  2. Today in #Athlone, a Dept of Education Disciplinary Appeals Panel (DAP) meets to hear #EnochBurke's appeal against Jan 2023 dismissal from #WilsonsHospital School.

Burke is transported by #Gardai from #MountjoyPrison. So a day+overtime for 3 Gardai, & use of secure vehicle. #BurkeFamily will be present, so at least 6 more Gardai. Plus costs of the panel itself, & 3 years of Burke's salary, & procedural appeals.

Total cost of #DAP must be about ~€200K. That's before the costs of his trespassing

  3. Less than 1% of #SexOffences lead to #prosecution. More than 99% of sex #offenders are not charged or convicted.

"Just one fifth of sex offences reported to #gardaí lead to prosecution" according to @CSOIreland, and "fewer than 4% of the women and men who have experienced sexual violence as an adult will report to gardaí" according to Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

  6. When will the Government learn that new laws are almost never the solution. Enforcing the current ones is the solution #SpeedLaws
They need to fund the Garda Traffic Corps properly, and reward them when they succeed; they need gardaí on ebikes patrolling in cities, and in visible patrol cars on country roads. And they need big publicity for basic road safety - driving, safety belts, courtesy

  7. Statements from #Gardai about drug #decriminalisation are always fear mongering about things that already exist under the current approach, the approach they are proactively trying to maintain and in a lot of cases only exist because of that same prohibition and criminalisation approach.

I give very little weight to their input since the whole reason its a discussion in the first place is because their way doesnt work and harms communities. A fact they really dont seem bothered about.

  8. Excoriating letter to Irish Times about Irish road design, Garda enforcement of driving laws, and willing to institute proven solutions to save cyclists and pedestrians from dangerous drivers irishtimes.com/opinion/letters #RoadLaw #RoadDesign #Councils #Gardaí #Ireland

  9. Should all Gardaí be armed as the police forces in other countries are? When they were established DURING THE CIVIL WAR, Michael Staines, the first commissioner, said they would not be armed because: 'The Garda Síochána will succeed not by force of arms or numbers, but on their moral authority as servants of the people.' And they did. Think about the courage and wisdom of that decision in a time when armed rebels still controlled parts of the country.
