How do things like cultural appropriation jive with this? I know you've posted in the past about the appropriateness of cooking recipes from another culture, which I found strange because the power imbalance was the opposite than I would have expected.

It seems more useful to talk about raw power imbalances. Yes, acknowledge there are patterns in who is powerful and who lacks agency, but focusing on the imbalance and the abuses, which go from powerful to powerless.

EDIT actually prefer to transfer money by direct credit online than to put yet one more bloody visa number “out there”, so the visa requirement is even more ridiculous from a security viewpoint

why do i resent vic roads pushing me to use a phone app to pay my rego? because they want me to accept their assurances about my data privacy, and accept terms and conditions that are a bit too “our bad so sad” for my liking.

our phone numbers are fast becoming our identity card, as well as essential to security in banking etc.
i once had a(n expensive) windows phone die on me for no discernible reason, while i was miles from home, and it took me six weeks to resolve issues while retaining control of my own phone number. luckily (i had the cash to buy an apple phone to try and work my way thru the nightmare.)

(this is why i keep a little paper book of codes instead of relying on any kind of software to keep passcodes safe — cos the foolproof back up system failed)

Both comments are from the same poster, in the same thread. You can probably guess the context. I've left grammar and spelling intact, because you know, I like to cite my sources accurately.

This is why I look side-eyed at people who claim to distruct #vaccines, or any #medications really, on the basis of #corporate malfeasance. Yes, #pharmaceutical companies tend toward greed and corruption. So do all companies. The bigger they get, the worse their behavior gets, and some pharmas are among the biggest corporations on the planet. It's not why people go #antivax. I'd like to believe it was, because that would mean it might be possible to get through to them. I've learned better. Scratch anyone who uses the kind of vaguely leftish rhetoric in the first comment, on this particular topic, and there's a really good chance you'll find a right-wing loon. #NotAll as needed, but close enough. Most of the rest are lefties who seem determined to prove horseshoe theory.

And it *works*. Lots of mostly reasonable people will nod along with comments like the first, and never even see the second. If it gets posted at all—good propagandists are a lot smarter than this guy.

The effectiveness of this rhetoric is a big part of the reason why we currently have mass murderers in charge of our medical research system. They may kill you, and they will almost certainly kill at least a few people who matter to you. Do not forget.

Conservatives badmouthing Trump? I've seen it a bit lately.

It's not *universally* them trying to prepare for the post-Trump era, #notall one-in-a-thousand blah blah blah, but it's almost that. The stink of Trump is on them the way Hitler is, and I doubt they can get it off, but some of them are preparing to try.

SCOTUS has now ruled for Trump sixteen straight times. How the liberals who used to think that judges were apolitical -- I've run into hundreds, over the decades -- could be so spectacularly wrong about what Republican judges are, I will always wonder. (#NotAll as needed -- there are occasional decent Republican judges. Not on SCOTUS, though.)

Yes, things are worse than they've been. You should be armed. You should practice. You should make sure you've got ammo on hand. (#notall as needed for households with children, mental health issues, etc.)

But this is also not new. Pre-2008, all of this:

continuing my first ever binge of #ER — one of those shows it is easy to zone in or out of.

the first 5 or so seasons were good, then for a few seasons the calibre of writing plummeted.

one of the characters (a physician assistant) early on is infected with HIV by her husband, and we get to see how (in late 1990s) people with the virus were stigmatised. the storyline has a positive outcome.
although the show is set in chicago, occasionally one of the episodes is set in another state altogether

from about season 10 on the episodes are a mix of absolute crap, and brilliant.
— S11 Ep15 the main story is told from POV of a patient experiencing an embolic stroke
— several episodes take place in Africa (Congo?) when US doctors do volunteer work and in the process, show the extent of the AIDS epidemic
— later, one of the main characters works in an Internally displaced persons camp in Darfur, so we get to see the impact of war in Sudan
— another character is in the military and his wife is shunned by other wives for dissing the Iraq war (something along the lines of “do these weapons of mass destruction even exist?” ) - for a US show, there is relatively less patriotic rah rah than one might expect

an astonishing number of episodes involve shootings, shootouts, guns, bullets, military weapons.
nobody in the “illegal drug” storylines seems to be mellow or relaxed, all the drugs induce violence or the trade in drugs leads to violence etc

if there was anything realistic about this show, all white people are clueless racist arseholes, all the not-dominant-culture people are passive in the face of all this offensiveness (I tell myself they are telling themselves in ten years white people will be a minority, and to just hang in there)
the show ran from 1994-2009, so a lot of people are homophobic

but my goodness… in episode after episode people are just plain rude and aggressive. there is a point where expecting good behaviour or manners is a form of oppression, but at another extreme, using bad behaviour to create dramatic moments on screen is just normalising it.

i have met some truly obnoxious blokes over the years but, dare i say it, #NotAll of them think women exist only to be mauled or hit on. a lot of the men on this show are just phuking rapey. if i was raising children i would not let them watch this show for fear they would think it’s natural for people to be arseholes to each other.

For the most part, I think you’re correct. However, in a #NotAll sort of way, I was raised by my gma, who experienced the Great Depression. She taught me stewardship, sacrifice etc, which I’ve passed on to my children. I know there are others like me. But yes, in general: Americans have become coddled and soft.
