A genuinely sad case - #driver clearly wasnt a "good lad", involved with #drugs and under influence when #driving - but I don't think he set out to #crash and kill the lass and badly injure his friend
A wider issue is social circle for young people outside big cities is affected by #CarDependency and #ToxicMasculinity (I suspect his friend and girlfriend admired him for owning the #BMW )
If he'd stopped he'd likely have walked free from Court and got only 3 years ban as no one would have got hurt, but as fun as #partydrugs can be, they can lead to irrational and impulsive behaviour (he's also likely to be on the comedown and sleep deprived which wouldn't have helped matters)

Once again parts of #OrwellBridge in #Ipswich #Suffolk closed due to rush hour #collision (#car vs #lorry) with one #fatality and one #arrest
if its not possible to quickly reduce #CarDependency (and realistically it is not), nor build the #NorthernBypass - then there's a real need to further encourage #FlexibleWorking and more people to move away from 9-5 working hours - all these crashes seem to happen around rush hour, whereas same #A14 highway is a lot quieter in afternoons and evenings (there's still lorries, but they are more spread out and not so many bottlenecks at the junctions)

It is not a fuel crisis,
it is a fossil fuel crisis!Oh dear, We forgot to transition our mobility system
Go e-anything now without the matching active mobility infrastructure. This fuel crisis could last for a while. It’s time for a new approach to fuel use – end it. >>

The fuel crisis and Australians’ love affair with petrol guzzling monster cars
Now that the government is spruiking BIG car owners to "unload excess weight" and do their 'little bit' because of dwindling reserves, we are looking back on last year 's headlines to unravel how we got here.:

Suburban sprawl and public transport deserts
"From the 1950s, sprawling low-density suburbs have been built on the assumption that households would own cars and that public transport was unnecessary."
“It’s really too late to do much in the short term, because we’ve spent 70 years planning in the other direction...The hole has been dug.”
“If we’re interested in equity and justice in our cities, then we need to be providing people, no matter where they live, with a good quality level of public transport access that allows them to get jobs, services and education that are available to people in inner-city areas." >>

Hype for the Future 108D → Modern Suburban Developments in Smaller Communities
Introduction Though suburban sprawl often dominates in the modern outskirts of major and even minor cities, smaller communities, often of fewer than twenty-five thousand (25,000) residents, may have a more comprehensive sidewalk or related infrastructural network, even in the suburban zones. Within such suburban zones, however, the sidewalk network is often identified in the abstract as substandard, as with the sidewalk networks along major highways in modern suburban […] -

How the age of motoring shaped our modern world - or at least how #CarDependency was baked into the culture of #Birmingham and the #Midlands (particularly as it was like the "Detroit of Britain" back then (to some extent it still is but replacing #cars with #crime and #SocialDeprivation )

Transport will make or break Australia’s new climate plan – and time is running out to fix it
"Transport is Australia’s third-largest and fastest-growing source of emissions. On current trends, transport will become Australia’s largest-emitting sector by 2030."
"Urban planning needs to reduce car dependence by promoting public transport, walking and cycling. Large-scale investment in public and active transport is also needed...Real progress means focusing on what we know works: electrification, renewables, redesigning our cities and changing how we travel. Every year of delay makes the task harder. With just a decade to halve emissions, the window for action is closing fast."

Australia’s addiction to mega roads continues despite the spectre of climate change.
" The stream of projects shows Australia’s approach to urban transport is stuck in the car-obsessed past. It’s an approach at odds with state planning policies that prioritise other less-polluting transport modes, such as train and tram extensions, bike lane infrastructure and better pedestrian footpaths.
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned, roads hinder national efforts to meet climate targets. They “lock in” emissions, by establishing long-term infrastructure that commits societies to greenhouse gas emissions for decades to come...Globally, roads account for 69% of transport emissions, and this is growing. Australia's lack of fuel security
"Our way of life
depends upon cheaper oil and fuel coming from overseas, but it does so at the cost of our security and resilience...The thought of not having food in cupboards and fridges or prescription medicines would likely exercise people's minds a lot more than the ill-informed thoughts they had during COVID about toilet paper." >>

On the edge
stuck in commute"Dropping new suburbs on to the edges of cities is a “trap” that comes at a cost.Quick and cheap urban sprawl is no sign of a livable, efficient city. The ripple effects are far-reaching and intertwined, from environmental and health impacts to dependence on cars, lost family time, detachment from friends and entertainment and isolation because of poor public infrastructure."

@SkibuSmith This sounds like the Nevada equivalent of "build a wall and Mexico will pay for it."
I can only assume that the Clark County commissioners are either very stupid or hoping this project will make it look like they are doing something to improve transit. Good transit planning is hard -- much easier to play along with a ridiculous fantasy.
