  1. Dumped wildlife and
depressed and suicidal vets: excessive workloads and out-of-hours work, unsatisfactory remuneration, client abuse, and unclear regulations.

A "report found a lack of consistency with local governments and unclear legislation had led to a public perception of vets as "the default drop-off location" for injured wildlife and other found animals, despite the responsibility lying primarily with local and state governments."

"Six of the 32 recommendations related directly to challenges faced specifically by regional vets, including an "unreasonable level of responsibility" for the care of lost and unowned animals, such as injured wildlife...Wildlife is one of those things that we're all deeply passionate about, that we want to help our native wildlife … but it does come at a strain in the cost to the clinic that is, at this point, not covered at all."

"Vets say daily abuse and a lack of understanding from clients are one of the biggest factors causing them harm." >>

  2. Speed over comfort today. Saw lots of roadkill: an owl, a rabbit, a rat and a grouse and managed to avoid joining them. My trip to the bike hub seems to have reduced the play in my cranks and the creaking at least is gone for now.

  3. Statements that you need to get used to, if you're good friends with serious Indigenous artists, who are huge on traditional cultural arts/crafts work.

    - "I got a roadkill call. Can you bring some knives to help skin it?"
    - "I'm picking you up in an hour. Wear your grungy clothes. We are picking up some roadkills!"
    - "It's 2am. Can you help me go collect a roadkill deer & help me skin it on my porch?"
    - "I'm running late to come get you because I had a fresh roadkill alert & I went to get it!"

I forgot the most important beginner one!
    - "Get used to super stanky smells! The smells of rancid animal death leads to glorious smells of new art life!"

I'm used to to dank ass death smell now. It took 2 months to not feel super nauseous whenever we loaded up roadkills in vehicle.

  5. While roller skating in traffic today, I came across this interesting bit of roadkill. In the sunlight I thought it was a real flower; pressed flat by the passing cars and trucks. But, on closer examination of image, I suspect it's made of plastic. Still... is it art?

Attention needs a tall fence, and a short leash when out on walk. It doesn't need to run free in the park bouncing from one smelly thing to another.

  8. #Oregon #ecologist on state’s efforts to create safe #WildlifeCorridors over busy #roadways

Image: "This undated artist's rendering from the Oregon Department of Transportation shows the design of an overpass crossing for wildlife spanning above four lanes of traffic on I-5, looking southwest. ODOT is expected to begin construction on the crossing in 2028 in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, less than two miles north of the California border."

"The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates 14.5 million wild vertebrate animals are killed on Oregon’s roadways each year. Data shows it’s difficult to control driver behavior with things like road signs and traffic regulations. A more effective way to mitigate animal fatalities is by redirecting the animals themselves.

"#WildlifeCrossings — human-made structures that allow animals to safely pass through habitats near roadways — have been a successful tool in preventing animal-motor fatalities. States like #Montana, #Colorado and #California have over 100 wildlife crossings, while Oregon has only six.

"Rachel Wheat is a spatial ecologist who serves as the wildlife connectivity coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. She joins us to discuss her work and tactics for improving transportation infrastructure for wildlife in Oregon."

  9. #UK - How #WildlifeCorridors Are Helping Animals Survive In #Urban Areas

    By Sarah Whitmore / 20 May 2025

Excerpt: "How animals actually use these corridors

"Let’s take #hedgehogs. Urban hedgehog populations are declining sharply — partly because their ability to roam has been limited by garden fences, walls, and roads. A hedgehog might need to travel over a kilometre in a single night to find enough food and a mate. The Hedgehog Street campaign has shown that something as simple as a 13 cm hole in a garden fence can turn a neighbourhood into a habitat network.

"#Bats, which are legally protected in the UK, rely on uninterrupted linear features like tree rows and waterways to navigate. When gaps appear in these features — from tree removal, #LightPollution, or #development — their movement is disrupted. Creating corridors that link #roosting sites with feeding grounds can dramatically increase their chances of survival.

"#Amphibians, especially species like common toads, face seasonal danger when crossing roads to reach breeding ponds. #UnderRoadTunnels and #AmphibianFriendly #drainage routes, used in projects supported by organisations like #Froglife, have proven successful at reducing #roadkill and supporting local populations.

"#Pollinators like #bees and #butterflies also benefit immensely from corridors. Isolated #wildflower patches can’t support long-distance foraging. But when these patches are linked — even via #roadside verges or #SchoolGardens — insects can move more freely and establish healthier, more resilient populations."

  14. Roadkill Laws in South Carolina: Safe & Legal Salvage Guidelines

You're driving down a South Carolina highway when a deer suddenly jumps in front of your car. After the unfortunate collision, you might wonder if you can legally take the animal home instead of letting it go to waste. In South Carolina, it is legal to harvest roadkill for eating, but you must report it to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. The state recognizes that roadkill can provide usable meat, and they've created a simple process for residents to follow. This practical […]

"Three males engaging in unexpected “affiliative” behaviours. They were grooming each other, sniffing each other’s genitals and vocalising to each other in soft, high-pitched calls, similar to the sounds baby koalas make... High density means the home ranges of koalas are more likely to overlap and their interactions will be more frequent. It also means competition for food, space and mates can be especially high. " >>

  29. Koala deaths though road and highway crashes

“There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

There seems to be a lack of impact data on the 'dispersed' koalas of the 'upgraded' Gleniffer 'Highway' through the industrially logged forests of Bellingen/Gleniffer. The 50s mobility design has achieved its goal, more traffic is speeding now. Meanwhile, photos proliferate of 'koalas in roadside trees'.

Five Koalas have been hit on Broken Head Road this year, and many more in other Koala hot spots across the Byron Shire.

The Koala Zone "signs were funded by a grant from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy and Environment, under the NSW Koala Strategy. Koala road strikes and driver speed will be monitored at the sites over the next four years to help us to understand the impacts of vehicle-activated signs on driver speeds and koalas."

  33. Many people dislike the seemingly ever-larger number of ever-larger pickup trucks on the roads in North America these days.

It's not your imagination. The population of these trucks is increasing beyond the ability of their environment to support them. The reason?

Too many people are failing to neuter their trucks. You can see intact trucks moving around the cities daily.

Be a good citizen. If you see an intact super-truck, neuter it yourself! It only takes a moment. Also the owner, if you can find them.
