Small businesses lead the legal fight against Trump's expanding tariff regime, which hits them hardest through upfront tax costs and complex compliance burdens that large firms can more easily absorb. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/commentary/2026/09/07/world/small-businesses-despise-trumps-tariffs/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #commentary #worldnews #trade #tariffs #useconomy #walmart #fordmotor #us #donaldtrump

RE: https://mstdn.social/@dalfen/117221114586080893
#USA national debt is 40 times what it was 45 years ago, when it was considered astronomical.
The govt's "money-out" is much greater than "money-in."
It must raise revenue (⬆️ money-in) & reduce spending (⬇️ money-out). Lowering taxes on wealthy & corporations will ⬇️ money-in. Pursuing wars & kicking tax-paying immigrants out will ⬆️ money-out.
Tariffs won't substitute for taxes because they're unreliable & ultimately unsustainable

More about Bessent's #finance gymnastics (for all who are interested).
Something that stood out to me:
"Every bill-financed buyback pushes the share further above the band. Nobody knows how large the bill share can get before it threatens stability. What history shows is that a #debt stock that keeps tilting toward shorter maturities is usually a sign that borrowing #costs have begun to dictate policy" 👀
10🧵
(end)
#USA #US #USpol #USeconomy #bonds #BondMarket #yields #InterestRates #inflation -
But ~"unlike the Federal Reserve's ability to create money, Treasury funds repurchases by issuing more short-term bills, effectively swapping long-term #debt for shorter maturities... termed 'fiscal dominance,' Treasury directly influences financial conditions, a role traditionally of Fed. Critics say this blurs the lines between fiscal & monetary policy."
And Bessent's #finance gymnastics and snark-laden subterfuge concern me*

And US Treasury Secretary Bessent has also attempted to calm the US bond market & lower yields (to lower the cost of financing US debt).
An explainer:
~"Yields usually rise w/ elevated concerns about #inflation or concerns about US fiscal sustainability, as investors demand greater inflation-adjusted returns"
"Treasury yield curve reflects the cost of US government debt"

Further, various countries hold US debt, and Japan is the largest holder.
US Treasury Secretary Bessent had to intervene recently to prop up Japan's currency. Why? Well one reason is #USA self preservation:
"Volatile markets driven by potentially fiscally-aggressive policies from Japan could extend to the U.S. Treasury markets (US bonds, debt), destabilizing the dollar."

Note: The #TrumpAdmin is twisting itself in pretzels about this, arguing nonsense that 1) that US #inflation isn't bad and mostly related to an energy "supply shock" and 2) inflation isn't caused by growth ("only stupidity," per #trump ).

But is that wise?
Analysts believe that:"If the Fed were to set the short-term interest rate that is its primary tool lower than necessary to achieve its congressional mandated goals of maximum employment and price stability, history suggests that the likely result would be unwelcome #inflation. Lower rates tend to stimulate borrowing and faster economic growth, and when demand grows faster than supply, prices rise."

And another thing –
One of the screenshots in the previous post of this thread 🧵shows how the interest rate on US debt is $970 B, or upwards of a trillion dollars annually (truly mind blowing!).
The #TrumpAdmim seeks to lower interest rates not just to promote growth (as it lowers borrowing costs for businesses), but also to get a better deal on financing US debt.
