The koala procreation season and car crashes

Speeding combustion engines are one of the major threats to unarmoured koalas. No road is ever wide enough for vehicles in the Bellingen/Gleniffer area. Road signage is regularly knocked down and speeding is the 24/7 norm.

Koalas like to meet up between June and December. This is the time when the marsupials are forced to negotiate a fragmented habitat of roads, settlements and degraded logging sites.

The great koala - glider national park - logging an environmentally significant area

"The Minns Labor government promised to create a koala national park before the state election more than two years ago, but has not taken a decision on the boundaries and has allowed logging to continue. Between April and July 2024, the surveys detected greater gliders at 82 sites. “There were five koala deaths on this section of the Bruxner Highway in August alone and any protection measure we can take to reduce that toll is worth taking. A section of the highway between Lismore and Casino will have the speed reduced from 100km to 80km in a bid to reduce koala deaths...Members of the public regularly call us about koalas in roadside trees, which causes sleepless nights wondering if they will be the next ones hit that we have to pick up.”

Australia's roads are "killing corridors" for biodiversity

"Appin Road is known as Australia's 'killing corridor' because of the large number of endangered koalas killed on the stretch. Increased traffic on south-west Sydney's Appin Road has resulted in 32 of the endangered marsupials being killed on the notorious stretch since July 2022 – roughly half of all deaths in the district over the same period. Wildlife advocates have long referred to it as Australia's "killing corridor".

Koala in the gutter
In Bellingen, we reported about the widening of Gleniffer road to aid tourism and the timber extraction industry. Once a quiet thoroughfare, Tuckers Nob SF is now logged and clear-felled in large parts. Vehicles are enticed to speed though the once remnant forests where koalas had their home. Recently one disoriented koala was viewed in the gutter. It seems a matter of time before the speeding vehicles will knock down the last homeless marsupials.
