  1. Rural road deaths increasing

"A new report has identified an increasing number of fatal crashes on rural and regional roads".

"An analysis by the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) found 906 people died on roads outside the capital cities in 2025, a 10.5 per cent increase on 2024. The ARSF understands this to be the highest number of regional fatalities since 2020."

"Deaths on rural, regional and remote roads made up nearly 70 per cent of the national road toll in 2025, despite only about 25 per cent of the population living in those locations." >>

  6. Mowing down children and the racist feeding frenzy that followed.
    Alabama in the 1930s?

"* Two children, who were riding a motorised pushbike and left with serious injuries, were allegedly pursued and mowed down by 56-year-old Gol Gol man Andrew Brien.."

"Mr Brien allegedly pursued the children through the pedestrian-only mall in the belief they were involved in vandalism at his partner's real estate business. However, the court heard the children were "blameless" of any offending on the night."

"The amount and volume of racist and violent comments surged after the incident, with hundreds of social media posts laying blame on the boys and praising the driver."

"The act alone was shocking, but what followed on social media revealed a distressing and damaging ugliness...What we've seen lately in terms of social media is that anger is coming out in really primal responses, in ideas and thoughts and beliefs which do not have a place in a civilised society."

"It is not OK to hurt children. It is never OK to hurt children. It's not OK to call this man a hero."

"No-one should see violence against their children or community being celebrated or joked about...I don't want to see comments that I think would be better placed in 1930s Alabama". >>

  11. Wow - apparently *none* of the #Gardaí are #pursuit trained to same standards as officers in GB / NI (or other European countries).

How even can a country operate like that?

Folk will be constantly at the mercy of reckless drivers or outright criminals / sociopaths. I have also seen quite a few Irish tooters over the years pointing this out

Sorting this out won't be an easy task - #roads in GB were quite lawless until things got cleaned up starting around late 1990s,. #CarCulture is strong, stubborn and resilient, and older #motorists still resent limitations of their "freedom" and many vote for parties such as Reform / Restore out of spite..

  16. Big US‑style trucks are killing more pedestrians in Australia – our research proves it

"We know vehicles on Australian roads are getting progressively bigger: more protective of their own occupants, but potentially more dangerous to those outside them. Here’s what we found:

every additional 100 kg of vehicle weight was associated with a 6% increase in the odds of pedestrian fatality regulation

every additional 10 cm of height was associated with an 11% increase in the odds of pedestrian fatality

utes and US-style pick-up trucks were associated with around 60% higher pedestrian fatality risk than conventional passenger cars

the relationship was even stronger in lower-speed environments. "

  17. “More than half of all road deaths are people who aren't even in a car – they are walking, cycling or riding a motorcycle. When roads are designed as if only car drivers matter, these people are left dangerously exposed,” said Dr Etienne Krug Director of the Department of Health Determinants, Promotion and Prevention at WHO. “We know what works – strong laws and enforcement, safe infrastructure and vehicles with particular attention to lowering speed and addressing impaired driving. This declaration means we must all go further and faster.”

  18. Nudging drivers to share the roads with wildlife

"Motorists are being urged to slow down and stay alert for wildlife as Transport for NSW launches its annual “Animals on Country Roads” safety campaign.

"Between 2016 and 2025, 26 people were killed and more than 1,250 crashes resulted in injuries involving animals on country roads. Kangaroos were involved in the highest proportion of fatal crashes involving animals in NSW, accounting for 44 per cent of deaths over the past decade."

“Driving on country roads means sharing the road with animals that can move quickly and unpredictably...Slow down, stay alert – especially at dawn and dusk – and take note of the animal warning signs. Also look out for animals near creeks and waterholes."

"The campaign runs until 30 June, encouraging motorists to take extra care on country roads and be prepared for unexpected wildlife hazards, including reporting injured animals to WIRES on 1300 094 737." >>

  20. The long road to a bike-friendly Australia
    and the dehumanisation of cyclists

    * "At the rate Australian cities are building cycling networks, a cohesive system is probably decades away. What’s taking so long?

"NSW wants to double active transport trips in 20 years...But at the rate Australian cities are building cycling networks, a cohesive system is probably another 50 years away, experts speaking to The Fifth Estate warned. Progress is slow. (One bike bridge was recently installed in Melbourne after 37 years of lobbying and discussion.)"

"A 2024 report by The Australia Institute points out that less than 1 per cent of federal road funding goes to active transport infrastructure."

"Richter was one of 49 bike riders who died on Australian roads last year, up on the average of around 38 deaths per year between 2012-23. (Thousands more were hospitalised with serious injuries during that period.)." >>

  25. The koala procreation season and car crashes

Speeding combustion engines are one of the major threats to unarmoured koalas. No road is ever wide enough for vehicles in the Bellingen/Gleniffer area. Road signage is regularly knocked down and speeding is the 24/7 norm.

Koalas like to meet up between June and December. This is the time when the marsupials are forced to negotiate a fragmented habitat of roads, settlements and degraded logging sites.
