There is something profoundly exhausting about living in a country where a sizeable, brainwashed mob appears to inhabit an entirely separate reality, dreams of a strong Führer and a return to the GDR, and somehow manages to regard antifascism and democracy as radical, dangerous extremism.
Meanwhile, the CDU does what the CDU so often does: it looks at the political landscape, identifies where power might be harvested, and calls that political principle.
And the pattern is almost comically predictable.
A left-wing or Green policy achieves something?
Immediate counterattack.
Media campaign.
Outrage cycle.
Endless declarations that civilization is collapsing because someone suggested making society slightly less awful.
But fascists?
Put them on television.
Give them a microphone.
Let them explain themselves.
Invite them back next week.
Apparently antifascist is a dangerous political label, while actual fascists are simply another interesting perspective for the evening panel.
There is a peculiar inversion happening here: democracy is treated as naïve, antifascism as extremist, social progress as a threat to order, while authoritarianism gets dressed up as “the concerns of ordinary people”.
No.
If your political project requires dismantling democracy, dehumanising minorities and longing for authoritarian rule, the problem is not that antifascists are being too radical.
The problem is that fascists are being treated far too politely.
And I am getting rather tired of pretending that this inversion is normal. 🌱🏳️🌈
