Rural road deaths increasing
"A new report has identified an increasing number of fatal crashes on rural and regional roads".
"An analysis by the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) found 906 people died on roads outside the capital cities in 2025, a 10.5 per cent increase on 2024. The ARSF understands this to be the highest number of regional fatalities since 2020."
"Deaths on rural, regional and remote roads made up nearly 70 per cent of the national road toll in 2025, despite only about 25 per cent of the population living in those locations." >>

The risks of normalising cycling in a car-dependent infrastructure
Where is the safe cycling infrastructure?
"Many Australians are interested in cycling but feel intimidated by riding in traffic. Others are uncertain about route planning, road rules or cycling infrastructure. In highly car-dependent places, cycling can feel unfamiliar, risky or at odds with car-related norms. Simply providing technology and infrastructure does not overcome this.""Australia’s investment in cycling infrastructure remains essential. We need safer bike lanes, secure parking and better integration with public transport."

Wow - apparently *none* of the #Gardaí are #pursuit trained to same standards as officers in GB / NI (or other European countries).
How even can a country operate like that?
Folk will be constantly at the mercy of reckless drivers or outright criminals / sociopaths. I have also seen quite a few Irish tooters over the years pointing this out
Sorting this out won't be an easy task - #roads in GB were quite lawless until things got cleaned up starting around late 1990s,. #CarCulture is strong, stubborn and resilient, and older #motorists still resent limitations of their "freedom" and many vote for parties such as Reform / Restore out of spite..

Motorised bikes
First they put e-bikes on the market, then it is a long wait for regulation of illegal high-powered 'motorbikes' on shared pathways and beaches. There has been "...alleged antisocial and criminal behaviour involving a group of youths riding e-bikes in the Moonee and North Sapphire Beach areas."
"The claims echo concerns being raised in communities right across the state. For many locals, the issue isn’t just legality. It’s safety on shared pathways residents once felt confident using every day." >>

Bellingen's 'vanishing' biodiversity
The 'upgrade' of Gleniffer Road and and Roses Rd. encourages motorists to drive as fast and careless as possible. Road signage is knocked down as no road is ever wide enough.
Biodiversity has to live in this fragmented space with speeding combustion boxes. All year around there are dead beings on the road that drivers kill and mush up.
Here are the latest killings in just a few days:
A large beautiful python on the middle of Roses Rd cut in half with one half missing
A freshwater turtle smeared along the road.
A stunning bright Green Tree Snake killed and tied into a knot.
Many birds along the roadside, crippled and enduring a slow death
No one counts the carnage.

I'd like to nominate for the #Darwin award the 200 or so #motorists who tonight drove past (nearly over) a #motorcyclist who was lying on the ground after a serious #roadaccident on #TulseHill #London. Clearly no fucks given about human life, they just beeped and drove round over the pavement, with debris everywhere, cos the guy dared delay their journey. I had heard the horrible noise of crushed metal but thought no one had been injured from the way #cars were driving thereafter. I was wrong.

The koala procreation season and car crashes
Speeding combustion engines are one of the major threats to unarmoured koalas. No road is ever wide enough for vehicles in the Bellingen/Gleniffer area. Road signage is regularly knocked down and speeding is the 24/7 norm.
Koalas like to meet up between June and December. This is the time when the marsupials are forced to negotiate a fragmented habitat of roads, settlements and degraded logging sites.
Switch on your 'car brain' and consider others.

Fom Queensland to NSW, the same story:
“Koala habitats have got smaller and smaller over the years, and the roads through them have got busier...The animals that draw visitors to the Queensland capital are being run down at an alarming rate. Just three days apart in November, separate pairs of mother and joey koalas were hit by vehicles and left to suffer on the side of the road. They were just hit and left. People don’t stop..This year we've hit over 100 within a 6km radius."

Human cost of unsafe driving
"'Selfish' drivers and risk-taking behaviours fuelling road deaths. A recent Australian Road Safety Foundation survey has found 39 per cent of drivers admit to breaking the law on country roads. The head of the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) says its latest research suggests New South Wales drivers are deliberately engaging in unsafe behaviour behind the wheel. It found 39 per cent of drivers surveyed admitted to breaking the law on regional roads as they believed it was safe to do so."

"Our biggest killer is speed."
Lower default speed limits would save lives, road safety researchers say."In Australia, we have one of the highest default local speed limits in the world...We seem to think in Australia that to get people to slow down, we need to change the way our streets are structured. There are some motorists who think it is their right to drive in a way that puts themselves and innocent road users at greater risk of being killed or seriously injured."
Bellingen main (shopping) thoughfare is hostile to people. The mobility design of so called 'upgraded' roads (such as Gleniffer Rd., North bank Rd. and Roses Rd.) around the town is enticing motorists in cars and trucks to recklessly race from A to B, degrading the in between landscape.
