#JustWhingeing #StuckInTheLandOfShouldtime to pay my motor reg — there are no BPay details on the notice, i must, apparently,
— have/ use mastercard or visa (i don’t “do” phone calls easily, but can i even pay this by phone?) or…
— use the vic roads appEDIT actually prefer to transfer money by direct credit online than to put yet one more bloody visa number “out there”, so the visa requirement is even more ridiculous from a security viewpoint
there is a lot of guff on the app about how much vic riads cares about my privacy, and how secure the app is.
and some other stuff about digital driver’s licences
and a whole lot of stuff about QR codes 🙄i only know enough about IT to know not to trust links of any description, or QR codes
the less i understand about change, and the more i understand about how performatively clueless some (#NotAll) IT people are, the more frightened/frustrated i become
why do i resent vic roads pushing me to use a phone app to pay my rego? because they want me to accept their assurances about my data privacy, and accept terms and conditions that are a bit too “our bad so sad” for my liking.
our phone numbers are fast becoming our identity card, as well as essential to security in banking etc.
i once had a(n expensive) windows phone die on me for no discernible reason, while i was miles from home, and it took me six weeks to resolve issues while retaining control of my own phone number. luckily (i had the cash to buy an apple phone to try and work my way thru the nightmare.)(this is why i keep a little paper book of codes instead of relying on any kind of software to keep passcodes safe — cos the foolproof back up system failed)

Dear VicRoads, I did not sign-up for your "VicRoads Connect" spam. And your unsubscribe link should unsubscribe, not lead to more emails from "VicRoads - Marketing and Service" and further link-clicking.

Weirdly they also have a section called 'Cyclist Priority' which can be summed up as "can ride a bicycle some places"

After much campaigning this yellow sign was removed from the corner of Dynon Rd/Sims St. It's dangerous because it blocks sight lines between motorists turning here and the cyclists crossing here.
The sign returned a month or so ago, it was placed higher up to not block the sight lines.
A few weeks ago they added this blue sign so that it blocks the sight lines again.
I'm truly baffled at the systemic failure.

"...most intersection are unsafe to have an automatic green man, as pedestrians j-walk and it creates a dangerous situation with possible filtered right turners. A scenario where people see a green man and run to cross the road creates one of the most dangerous situations, with regards to left and right turners.
Studies conducted by VicRoads and the Australian Road Research Board have proven the safety issues with the above."
I contacted VicRoads to ask about making a pointless pedestrian crossing green automatically when it's safe to cross and their response was very telling.

@augustusbrown excellent. Much better than the exposed fwd bike box and left turn combo that #VicRoads so often implements -- cyclists who stop in the box risk being driven over when arrow goes green. When queried, The #VicRoads reply was "While this arrangement may does present a potential minor operational issue, VicRoads does not consider this to be a safety issue"

A recent video of the approach to the Hopkins St/Joseph Rd intersection in Footscray on the two way bicycle path coming from the east.
You can see that sight lines for both the cyclist and driver is terrible.
I've ridden here multiple times a week for years now and I've never noticed that there is a sign that says "Bike lane ends" and a "Giveway sign". Cyclists won't see either of these signs because they are placed too high. There appears to be what is supposed to be a 'stop line' but it's placed too far back from the intersection for cyclists to be able to see anything so it just looks like a random bit of old road paint.
Recently the council fixed the construction hording on the corner it's see through but that doesn't improve the sight lines at all.
The cars get a Stop sign with a stop line that is so far forward that it's in the bike path.
The bike lane paint continues across the intersection.
It's a complete mess created by fools. How is VicRoads so bad at roads?

Why is it cheaper to register a large dual cab ute in Melbourne's growth suburbs than it is to register a small hatchback?
For a sedan, station wagon, hatch or 4WD:
Outer metropolitan $820.80For vehicles for carrying goods including utility and dual cab ute:
Outer Metropolitan $743.80https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/registration-fees/vehicle-registration-fees

"make the road environment safer for pedestrians and bike riders on St Georges Road and Brunswick Street we’ve introduced a safer 40km/h speed limit on St Georges Road and Brunswick Street between Alexandra Parade and Eunson Avenue between 7am and 10pm daily. The speed limit will return to 60km/h outside these hours."
VicRoads in spending a huge amount of money for electronic speed signs to allow them to switch to a more dangerous speed at night. That seems very backwards.

An example of how VicRoads engineers never ride bicycles.
This weird sign seems like it's supposed to be telling cyclists how to make a right turn at the next intersection. But it's 50metres from the intersection and much too high to be in the sign lines of a cyclist.
The sign should be at the intersection and at a people scale. -
The fact that a car chase in inner city #Melbourne is even possible is a massive failure of VicRoads.

Here they've spent $900K on electronic ‘Give Way to Pedestrians’ signs....in case motorists forgot about this very obscure road rule.
-
I'm looking through VicRoads' list of current road projects. There is clearly a push for safety improvements for active transport, but the designs VicRoads come up with are pretty disappointing.
Here they are spending a huge about of money to install 18 electronic speed signs so that the few people driving along St Georges Rd between 10pm and 7am can drive slightly faster decreasing their travel time by pretty much nothing.
Of course this means that the road won't be able to be modified to enforce the lower speed limit.
So motorists will speed. -
Someone forgot the protection at the St Kilda Junction intersection.
The bike lane is also not wide enough to not be illegally close passed.#Melbourne #VicRoads #BikeLanes #PaintIsNotProtection #bicycles

Been needing to get my license renewed, and I can possibly get my gender changed to nonbinary instead of female... here's hoping that I can. If not, at least I can be an Mx and not a Ms.

When are humans going to learn that passwords and ID numbers are not secure. Passwords were a feeble first attempt by the computer industry to secure documents and access. It was secure back then, when only those with computers needed computer security. Now, we all need confidence in our cybersecurity. And along comes VicRoads with "Licence Card Numbers."
It's a number for your currently issued Driving Licence card. Now we have a Licence Number and a Licence Card Number, both on the card. Not on a separate card to keep at home, or only take out if opening a new bank account, on the card. Anybody see the problem here?
Hardware is secure. 90% secure. Passwords are not secures. Maybe 10% secure? I'm #plucknumbering but I'd be in the ballpark.
The first year the big 3 auto manufacturers rolled out rolling code central locking on consumer models, car theft dropped by a massive amount the following year. I remember being on the lines desk when the story came through from Sydney when I worked in Radio in Hobart.
I want a USB rolling code dongle. I am up to the back teeth with passwords, forced changes, failed changes and bureaucrats who roll out security that makes it easier for thieves to open a bank account in my name.

RT @[email protected] (I'm trying to get them on Mastodon).
Another close call on Footscray Road.
Frightening footage that demonstrates just how bad the Dock Link Rd intersection is.
Who will take responsibility to fix it? vicroads or WestGateTunnel?

@DavidBurela #ZLEV needs an easier way to pay for #EV drivers too here in #Victoria.
At the moment, it's a bit like, if we asked petrol car drivers to not pay petrol tax on each tank, then save it for the end of the year. Paying #VicRoads quarterly would help "a little", but weekly would match how people pay at the bowser
Using #UpBank - I set an EV tax saver, at the moment, hoping $15 a week automatically transferred does the trick 🤞
