  2. Interesting to see all kinds of FUD on open source/copyleft licences emerging in (commercial/corporate) organisations over and over again.

I'm always feeling like that guy who spots someone on the Internet 'being wrong' when that happens. Just can't help myself.

  5. An interesting #licence war is happening in the #Python world.

The popular `chardet` package has apparently been re-written (by assistance of the Claude #LLM). Undergoing this *version* change to v 7.0.0 the current maintainer has shifted the licence away from the #LGPL to the more permissive MIT licence.

I'm not a lawyer, and I don't know about the deeper backgrounds. While a complete clean slate implementation may justify a different licence, I don't think that anyone who's been maintaining a package for years can claim complete lack of influence on the existing code base. So a licence change from one version to another without consent of the (original) contributors seems wildly inadmissible.

Additionally, if the author claims a complete re-write using Claude, in many jurisdictions (including the US) AI generated content cannot be IP protected. So in that case he'd have had to remove the #copyright (c) claim to his name as well to be at least consistent with the narrative.

This is completely independent of the authenticity of the supposed statement by Mark Pilgrim (original author) of `chardet`.

I'm interested to hear what others think ...

  10. Put guns in the crosshairs⚠️
" #Thailand has 2nd-highest rate of #gunrelated #violence in SEAsia aft Myanmar.. There're now 10.3 million #guns in private hands, incl'g 6.2 million licensed & 4 million unlicensed or illegal guns.. A driving #licence is renewed every 5yrs to make sure motorists r qualified.. makes sense tt #gun #ownership licences shld be renewed every 5yrs to ensure owners r still mentally fit.. Limits on # of guns a person can possess shld be considered"🧐

  13. A #driver from #Essex went on a rampage on Christmas Day in centre of #London, deliberately targeting ethnic #minority and #LGBT+ folk, knocking down one man causing #fatal #injuries and causing life changing injuries to several others.

He was also #drunk and possibly under the influence of #drugs at the time, with history of #vehicle related crime, and had never even had a valid #driving #licence in his entire life!

His sentence was *37* years minimum (he will not leave prison until late middle age) and lifetime ban from driving (this kind of ban is *extremely* rare in #England and Wales)

  22. As usual a good in depth report from #ITV (who still excel at #crime reporting) - in which they confirm the lad had indeed been #hooning #cars that belonged to his customers, and worse, he didn't even have a valid #driving #licence or #insurance at the time!

He had tried to delete the videos, but the old bill must have put a #Cellebrite set on his phone - they've got a few of them and work with #AdastralPark for stuff like this, there's also a special #Cybercrime unit that #SuffolkConstabulary operate in some rural area like #Saxmundham

I counted 2 * #BMW, a #Mercedes #AMG and a #GolfR in the video (if you own one of these, be very careful who you trust with #detailing / #valeting or even any #repair work!)
