minns' remarkable admission disclosed a further motive for the go-slow: the government is reluctant to create the new national park or end logging and land clearing that is destroying koala habitat until it secures another way to make money from the trees. In essence, it wants to exploit the forests for carbon credits."

Saving koalas from extinction on the Mid North Coast of NSW
"The Bellingen Environment Centre (BEC) has called on the Government to suspend all logging within the proposed Great Koala National Park as consultation for the Koala Park begins in Coffs Harbour."
“If logging is allowed to continue within the boundaries of the proposed Great Koala National Park, koalas and a large number of other critically threatened and endangered animals will suffer.”
“The industrial logging that we are seeing at Pine Creek is an environmental and economic disaster and not only a major threat to koalas, but it’s also a serious waste of taxpayers’ dollars and undermines the $190 million NSW Government Koala Strategy.”
“Labor needs to listen to health and environmental scientists, not a single industry, and place a moratorium on logging immediately."

Displaced koala found adjacent to a clearfell logging operation in the proposed Great Koala National Park
"The National Parks Association NSW (NPA) has obtained video of a likely displaced koala barely 40m from the edge of a clearfelled logging coupe in Pine Creek State Forest within the proposed Great Koala National Park (GKNP).
Koala Hubs contain critical multi generational koala populations and their habitat. Logging of Koala Hubs within the proposed GKNP was suspended by the NSW Government last September, but unfortunately Koala Hubs in plantations were not included in the decision and continue to be logged."

Forestry Corp has started logging compartment 14 of the Pine Creek State Forest within the boundaries of the Great Koala National Park (GKNP).
"The compartment is bordered on three sides by Bongil Bongil National Park. It contains a ‘koala hub’ – the only interim government policy protection afforded koala in the GKNP."
"Fully 50-60% of every tree felled is ‘waste’ for Forestry’s purposes. Non target species such as casuarina (the primary food source of endangered glossy black cockatoo) is swept away as trash. All this is bulldozed into 3-meter high long windrows and burned. What are the CO2 losses from this practice one wonders."

Some small successes for the Great Koala National Park
Independent koala surveys of the forest and protect native forest remnants in Tuckers Nob State Forest needed.
"Dr Cadman said Tuckers Nob State Forest is inside the proposed GKNP, and has koalas and rainforest remnants containing Ringwood trees (aniseed myrtle) which only grow in the Nambucca, Kalang and Bellinger river valleys."
"The Friends of Tuckers Knob "sought legal advice, and, after interactions between their legal team and the Minister, operations have been suspended pending an investigation of the forest’s “unique and special biodiversity values” under the Act."
