Just finished reading "Holler: A Graphic Memoir of Rural Resistance" by Denali Sai Nalamalapu. An excellent graphic novel about resistance to the Mountain Valley Pipeline in Virginia and West Virginia. Although the pipeline is sadly operational today, resistance delayed it by more than twice the originally-planned timeline, and increased the cost tremendously. This kind of action increases cost and risk projections for pipelines all around the world and slows down capitalist extraction even where it can't stop it.
The book is lovely, drawn from interviews with 6 different activists and including a variety of perspectives on resistance, including an indigenous perspective. A gray thing to read if you're into #SolarPunk, #anarchism, or #ClimateJustice, or just curious. I've included a picture of a page talking about building towards future communities here.

After waiting in a reception line, unemployed drifter #LeonCzolgosz pulled out a $4.50 revolver he'd recently bought and shot the President 2x at 4:07 pm.
“I done my duty,” he reportedly said as the 58 yr old #McKinley recoiled and put his hands over his wounds. A black waiter toppled the assassin, as police and soldiers and men waiting in line hit and kicked Czolgosz who was soon blood-spattered, beaten and unmoving. McKinley was half conscious and is said to have muttered “Be easy with him, boys”.
By 5:20 pm surgeons had McKinley under ether and were attempting to remove the bullets that had penetrated him. “The greatest difficulty was the great size of President McKinley’s abdomen and the amount of fat present,” the surgeon later noted.
Two days after the shooting, doctors told reporters the #RepublicanPresident and civil war #veteran was past the danger point and they were considering trying one of Edison’s new X-ray machines to help locate the remaining bullet hidden in the President's fifty-six-inch girth, but they never did.
Gangrene had reportedly set in, and the President passed on Friday, September 13th.
“I shot the president because I thought it would help the working people and for the sake of the common people. I am not sorry for my crime,” stated 28 yr old Leon Czolgosz just before he was executed on October 29th after a very speedy trial.
Auburn Prison guards plopped him in an #ElectricChair, tightened straps on his head and twelve minutes past seven, 1,700 volts of electricity coursed through Leon Czolgosz, and afterwards his corpse was unceremoniously dissolved in carbolic acid, wiping all traces of his existence from the earth.
The successor to the Presidency Teddy Roosevelt, never publicly mentioned the assassin by name, but described #anarchism as a crime against humanity itself rather than as a form of political protest.

# FINALIZATION OF SDF INTEGRATION PROCESS
In the end of August Mazlum Ebdi announced the completion of the integration of SDF into the new Syrian army, composed of 3 divisions in Hasakah and 1 in Kobane. The integration of Asayish in the ministry of interior is undergoing some new developments as well, with YPJ integrating in it as well as a new Asayish structure in Afrin.
# CLASHES ON THE RETURN OF SEREKANIYE
Hundreds of displaced families from Serekaniye returned to their homes at the beginning of August, but they were halted by remanent groups of SNA militias and other pro-Turkish groups, who attack the convoy upon its arrival. Men armed with knifes and sticks, some even with firearms, charged against Kurdish civilians screaming anti-Kurdish slogans and threatening to kill them. Several people were injured, and the attacks continued over night. In many Kurdish cities demonstrations took place to denounce those attacks.
# ISRAEL BOMB AL-ZUHUR AIRBASE
On August 19 Israel bombed the al-Zuhur airbase, where the Turkish army was planning to transport military equipment. The attacks took place when the base was empty, and Israel claimed it followed warnings issued to the Turkey to prevent military build up in Syria. The Syrian government denounced the attack, the US also criticized it. It is one more example of the growing tensions between Turkey and Israel in Syria.
# NORMALIZATION OF SYRIA
The US removed Syria from the US State Sponsors of Terrorism list. With this restrictions on banking and finance are also lifted. Global electronic payments, eg. with MasterCard, can now be done in Syria.
Framework law in Turkish parliament
On August 10 the Turkish parliament approved a law to proceed with the peace process and dissolution of PKK. The law provides some legal frame for PKK member to not be prosecuted if they lay down weapons, insisting that it does not apply to those accused of "specific serious crimes" neither high rank PKK members. It does not address any Kurdish demands for political and cultural rights, but is being presented as a first step for the ongoing negotiations on the peace process.-----------------------------------------------------------------
EVALUATION
# ON RIGHTS ON PAPER, REALITY ON THE GROUND
Al-Sharaa's Presidential Decree 13 recognized Kurdish as a national language and permits Kurdish-language education. On the surface, that's a big deal. In practice, though, the gap between the decree and what's actually happening is where the real tension lives. The August 30 protests at Rojava University and the 4,265 teachers in Afrin and eastern Aleppo facing an uncertain future make it clear that even a year on, Kurdish-language education is quietly being eroded. Crucially, none of these rights are anchored in a constitution, and Kurdish representatives weren't at the table when the constitutional drafting process kicked off in March 2025. That's not a great foundation for reconciliation.
The Kurdish project isn't over, but it's narrowing or shifting from a model of territorial administration toward a much more constrained negotiation over cultural rights, local governance, and administrative competences. If that process keeps stalling without real progress for Kurds, it risks setting a precedent that other minority communities in Syria will end up facing.
# ON THE ECONOMIC SQUEEZE
Integration has also meant a noticeably worse economic situation in the northeast. The region was never rich, but it had a degree of self-reliance — oil revenue, local trade, its own management. Since the handover to Damascus, fuel subsidies have been cut, drinking water is a growing problem in several areas, and prices have been climbing. DAANES kept things as stable as it could with the resources it had; now that the central government is in charge, basic services and access to critical resources have become a much bigger issue than they were before.
# ON THE SDF'S DISSOLUTION
Internally and abroad, the SDF's dissolution was framed as a "historic" moment. From the DAANES side, the picture is a lot more complicated. The SDF had been the largest organized military force outside Damascus's control for over a decade, and its dismantling wasn't really a negotiation so much as an imposition. The strong influence of Turkey, not just the government of al-Sharaa but also on the diplomatic US mission in middle east, has been critical. Erdogan attempts to get a green light for a big operation in northern Syria against SDF was not a secret. To avoid that and prevent such a doomsday scenario for the Kurdish population in Syria, SDF sat on the negotiation table to salvage certain degree of autonomy from SDF forces. The final agreement resulted in the integration of SDF in divisions local divisions (3 in Hassakah, 1 in Kobane), keeping their command structures and their territorial integrity. Assayish (civil defense forces) got integrated in the ministry of interior in a similar deal, keeping also local autonomy. After months of negotiations about the role of YPJ in the new Syria, it finally got integrated in the ministry of interior, not in the military forces as intended.
The final agreements translate into big concessions with not many gains. Some basic recognition of cultural and political identity of the Kurdish people has been acknowledged by the new Syrian government, with Newroz recognized as a national holiday and Kurdish language as a subject in schools. On the ground, we can see many Kurds discontent with the results, deepening resentment and questioning the legitimacy of the new government. The self-administration and SDF showed their commitment to protect Kurdish lives, accepting to dissolve in order to avoid war. Now all the efforts on building autonomy are gonna be put to real test. The grassroots organizing, with hundreds of local communes, academies and cooperatives, were to become the main vehicles of transformation of a democratic society.
Rojava never aimed to become an independent part of Syria. It aimed to develop the revolutionary practices and blueprints to become a free society. Not just for Syria, not just for Kurdistan, but beyond. After a decade and a half of revolutionary process, with all the victories and the losses, a new balance of power emerged in Syria. The revolutionary movement learned a lot, the Kurdish Liberation Movement is now recognized internationally as a leading force and guidance for revolutionaries all around the world. Now is time to put once again all lessons learned in practice.

# 19TH JULY CELEBRATIONS
19th of July, anniversary of the Rojava revolution, was celebrated all around northern Syria. Delegates and spokespersons of the revolutionary movements spoke at big events where celebratory events were held. Many women gatherings emphasized the importance of YPJ, claiming their role in the revolution and the need for a solution in the ongoing integration negotiations.
# RETURN OF IDP AS CRITICAL STEP FOR INTEGRATION
One of the critical issues of the integration process is the return of internally displaced families. A convoy of 500 families is expected to return to Serekaniye at the end of this first week of August, even if tensions and and threats are still a constant reality for Kurdish families returning to the region due to the extended presence of militias affiliated with the Turkish State. More families are also returning to Afrin villages and towns, with constant reports of destroyed and looted houses as well as security threats against returnees.
# ALOUK WATER STATION REHABILITATION
Ongoing works for the Alouk water station rehabilitation are expected to finish soon. After recent tests, the water station located in the Serekaniye countryside resumed its work after years not functioning due to the Turkish militias intervention. It is expected to once again provide water to Hasakah region and beyond, but due to extended periods of degradation there are many tasks of maintenance that are being finished to resume its operations. An inauguration event was disrupted when some armed groups affiliated with the Turkish militias attack the official convoy that visited Serekaniye. This official convoy was composed by Noureddin Issa Ahmed, former SDF commander and current Hasakah governor, together with a delegation of the Syrian government.
# WHEAT HARVEST SEASON
The wheat harvest season is coming to its end, with a positive evaluation. Besides some fires that destroyed fields in different regions, the season was good and over 3 millions of tons of wheat had been collected over all Syria, with Northern Syria playing a prominent role. Works for improvement for facilities like warehouses, silos and other storage centers are important to ensure good administration of this important resource that is an important source of income for many farmers of Syria.
# NATO MEETING AND LEBANON BUILD UP
During the NATO meeting held in Istanbul in early July, a meeting between al-Sharaa and Trump was held. After that meeting, Trump made declarations hinting at preparations for a Syrian intervention in Lebanon to "deal with Hezbollah". Nevertheless Syria’s president denies plans to enter Lebanon, even as his government tightens pressure on Hezbollah-linked routes and networks. The evidence points to calibrated border pressure, not an imminent invasion, stepping up efforts to disrupt arms smuggling and dismantle networks linked to the Iran-backed group that was one of the main support of Bashar al-Assad regime.
# REMNANTS OF THE 2019 TURKISH INVATION IN THE REINTEGRATION PROCESS
As the integration process continues, the fates of some Kurdish people who stayed in grey zones since the Turkish offensive of 2019 are being resolved. Dozgin Temo, known by her combat name Çiçek Kobanê, a fighter for the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Turkish court in Şanlıurfa. Videos from how she was captured in 2019 where islamist figthers where threatening her had strong impact on social networks. She was transferred to Turkey where she was recorded in video as a proof of life to dismiss rumors of summary execution. Now this sentence of life imprisonment raised strong reactions, questioning the approach of the Turkish State with the ongoing peace process. On another track, 2 health workers of the self-administration captured in the M4 highway by Turkish affiliated military groups in 2019 have been recently released in the ongoing prisoner exchanges. After 7 years captive without any trial or any legal process to justify their imprisonment, their families celebrated their return.'
# TURKISH PARLIAMENT WORKING A LEGAL FRAME FOR PEACE PROCESS
Turkey is currently finalizing a Framework Law to provide the legal basis for the disarmament, dissolution, and reintegration of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), marking a shift from previous political-only negotiations to a legislative process overseen by Parliament. The Turkish government intends to pass this temporary, standalone law before the parliamentary summer recess in August 2026, following negotiations between the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the National Movement Party (MHP), and the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, with Abdullah Öcalan having reportedly agreed to the draft terms. KCK already made statements acknowledging the ongoing process and calling for contention until they can evaluate the terms of such document.
