  1. @Ciarancuffe On a point of information - and I think it's important that the people of Ireland know this - any member of An Garda Síochána can respond to any potential criminal offence they detect, including road traffic offences.

School traffic wardens have reported [130 incidents since January 2024, including] being struck by vehicles, spat at, sworn at and having to dodge speeding drivers, while at work.

Working with Brian Rogers, of the UCD Spatial Dynamics Lab, Dublin Inquirer's Collision Tracker has recently been updated:

    collisiontracker.ie/?ref=masto

It now includes not only hazards, near misses, and collisions reported by users, but also years of data from the Road Safety Authority.

  6. "Reading named worst place for cyclist safety outside London"

    readingchronicle.co.uk/news/26

"Statistics showed that in 2024, there were 277 casualties in Reading on the highway where someone was killed or seriously injured, and 80 of these (28.9 per cent) involved an injury to a cyclist."

  7. The analyst, Hans-Jakob Schindler, says that terrorist groups (and thankfully he doesn't just talk about fundamentalist Islamic groups like IS, but says right wing groups do this as well) advise their adherents to use cars precisely because of the camouflage and the ease of attack.

What so many cities have not attempted is to make it convenient and accessible to get around (including with large loads that people tend to say they need a car for) on public transit, pedestrian-only, human-powered (including with e-assist) cycle-only, and multi-use paths (kick scooter, skating, etc) while simultaneously banning most personal cars.

    #RoadViolence #CarCentrism

  8. Every time there's a terrorist (whether domestic or foreign) attack using a car, I hear all sorts of prevention methods discussed *except* making it harder for cars to be in the city, making it harder for manufacturers to make huge cars, and making it so that it's not so normal to see drivers speeding well beyond the speed limit that those who intend to use them as weapons aren't spotted until it's too late because the "normal" drivers speeding 20 - 40mph above the speed limit provide camouflage for terrorist behavior.

The analyst they talk to says you can only extend the event security area out so far, which is true. But cities *can* create accessible free public transit, and accessible cycle routes and other sustainable transportation alternatives so that there are a minimum of cars anywhere in the city in the first place.

And DW just did a piece on cycle activists in Berlin trying unsuccessfully to get more cycle infra installed.

  11. Good morning - mostly to my poor head, that's completely melted with all the ill-informed and unhinged discussion from politicians and others about

    ✅ hi viz
    ✅ helmets
    ✅ road safety

without a single solitary mention of car drivers. Jesus wept.

  12. @EUCommission *Fewer* cars mean safer roads.

    ✅ Reduce car use
    ✅ Invest in public transport
✅ Curb motor industry lobbying and influence
✅ Apply evidence-based approaches to road safety - including in road design
    ✅ Enforce road traffic laws
    ✅ Punish offenders

Imagine if the Road Safety Authority - or anyone in Ireland - had access to this kind of data (not to mention the data visualisation):

  14. @Jay23Jay @swoonie Sin é.

That said - and to be absolutely clear on this - if I *had* "done something" (whatever that may mean), absolute psycho aggressive dangerous driving behaviour is *also not* justified.

The amount of times I've had drivers using their cars as a weapon against me because of a _perceived_ infringement of some kind (confirmed by the shouting and roaring through a passenger window) is too many to be anything other than a pattern.

    #Rothar #RoadViolence #CarBrain #BikeTooter

  15. @swoonie I swear to god.

One of them slammed the brakes ahead of me, put the car in reverse, before changing her mind, roaring and shouting racial slurs while driving off.

The other drove alongside me, roaring out the passenger window, slowed ahead of me, missed their turn, later eventually catching up to a junction where I was waiting and resumed roaring.

    Absolutely unhinged behaviour.

  17. RE: mastodon.ie/@spillanemike/1166

In Ireland, these crimes are repeatedly treated as offences under road traffic legislation, and not - despite the extreme violence, serious injuries, trauma, and death inflicted - offences against the person, such as manslaughter.

There are specific policy reasons for this, shaped by the car culture in this country.
