  7. More people are killed on Australian roads.

"Deaths on Australian roads have increased every year since 2020. This is despite the Australian government’s commitment to Vision Zero – having zero deaths or serious injuries on our roads by 2050."

"Unfortunately, 1,317 road deaths were recorded in 2025, a 1.9% increase from 2024. Land transport accidents also remain a leading cause of death for children and young adults, and the third leading cause of injury hospitalisations." >>

Comments: To "look at the entire system of road use" one must not just have the car as the road user in mind but the entire mobility design and their associated industries. The focus should be on public infrastructure that enable active and safe mobility (walking and cycling) for all. "Good mobility design" does not kill, maim, pollute or leads to planetary heating.

"Australian road deaths rising to levels not seen in nearly a decade."

"Last year, 1,266 Australians died from road accidents involving at least one car and a driver, passenger, pedestrian or cyclist. The economic cost of Australian road trauma exceeds $27 billion each year. That's 1.8 per cent per cent of Australia's GDP."
"Vision Zero: no loss of life or serious injury on roads is acceptable.">>
    theconversation.com/can-we-cut

Car dependency in Australia is unquestioned. The 'road toll' is a sacrifice to private mobility in sprawling sub-urbia. The present 'mobility design' gives people no options to travel on (fossil fuel free) public transport, walk or cycle without fear of being maimed or squashed by a SUV.

  14. Killer roads

Where is the infrastructure where one does not have to be propelled by fossil fuel at high speed?
Each (new) road should have a shady and separated cycling and walking infrastructure factored in.
Wildlife crossings all along the way.

Australia’s road toll continues to rise with 37 additional people killed in 'accidents' compared to the previous 12 months, despite a nationwide target to halve road deaths by 2030.

“The rising road toll came despite a National Road Safety Action Plan target to halve deaths by 2030 and cut serious transport injuries by 30%. In 2023, Australia is unable to adequately quantify the extent of road trauma, or the effectiveness of interventions being deployed to reduce it.”

"Five people died and four were injured in three car crashes across NSW since 2pm Monday. Federal data released this week shows the national road death toll increased 7 per cent from 2022 to last year, while the NSW toll jumped 25 per cent."
    abc.net.au/news/2024-01-16/hor

They call for more data on the "death Toll", money and more (killer) roads, but never for a radical infrastructure redesign. No data on "roadkill" of native animals either.

  16. Australia’s rising road toll

“People in regional Australia were almost five times more likely to die in road #crashes than those living in cities last year, the latest statistics show.'

#Children involved in a fatal crash are eight times more likely to have been struck by an SUV than a standard car.”

“The exponential rise in freight truck and heavy vehicle movements has far outstripped population growth.”

  19. FFS, another motor killing in Coburg, that's 4 this year. That's an 800% increase in motor killings over the 15yr long term average of 1 every 2 yrs.

This intersection is notorious for being dangerous and scary even though it's an intersection between two roads with a signed speed limit of 40km/h.

  20. "Emergency services were called to reports of three cars colliding at the intersection of Gaffney st and Landells Rd about 7.15pm on 28 August 2025.

It is believed a Ford Falcon was travelling at a fast rate of speed along Gaffney Street when it collided with a BMW 320Ci and Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the BMW, a 66-year-old Pascoe Vale woman, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver and passenger of the Ford Falcon fled the scene and investigators are urging them to come forward."

This is the second time this year a person has been killed crossing Moreland Rd.

A person hit by a car 60km/h has very little chance of survival and no chance of not receiving life altering injuries.
