  1. I was just thinking about the US government's incentive to prop up companies it takes stakes in.

(Under #trump, the government has done so almost as standard operating procedure, not just when the company or industry is faltering)

The US gov't has been issuing lots of #debt over many years (acting like the corporate bond market in a way, financing activity w/ debt while expecting a "payout" of high US economic growth; the current admin especially so).

Now US bonds are less attractive to investors, causing a big selloff (which US Treasury Secretary Bessent recently failed to tamper much, see the 2nd link below).

  3. ~ "Walmart reported its weakest sales growth in six years, extending a string of data suggesting that #ConsumerSpending —the key engine of #US economic growth—is softening" as people, facing high #prices and economic #uncertainty, spend carefully.

  4. Bessent’s buyback tactic "worked for roughly one day" before #yields went back up 👀

    Concerns:

    • Record $40 trillion US #debt
    • Persistent gov't spending, like w/ #IranWar; budget deficit
    • Consistently high #inflation
    • Increased #oil #prices
    • Americans must spend & borrow more
    • AI-related corporate #spending financed via #borrowing (with uncertain returns)

  11. Full of shit. I don't care if you're leading a hedge fund or a university, if you actually believe this bullshit, you're a lot dumber than you think.

I mean, sure, if you're going by the definition of "insolvent", then sure the US is....

FUCK NO. You can't do that.

The gov't has unlimited ability to borrow money and anyone who has ever held a retirement fund has benefitted from this. Hell, 32 out of 38 OECD countries have a net debt and would be considered "insolvent" according to these authors.

But the practical definition of "insolvency" is the inability to pay your debts. That the US can borrow (and as I've said often, can also buy its own debt via the Federal Reserve), there is no realistic threat of the gov't being unable to pay its debts.
