Maja's moving speech before the Court of Appeal #Hungary
We're thinking of you, Maja! Hang in there!
#AntiFascism also means #FreeMaja
‚Looking back at the criminal trial that brought us here today, I want to reaffirm the words I wrote and delivered at the beginning of the trial, during my hunger strike, and prior to the sentencing. Even if my choice of words were different today, standing up for humanistic, anti-authoritarian, and anti-fascist values remains no less urgent.
I would like to remind you of attempted political interference, pre-judgment, the pressure and coercion used to extort confessions, and the absolute determination to convict and punish me. I want to remind us that Orbán and Trump designated ‚Antifaschistische Aktion‘ – alongside all accused defendants – as a terrorist organisation in order to dehumanise us and to intimidate anyone genuinely advocating for our values. We, on the other hand, know what the so-called „fight against terror“ by despots like Trump truly means in reality.
I also want to recall how the prosecution incomprehensibly claims to see „fanatical hatred“ in me, and how the Hungarian judicial authorities placed me in segregated detention to starve me psychologically and emotionally. I want to recall how this constitutional state fails its own standards and turns into a domain of arbitrariness and oppression.
Furthermore, I want to remind both you and myself that worldwide, the banality of evil can be – and already is – cruel to an extent I haven’t seen or could describe, and that when confronted with it, we often react with nothing more than a helpless shrug, including myself. In those moments, the only thing that helps is to reaffirm who I am and to reconnect with our values and ideals…..‘

CW: CW: fascism, authoritarianism, xenophobia, sexism, anti-queer violence, climate crisis, AI and labour displacement
I increasingly distrust the language of “multiple crises.”
AI-driven labour displacement.
Climate catastrophe.
Right-wing populism.
Fascism.
Racism.
Sexism.
The organised backlash against queer existence. We are encouraged to catalogue these as separate problems, each requiring its own specialist vocabulary, institution, funding stream and respectable panel discussion.
But they are not unrelated phenomena.
They emerge from overlapping structures of domination.
The same political economy that renders a worker disposable can render a forest disposable. The same authoritarian imagination that reduces migrants to a demographic threat reduces queer people to a threat against an imagined social order. The same hierarchical logic that demands obedience from bodies demands obedience from nature, labour and dissent.
And when the system produces insecurity, it offers a remarkably convenient explanation:
Not the structure.
The Other.The migrant.
The queer person.
The feminist.
The unemployed.
The dissenter.Someone must be made responsible for conditions they did not create.
This is not an accident. It is politically useful.
So I am less interested in asking which crisis we should address first than in asking what keeps producing them.
Because if we merely treat the symptoms, the machinery remains intact.
And machinery does not become humane because we learn to describe its victims more politely.
Find the structure.
Name the hierarchy.
Follow the power. Then start taking the machine apart.
