  6. #Oregon #ecologist on state’s efforts to create safe #WildlifeCorridors over busy #roadways

    By Malya Fass (OPB)
    Jan. 7, 2026 11:38 a.m.

Image: "This undated artist's rendering from the Oregon Department of Transportation shows the design of an overpass crossing for wildlife spanning above four lanes of traffic on I-5, looking southwest. ODOT is expected to begin construction on the crossing in 2028 in the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, less than two miles north of the California border."

"The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates 14.5 million wild vertebrate animals are killed on Oregon’s roadways each year. Data shows it’s difficult to control driver behavior with things like road signs and traffic regulations. A more effective way to mitigate animal fatalities is by redirecting the animals themselves.

"#WildlifeCrossings — human-made structures that allow animals to safely pass through habitats near roadways — have been a successful tool in preventing animal-motor fatalities. States like #Montana, #Colorado and #California have over 100 wildlife crossings, while Oregon has only six.

"Rachel Wheat is a spatial ecologist who serves as the wildlife connectivity coordinator for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. She joins us to discuss her work and tactics for improving transportation infrastructure for wildlife in Oregon."

#Ecologist & #IpswichCityCouncil #waterway health officer Jack McCann said the Brisbane River cod went extinct sometime in the 1920s or 1930s.

Their disappearance led to the river losing one of its key apex predators.

  11. As #Norway Considers #DeepSeaMining, a Rich History of Ocean Conservation Decisions May Inform How the Country Acts

In the past, scientists, industry and government have worked together in surprising, tense and fruitful ways

by Christian Elliott, April 21, 2025

"At the #Arctic #MidOceanRidge off the Norwegian coast, molten rock rises from deep within the Earth between spreading tectonic plates. Black smoker vents sustain unique ecosystems in the dark. Endemic species of long, segmented bristle worms and tiny crustaceans graze on bacteria mats and flit among fields of chemosynthetic tube worms, growing thick as grass. Dense banks of sponges cling to the summits and slopes of underwater mountains. And among all this life, minerals build up slowly over millennia in the form of #sulfide deposits and #manganese crusts.

"Those minerals are the kind needed to fuel the global green energy transition—#copper, #zinc and #cobalt. In January 2024, Norway surprised the world with the announcement it planned to open its waters for exploratory deep-sea mining, the first nation to do so. If all went to plan, companies would be issued licenses to begin identifying mineral deposits as soon as #Spring2025. To some scientists who’d spent decades mapping and studying the geology and ecology of the Norwegian seabed and Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge, the decision seemed premature—they still lacked critical data on the area targeted for mining. The government’s own Institute of Marine Research (IMR) accused it of extrapolating from a small area where data has already been collected to the much larger zone now targeted

“ 'Our advice has been we don’t have enough knowledge,' says Rebecca Ross, an #ecologist at IMR who works on Norway’s #Mareano deep-sea mapping initiative. She says the decision was based solely on the #geology of the area. Taking high-resolution scans of the seabed and sampling its geology is the first step when research ships enter a new area, but critical biological and ecological research is more difficult and tends to come later—which is the case on the ridge area targeted for mining. Ross says it’s certain that area contains vulnerable marine ecosystems that would be affected by the light and noise pollution and sediment plumes generated by mining. The IMR estimates closing the knowledge gap on the target area could take ten years.

"The same conflict, with a partial scientific understanding misinterpreted and used to justify resource extraction, is playing out in the #Pacific, where mining pilot projects are already underway in international waters. Years before, scientists funded by industry scouted the #seabed there, discovering both valuable minerals and new forms of life."

  17. When I look at this, I see a #tree; a beautiful, living thing, with leaves and flowers, which brings a stark, spare Winter beauty, and green summer shade.

When an #ecologist looks at this, they see a world; an ecosystem involving the tree itself, fungi, nearby trees and plants, insects, birds, squirrels, the environment in which it exists ...

When a #capitalist looks at this, they see firewood.

Finally - we have 2.5 days of decent, drizzle with just shy of 2” of rain. And … I plants are blooming. Just before winter. (??)

We are still in a drought and rain deficit, but the fire risk should be abated.

Today in the #bronx #nybg the Lilacs have real, fragrant flowers and the Magnolias see resplendent with fuzzy buds. Like it’s March.

Can my #ecologist friends please explain this to me? Has #climatechange confounded our flora?

    #WatershedWatchSalmonSociety is a #ScienceBased #charity working to defend and rebuild B.C.’s #WildSalmon.

Watershed Watch Salmon Society was founded two decades ago by a small group of passionate #conservationists. Led by #ecologist Craig Orr, they noticed that while a lot of work relating to #fisheries and #HabitatRestoration was being done on the ground on local #waterways, no one was pulling together the pieces to confront #policy decisions at the federal and provincial levels.

Craig and his associates launched Watershed Watch Salmon Society to fill that gap, offering #ScientificExpertise to policy makers, and highlighting the large scale issues affecting local waterways, from #FishFarms to #ClimateChange.

Watershed Watch Salmon Society involves many people beyond our paid staff and dedicated board members. We have thousands of supporters and a growing crew of #volunteers who are passionate about wild salmon. Whether you read our emails, sign our petitions, donate, get out in your #community to talk about our work or join us in the field, you are an important part of Watershed Watch.

  35. Forests currently absorb almost 25% of human-made CO2 emissions. Prolonged droughts could lead to forests emitting more CO2 than they can absorb, says #ecologist @Ana__Bastos from #UniLeipzig. #drought #forests #climatechange #co2emissions

  41. The right to #protest is under threat in #Britain, undermining a pillar of democracy

    By JILL LAWLESS
    December 26, 2023

LONDON (AP) — "For holding a sign outside a courthouse reminding jurors of their right to acquit defendants, a retiree faces up to two years in prison. For hanging a banner reading '#JustStopOil' off a bridge, an engineer got a three-year prison sentence. Just for walking slowly down the street, scores of people have been arrested.

"They are among hundreds of #environmental activists arrested for peaceful demonstrations in the U.K., where tough new laws restrict the right to protest.

"The Conservative government says the laws prevent extremist activists from hurting the economy and disrupting daily life. Critics say #CivilRights are being eroded without enough scrutiny from lawmakers or protection by the courts. They say the sweeping arrests of peaceful #demonstrators, along with government officials labeling #EnvironmentalActivists #extremists, mark a worrying departure for a liberal democracy.

"'Legitimate protest is part of what makes any country a safe and civilized place to live',' said Jonathon Porritt, an #ecologist and former director of #FriendsOfTheEarth, who joined a vigil outside London’s Central Criminal Court to protest the treatment of demonstrators.

"'The government has made its intent very clear, which is basically to suppress what is legitimate, lawful protest and to use every conceivable mechanism at their disposal to do that.'"
