In Australia we often end up in the position of comparing cycling against driving and when you do that people envision long physically demanding rides that would be impossible for them to do and something only available to the fit and healthy.
In Victoria most trips are short trips (0-5km) but we still mostly drive them.
For trips in the range of 1-5km the vast majority are still driven in cars with almost all walking trips being less than 1km. This makes sense because our cycling network is geared toward long commuter trips with most major routes being nowhere near local destinations.
A big chunk of Melbourne's cycling network is along rivers and creeks, industrial areas or through parks. This puts them a significant distance away from useful destinations making them mostly only useful for through traffic going to someplace else (usually the CBD).
Short trips to local destinations almost always end up requiring trips on high speed or busy roads with through traffic with no protected infrastructure.
It's usually easier and safer to ride 50km to the other side of the city than it is to ride 1km to the local shops, train station or high school.

Designs for the last section of the St Kilda Rd bike lanes in the service lane outside NGV.
Due to space constraints they've gone with traffic calming and mixing bicycles with traffic for this section.
The most important part of this design is the traffic bollards blocking off the centre median preventing traffic from exiting on to St Kilda Rd and continuing north. Traffic will now need to do a u-turn and head back south meaning that the only reason to be in the service lane is to pickup or drop-off passengers or for tour buses to park. This will mean there will be significantly less cars in this service lane.
The speed limit will be dropped to 40km/h (It really should be 30km/h).
I think this is a good design. It's much better than the current situation.
Any other design would have been really expensive to do or would have required completely removing the pick-up and drop-off area, taxi rank, tour bus parking as well as food truck spaces which would be difficult to find alternatives for.

Hello! Time for an introduction from our blog! We are a worker-owned cooperative delivering by cargo bike in Edinburgh, that has been operating for around a year and a half. We are interested in fairer, better paid work for delivery workers, bicycles, worker owned cooperatives, bicycles, reclaiming public space from cars, social enterprises, bicycles, a less polluted and quieter Edinburgh, and bicycles.
We are looking for like minded people in Edinburgh, who want a better, more equal city that works for everyone, not just those who can afford or want a car. Also looking to connect with the many great projects and social enterprises in Edinburgh, apologies if we haven’t followed you (yet), it isn’t deliberate.
We are a diverse mix of mathematicians, scientists, and musicians. Reach out if you are interested in zero emissions deliveries, would like to get involved, or even just finding out more about our project.

#CyclingGuide now supports getting routes in #LondonON
Published by Mark Connolly on July 17, 2026
"We’re excited to announce a wonderful new milestone! Our Cycling Guide mobile app is now available for use in London, #Ontario, following an extended period of beta testing with people there who like to cycle. As someone with family in London, I’m especially happy that people there will have access to the best available low-stress, #CyclingFriendly routes to get where they want to go.
"We worked closely with the good people at London Cycle Link to reach this milestone. It’s an organization with years of advocacy work to its credit, and the people there bring a deep understanding of the needs of people who cycle in the city: 'We help Londoners ride more. We do this by building skills and confidence, advocating for safe streets and paths, and fostering a thriving cycling culture.' "

I had a customer purchase a new wheel, then realize the dropouts on their 1972 Schwinn Varsity were too small for a modern 3/8" axle. I got to save the day by cold setting their dropouts using a seat post as a lever. The customer was not suitably impressed so I'm gonna need lots of internet points for thinking of this. K'thanks.

Among the many bicycle designs available between 1870 and 1885, one wonders why the model with the large front wheel for speed never quite won over the public 🙃

#micromobility vs #MACROmobility
Some jacksasses think e-bikes/scooters should be classified as #ORVs (Off Road Vehicles). Fuck that. Make the #SUV an "off road vehicle" and ban that shit from the road first.

Are you in Victoria?
Do you care about bicycle infrastructure?
Have you done this yet?It will only take you 1 minute.
Do it now.
