She’s fine, or: Please double-check
Recent divorce.
Three of us,
still practicing the handoffs:
your mother's meetings,
my front door,
your bus.
You write,
"I'm fine, Abba'chka."1
I pocket that,
then check again.
Forgive me:
I keep expecting
the next software update
to distinguish
she's fine
from please double-check.
- Abba’chka is an affectionate name my daughter calls me, which I coined by combining abba (אבא), the everyday Hebrew word for “dad,” originally from Aramaic, with the affectionate Russian diminutive ending -chka (‑чка). It means something like “Daddy” or “dear Dad”; as far as I know, it is not an established term of endearment. ↩︎
d’Verse Quadrille
The above poem is my take on d’Verse’s Quadrille challenge.
The Quadrille is simply a poem of 44 words (excluding the title), and it can take any form. This week’s challenge was to use the word “pocket” in a Quadrille.

When it comes to partnership, some humans can make their lives alone – it’s possible. But creatively, it’s more like painting: you can’t just use the same colours in every painting. It’s just not an option. You can’t take the same photograph every time and live with art forms with no differences.
