FFS, another motor killing in Coburg, that's 4 this year. That's an 800% increase in motor killings over the 15yr long term average of 1 every 2 yrs.

This intersection is notorious for being dangerous and scary even though it's an intersection between two roads with a signed speed limit of 40km/h.

"Emergency services were called to reports of three cars colliding at the intersection of Gaffney st and Landells Rd about 7.15pm on 28 August 2025.

It is believed a Ford Falcon was travelling at a fast rate of speed along Gaffney Street when it collided with a BMW 320Ci and Toyota Corolla.

The driver of the BMW, a 66-year-old Pascoe Vale woman, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver and passenger of the Ford Falcon fled the scene and investigators are urging them to come forward."

I went past this area on my way home 30mins after it happened, the police had blocked off the road, so I didn't know what had happened.

This is the second time this year a person has been killed crossing Moreland Rd.

A person hit by a car 60km/h has very little chance of survival and no chance of not receiving life altering injuries.

Love #data? This is fascinating. What intrigued me is that #NewZealand road deaths are 1/3rd of #Australia and 1/5th of #UnitedKingdom despite our population being 1/5th and 1/13th the size respectively. Food for thought.

Human cost of unsafe driving

"'Selfish' drivers and risk-taking behaviours fuelling road deaths. A recent Australian Road Safety Foundation survey has found 39 per cent of drivers admit to breaking the law on country roads.The head of the Australian Road Safety Foundation (ARSF) says its latest research suggests New South Wales drivers are deliberately engaging in unsafe behaviour behind the wheel. It found 39 per cent of drivers surveyed admitted to breaking the law on regional roads as they believed it was safe to do so."

The Gardaí produce annual (and on-the-go) road death statistics. But I'd like to see them adding what road each fatal crash happened on, or even what type of road, eg motorway, N road, R road, etc

Higher, longer, wider and heavier #cars kill #pedestrians (and other #VulnerableRoadUsers). #SUV hood height is the most significant factor.

"high-front-end designs are specifically culpable for higher pedestrian #Death rates, and this is not driven by other characteristics that are correlated with front-end height.
[Every] 4-inch (100-mm) increase in front end height translates to a 28 percent increase in pedestrian death."

Lets have a look at how Australia's "Vision Zero" strategy is going:
"Cycling deaths rose 30.3%, and pedestrian deaths rose 11.3%." in 2023.

"The peak body says these numbers show annual fatalities are now 13% higher than when the strategy was agreed upon."

When will the Government learn that new laws are almost never the solution. Enforcing the current ones is the solution #SpeedLaws
They need to fund the Garda Traffic Corps properly, and reward them when they succeed; they need gardaí on ebikes patrolling in cities, and in visible patrol cars on country roads. And they need big publicity for basic road safety - driving, safety belts, courtesy
