The right-wing and conservative campaign against the possibility of a left-wing government in Berlin is fierce. Almost impressively fierce.

One might almost wish the media had shown the same urgency when the Nazis were concerned.

But then, capital has rarely been particularly frightened by fascists. The left is a different matter. The left might actually question who gets to keep the power, the money, and the keys to the building.

The last few days I'd had a craving to see "V for Vendetta" (2005) again - I think because I'd recently seen John Hurt in two very different roles in older movies. He's in V... and it's another type of role entirely. He was an incredible actor.

Anyhoo... I re-watched it tonight. The film hits home in a very different way today than it did when I first saw it twenty years ago, or even the last time I saw it, which was probably six or eight years ago. There's even a bit early in the movie where the authoritarian government makes up a lie about the "emergency demolition" of a very visible public building, which is perhaps a bit on the nose this week.

It was always a good movie, but after the last two years, it rang true in a way that it simply could not have done before. If you've never seen it, you definitely should - but even if you have seen it, I'd suggest it would be a good time to see it again.

It's a shame the US midterm elections are occurring on November the 3rd, rather than the 5th.

Anyone else have a favourite film with a deeply moving anti-fascism theme to it? Other than the obvious candidates of Nineteen Eighty Four, Animal Farm, and perhaps Brazil?

After dinner last night, I had some extended thoughts on Columbia Professor Emeritus of Modern Arab Studies Rashid Khalidi's decision to cancel his scheduled course this fall at Columbia (anti) University, so I wrote up a journal/opinion piece.

Needless to say, I agreed with his decision and think more professors at compromised collaborator universities around the country should be joining him.
