Made the pilgrimage to Mecca—correction, the Quaboag Book Shop—this Saturday with my son. It's an 80-minute drive for us, but totally worth it.
If you live in New England and love books, this really is a place you have to visit! It's quite possibly the most extensive used book shop in New England these days. They have an incredible selection of used books, particularly old and obscure ones.

The store is in a rural part of Massachusetts, about half an hour west of Worcester. It's a truly beautiful area.
Here's what I picked up on this trip (not including the ones my son bought):
• Time and Again by Jack Finney (hardcover) - I have several copies, but it's always good to have extras!
• The Impossibles by Mark Phillip - sometimes I pick up a book by an unknown author on a whim.
• Alien Planet by Fletcher Pratt - I don't know if I've read this one, but Pratt is worth a gamble.
• The Artificial Man by L.P. Davies - Something about the cover was weirdly familiar, so...
• The Headless Cupid by Zilpha Keatley Snyder - Haven't read this one before, but Snyder's a good author
• The Secret of Skeleton Island (illustrated Alfred Hitchcock edition) - I love the Three Investigators. What can I say?
• 3 by Finney (Jack Finney) - Three short but very memorable novels. I first read this in high school. I have a copy, but another is always good to have.
• Asimov Laughs Again - I'm an old Asimov fan. Saw him speak live at Bridgeport University about 50 years ago. It was memorable.
• Creating A Genre by Robert A. Heinlein (hardcover, "Virginia" edition) - I loathe Virginia Heinlein, but I heard that these were the unedited versions so I'm quite interested.
• Expanded Universe by Robert A. Heinlein (hardcover) - same

ENTERING THE NEXT CHAPTER : HAMLEY’S SECONDHAND BOOKSTORE OPENS IN CAMBRIDGE
In Nov. 2025, Jamie Hamley and his wife Sheri opened Hamley’s Second Chapter at 132 Main St. in Cambridge.
Jamie, a resident of Waterloo, spent 15 years of his life overseeing operations at Petro Canada gas stations within the city. But his love for literature started early. Growing up in Owen Sound, Jamie spent his after-school hours immersed in local used bookstores, hunting for western novels by Louis L’Amour.
His passion for reading and books inspired his goal of opening a second-hand bookstore, especially when he discovered there were none in Galt.
“My employment at Petro-Canada moved to 3 days a week, so I was looking for an add-on opportunity,” Jamie said. “I have always been a used bookstore customer and an avid reader, so the choice was easy for me.”
The couple collected books for their inventory at a four-day used book sale in Guelph that had 80,000 books available; out of these, they purchased 4,000.
They continued their efforts by purchasing more books through online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji, as well as from individual residents.
“We have an open concept in the store,” Sheri said. “We don’t want to be overstocked and cramped. We like to offer open space for the customers to look around.”
To further support the neighbourhood, the couple has dedicated a table at the front of the shop to showcase local authors.
Aside from books, the store also offers second-hand puzzles, Funko Pops and DVDs. Jamie said they plan to sell games in the future, but since his stock has grown so quickly, he decided to stop buying merchandise for his store in January, to focus on organization.
“It’s important to recycle products to a second or even tenth user,” Jamie said. “Everybody is a reader—some people just haven’t found the right book yet. Maybe they can find it here.”
“We are just starting to see what the community wants,” Sheri said. “We have expanded our non-fiction section to try to meet our customers’ needs.”
Although having space for their store was a big dream come true, Sheri explained that finding a rental space that suited their needs was a challenge.
“I have always wanted a physical store,” said Jamie. “Customers want to have the book in their hands, and you never know what you will find when you search the shelves.”
With a three-year lease in place, the couple hopes that the store will become their full-time focus. Jamie sees it as the perfect “second chapter” and a meaningful project for him and Sheri to share throughout their retirement.

So yesterday, a block of downtown Arcata, CA burned to the ground taking several businesses and upstairs residences with it. It was ten minutes north of where I live.

Ironically, many of the occupants had just moved in—a new gaming store called Dandar's had just relocated there a couple months ago and had a growing, devoted community.
A local public transit bus driver had just moved in a month ago and was notified while they were on a route.
Yet another couple had just completed moving in all their belongings *that very day* and were sitting in their new living room with their two cats when they smelled smoke.
Northtown Books had just become their own employee-owned bookstore after forty years and were excited about the future.
Nothing survived.
Arcata is a lovely old Victorian-styled town, home of Cal Poly Humboldt, fiercely liberal, and sometimes derided by outsiders as a "Hippie Mayberry". But the people there love each other, and there’s a history of openness and acceptance. And the quaint shop where I have some of my greeting cards was literally across the street.
The businesses have insurance, I’d think, but will have to start completely over. The employees are without jobs. And the residents literally lost everything...

AYR’S MUSIC AND BOOKS COLLECTS MORE THAN MEDIA
Situated at 80 Stanley St. in Ayr, Ontario, Music & Books is both the first ever record store and first ever bookstore to open in Ayr.
Beyond just selling vinyls and paperbacks, Music & Books host a variety of events and clubs. There are yoga nights, writer’s guilds, listening groups, book clubs and art classes. They also host readings for local writers and sell the work of local artists.
Owners Jacqui Wright, Courtney Hope, and Julia Mills want Music & Books to be a community center as well as a shop. They consider many of their customers friends.
“We collect humans,” Hope said.
Music & Books was conceived for the community: Hope wanted a record store to support her husband’s vinyl hobby and Wright wanted a space for her child that did not involve sports. Within a matter of days, the friends went from fantasizing about the store to leasing a space. While passionate, Wright and Hope were in over their heads.
“We had no experience, no business plan. We had no money, no idea how to order vinyl, we had no idea how to get in touch with publishers. And then we were like ‘sure we’ll get you first and last month’s rent by Tuesday!,’” Wright said.
Wright and Hope realized that in order for Music & Books to be sustainable, a more organized presence was needed. Mills, who began as the company’s website designer was quickly signed on as a third co-owner.
“We were like ‘Woooh! Dreams! Let’s do it all!’ And she said, ‘that’s great, but let’s do it properly. There are steps,’” Hope said.
Music and Books quickly became a keystone in Ayr’s artistic community, much thanks to the physical nature of their business. Ayr’s community theater runs its box office through the store and the three owners relish introducing local kids to vinyl records. “People just love being in the space…they walk in and they’ll tell us everything about their past, their present, something cool. So, we have a book related to them, you know, or pick them up a vinyl,” Wright said. “Then the stories just flow from there. It’s been the most beautiful, mind-blowing experience I’ve been part of.”

Came to visit Lucky Bookstore - 師大書苑 beside National Taiwan Normal University today!
Very nice place filled with awesome textbooks! I bought a bunch of graded readers, grammar textbooks and some flashcarda that my mom chose for my brother.
Overall a very nice place, sadly, I couldn't speak in Taiwanese Mandarin so I can't talk to the shopkeepers much 😅
Hoprfully to one day revisit this plsce as an NTNU student!
