  1. "Streeton decried the logging of old-growth forests:

‘With our settlement we have upset the natural order of things, and the result is fire, wind and desolation … [We] have no appreciation of the beauty and use of trees, no sense of our responsibility … in preserving the forests for future generations.’ "

  3. Creating diversified revenue streams out of 'The koala park' -
    carbon credits and logging?
    Nature as cash cow

"A long-promised New South Wales great koala national park is set to go ahead after the Albanese government greenlit the state to receive hundreds of millions of dollars for protecting native forests previously earmarked for logging."

"...Polluting companies are allowed to buy an unlimited number of credits – also known as offsets – to count as their own cuts while continuing to pollute. Scientists have warned limiting the climate crisis requires rapid direct cuts in emissions and that carbon offsets should be used sparingly."

"NSW Greens MP Sue Higginson said the logging industry was unprofitable and the government should end it regardless of carbon credit revenue. “Reducing our forests in NSW to cash cows and offsets for climate polluters … sends a signal across the country that governments can disregard the intrinsic value of nature in favour of the latest get-out-of-jail-free card for climate polluters." >>

  5. The native forest logging industry in Australia

Victoria claims to have stopped native logging. So why is it importing Tasmanian forests?

"No matter how much public money, suggestions for change and reform or recommendations for value-adding, the industry simply cannot survive without massive subsidies and handouts from government. It has been like this for decades."

"The taxpayer should not be expected to keep propping an industry that loses so much money. It is time to terminate contracts, cease handouts, and fully close the native forest logging industry in Australia. Instead, we should transition to a well managed plantation-only forestry sector – as New Zealand did in 2002." >>

    Precautionary principle - ban paraquat

"Paraquat and the related herbicide diquat are fast-acting weedkillers that farming groups say are essential for controlling resistant weeds."

  20. Study finds Tasmanian native forest logging increases potential for more severe bushfires

"Logging worsens bushfires because regrowth eucalyptus trees are highly flammable in comparison to mature trees, which act as "green fire breaks...A fire expert says mature forests can "act as a buffer" to slow bushfires, whereas regrowth eucalypts are more flammable."

"The study has found around a fifth of Tasmanian tall wet forest is regrowth under 40 years old, largely a result of intensive logging and recent fires."

When residents express their concerns about the prolonged toxic pollution to the relevant state institutions, the response is along the lines of 'close up your house, stay indoors or move away and shut up.'

  40. Toxic smoke pollution maximising harm

The government's Forestry Corporation of NSW is still polluting the Bellingen, Gleniffer and Repton area with toxic smoke. Wet piles and the green timber piles are smouldering. After a cocktail of pesticides was applied, the wet piles with green timber were set alight and are left smouldering for days, maximising the toxic smoke pollution over a wide area.

These negative externalities occur when the consumption or production of a commodity (cellulose) causes a harmful effect to a third party.

It appears that the Forestry Corporation and EPA evade or pass responsibility and the many concerned residents ring 000 and overburden the small Gleniffer Bushfire Brigade now...
