Well, well. Alberta’s UCP wanted to drop privacy standards surrounding health and health cards by tying Alberta health cards to Driver’s Licenses.
Besides the crush of people jamming the local Registrar’s for their license, some of whom face multiple unexpected hurdles before getting theirs, Albertans are learning that their Health coverage expires.

Worse, now the simple act of handing out one’s Driver’s License to, say, rent out a vehicle, means you’re also handing out your credentials for your health and your citizenship status. Do you think that local private businesses have raised their standard of care concerning your private information? Do you think that these local private businesses will accept greater liability for any misuse or mishandling of your very important personal credentials? I don’t think so.
Do you think the publicly disarmed Alberta Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta is even remotely equipped or consulted for this real world scenario of privacy violations?
Do you think your local car rental company should have your Health Card information so you can rent a car?
Rent a pressure washer?
Rent a U-Haul?
Take that test drive at your local car dealer?
What might you feel if your Driver’s License/Proof of Citizenship/Health Care Card is now automatically stolen and sold in bulk online? Do you think you can cancel it and get a new one? How many times do you think you might have to do this? How many times do you think you can actually do this?
How do you feel when you learn that this new regime for Alberta Driver’s Licenses was to…address fraud?
It’s almost like the UCP forgot what compartmentalization means…or why it was once considered a safety feature to separate parts of your work life and personal life to avoid being hacked.

Based on interviews with individuals whose licenses are available for purchase on this service, it appears to be siphoning images collected by a widely-used identity #verification company based in #Louisiana. KrebsOnSecurity also has learned that the #NewOrleans field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) today launched an official inquiry into the source of the images.

- fixed the formatting of the document
- tried to find out my address where I lived when I first got my license over 5000 years ago
