  1. #PennedPossibilities 1161: Do you have any mythology around the afterlife in your universe?

Quite a bit, actually. “Heaven” and “Hell” don’t exist in this fantasy universe of mine. We have… other things, worse things, shall we say. I’m sure I’ll be diving in deeper when it comes to that particular subject as the days and prompts progress.

Cara Monroe-Woods agreed to attend Silverbrook University for one reason only: respect her father’s last wish. Her priorities are straight: a cushy dorm, some studying, minimal responsibilities and enough time for pilates and coffee breaks. So when a foul-mouthed squirrel starts following her across campus insisting she’s the missing heir to an alien kingdom, Cara does the sensible thing and assumes she’s losing her mind, because honestly, who wouldn’t?

The hallucination theory falls apart when a dark creature attacks her in the university library. The squirrel is telling the truth: Cara is Celestia, heir to a kingdom on a distant planet waiting for her return. The problem? Cara has zero intention of leaving Earth for a place stuck under a magical veil that she doesn’t even remember. Her plan is simple: avoid the bigger problem, master just enough magic skills to not get killed and definitely don’t fall for Black, the broody post-doctoral researcher who keeps showing up exactly when she needs him, and is infuriatingly difficult to figure out.

Spoiler alert: things don’t go as planned. Somewhere between the magic lessons and the friends she wasn’t supposed to make, Silverbrook stopped feeling temporary. When the person she trusted most turns out to be the greatest threat of all, Cara has to make a choice: stay in her comfortable Earth life, or go to the kingdom that’s been waiting for her return.

    Review

The Lost Heir by V.M. Winters is a cosy fantasy novel featuring a lost princess, magical kingdoms, a reluctant heroine, found family, and a little romantic tension. If you enjoy stories about ordinary girls discovering they’re destined for something extraordinary, this one might be worth adding to your TBR!

Cara Monroe-Woods has always felt like she needs to earn her place in the world. Adopted as a baby after being found under the stairs at a subway station, she’s grown up with a complicated relationship with her identity. After her father’s death, she decides it’s time to make something of herself. She enrols at Silverbrook University to study politics and history, gets her first job as a library assistant, and ends up sharing a flat with a group of students who quickly become her found family.

Her plans for a fresh start take an unexpected turn when a talking squirrel named Nyxos reveals that she’s actually the lost princess of Caeldora, a magical kingdom on another planet. With neighbouring kingdoms threatening her home, Cara must learn to use her magic, uncover the truth about her past, and decide whether she’s willing to leave her life on Earth behind to save her people.

One of the things I enjoyed about The Lost Heir was the combination of familiar fantasy tropes. We have the Chosen One, the Reluctant Heroine, Found Family, a magical animal companion, and a portal to another world. There’s also a romance with a mysterious teacher/library staff member who is definitely more than he initially appears to be.

I found Cara a little annoying and spoiled at first, and I was sometimes frustrated by her. She seemed to put up a big fight against accepting the truth about her identity, but at other times she seemed to accept it rather quickly. I wanted her to take more time to process everything she’d learned, especially considering how much her entire world had just changed.

On the other hand, I admired her willingness to return to Caeldora to save her friends and kingdom. It wasn’t an easy decision, knowing she’d be leaving behind the life she’d built on Earth, including her friends and her widowed mother. I was sad alongside her, for everything she would have to give up, even while understanding why she made that choice.

I was glad that Cara eventually came to terms with the two sides of her identity, rather than feeling she had to choose between being the person she’d grown up as and the princess she was born to be. I did find myself wondering how much of that reconciliation was possible when she still hadn’t recovered her memories of her original life, though. Perhaps we’ll find this out in book 2.

And then there’s Nyxos! Easily my favourite supporting character, he brought so much charm and life to the story. I loved having him around, and he added a welcome bit of personality to the fantasy elements.

The world-building was interesting, and I enjoyed learning about Caeldora and its politics. There was a fair amount of information to take in, and some of it felt like info dumping. However, I liked the way the author turned the history lessons into a podcast for Cara to listen to. It was a clever way of delivering the necessary information, even if I occasionally found myself skimming those sections.

I also enjoyed the romantic tension between Cara and Black. He’s a mysterious character, and while I suspected there was more to him than met the eye, I didn’t successfully guess the exact truth about his identity. The eventual reveal changes things between them and gives their relationship a new layer of complication, and just when it seems they might finally act on their feelings, politics and events back on their home planet threaten to get in the way again. By the end of the book, that romantic tension is very much alive, and I’m interested to see where things go in the next instalment!

One thing I would have liked more of was Cara discovering things for herself. Much of what she learns about Caeldora and her past comes from other characters explaining it to her. I would have enjoyed seeing her uncover more of the history, magic, and secrets on her own, rather than being told so much of it.

I also expected Silverbrook University to play a bigger role in the story. Despite the university setting, Cara’s experiences there didn’t have a huge impact on the main plot. The story could have taken place at another university, a high school, or even a workplace without changing very much. I would have liked to see the academic setting woven more deeply into the story.

Despite those criticisms, I enjoyed The Lost Heir. It didn’t blow me away, but it was a good read, and I’m glad I picked it up. There are plenty of interesting ideas here, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

    Should you read this book?

If you enjoy cosy fantasy stories with familiar tropes, a lost princess, a magical world, and a slow-burn romance, I’d definitely recommend giving The Lost Heir a go!

    • For fans of Harry Potter: The Chosen One and Found Family tropes will feel familiar, alongside the magical discoveries and the journey of learning who you really are.
    • For fans of Reign (TV show): Cara gives me Mary, Queen of Scots vibes. She’s a princess who has grown up away from her kingdom and must eventually return home to face her responsibilities and lead her people.
    • For fans of Once Upon a Time (TV show): Cara’s journey reminded me of Emma Swan’s character arc: a girl from Earth who discovers she’s connected to a lost kingdom and must embrace her destiny to save her people.

One thing worth noting is that the romance is very low-spice, with just a few stolen kisses and plenty of romantic tension. If you prefer your fantasy romance without explicit scenes, or you’re looking for something suitable for older teens as well as adults, this could be a good fit.

Overall, I’m giving The Lost Heir 3.5 stars. It was very good, I really enjoyed it, and I definitely recommend it. I’m looking forward to returning to Caeldora in book two!

  3. #PennedPossibilities 1160: Sunday Word Edition: Share something from your WIP pertaining to the word “feline.”

    (For @thatwriterellie.)

Murk is Elric's black cat and familiar, so here’s one of his first appearances. (This is from the third chapter.) This excerpt is also the moment Zerika and Elric see each other for the first time, so hey, I love that. This is just a tiny thing, and Murk actually becomes a major character in the series, but I love the “bombastic side-eye” he gives Zerika in this moment.

  4. #PennedPossibilities 1159: If you told your characters about our Halloween, what would they think?

They would find it absurd. To be fair, though, Elric would also be completely fascinated by how All Hallow’s Eve came to be. He would want to know *everything.*

  5. #WordWeavers 10/17: What is the worst possible first impression someone could get of your MC? Would it be accurate?

To find her utterly covered in blood, muck, and mud. To be fair, this has happened before and will probably continue to happen. She is a lone huntress, and therefore, she fights monsters for coin. It's a normal occurrence, and it also makes for a terrible first impression.

  6. #WordWeavers 10/16: What is one choice your MC made for the right reasons that ended up having terrible consequences?

    Oooooh, spoilers. *River Song voice*

While I can't talk about the choice itself, I can talk about some of the consequences, or rather, how she feels about it. Zerika doesn't immediately regret what she's done, but it becomes apparent later that a different choice could have been made. She's filled with dread and regret over it all.

  7. #PennedPossibilities 1158: MC POV: Where is a place you never want to go, see, or visit again?

Zerika: Oh, Gods. That place. The one where Elric and I were sent, where we found the mirror. I never want to find myself in that castle again. We almost lost ourselves to utter madness.

  8. Heads up for fellow cosy fantasy or graphic novel fans, there's now a graphic novel version of "Legends & Lattes" by Travis Baldree. Here are some sample pics. 9. #PennedPossibilities 1157: Tell us a random, interesting fact about your WIP.

“Mystics” are actually what we would call wizards or warlocks. They’re sometimes referred to as “enchanters” in the series as well. In reality, I just wanted a different name, a different word, and I needed something altogether new. To be fair, I just never wanted to use the stereotypical word “wizard” in my series. Something else had to be as good. So, instead, we call them mystics or enchanters, both of which I love the sound of. 🧙🏻‍♂️ 🔮

  10. #WordWeavers 10/15: What piece of backstory did you invent just for yourself that readers may never learn?

What a great question. Zerika used to enjoy feeding and playing with the family's farm animals when she was a young girl.

  12. #PennedPossibilities 1156: If your MC had (more) money in their possession, what would they do with it?

Zerika would help the poor. It really is that simple. She would help anyone she came across.

  13. #PhantastikPrompts 10/13: Your protagonist gets invited to a soirée—what would happen there?

Something like this exact scenario actually takes place in an upcoming story. It's the second story in the series, actually. Zerika and Elric are invited to a masquerade in a nearby town. While they do attend, they're only on site to find something that's required to unravel a mystery. However, it'll be a fun read. And they get to dance together, so...

  14. #WordWeavers 10/13: What is something your MC would risk their life to protect but would struggle to explain why?

It's Elric. She would risk her life to save him. And if, later on, he asked Zerika why she did it, she wouldn't be able to answer him. Not properly, anyway. She might say, "Because you're needed by this world," or something to the effect. But he'd know there was more to it. He would be able to see it in her eyes, even if he couldn't unravel the truth. In the end, it's also because she loves him.

  15. #WordWeavers 10/12: Which relationship in your story changed the most from what you originally planned?

It's definitely Grigga and Zerika's friendship, which grows and eventually comes later, that changed the most for me. I really love the direction things took. Those two could use more friends. Grigga's friendly, owns a tavern and inn, but she's seen true war and knows heartache. She hides it all behind her friendly demeanor, though. For Zerika, friends are hard to come by. Opening up to Grigga wasn't easy, but it was more than worth it in the end. They understand each other in a way that so few ever will. They've seen too much bloodshed in their lives, and it's finally time for some joy.

  16. #PennedPossibilities 1154: MC POV: Name a time you laughed the hardest. With who, and why?

Zerika: While I can’t really remember when I’ve laughed the hardest, I do remember absolutely laughing my arse off recently. It was when I was out one evening at Grigga’s tavern. She and I were laughing at something Elric had either said or done, I can’t remember which, and he was grouchy. Well, I say *grouchy,* but he was actually trying to hide a smile… Anyway, far too much alcohol was involved and a good time was had by all.

  18. #PennedPossibilities 1153: Do you ever incorporate elements of horror into your work?

With every single project of mine, I do, no matter how big or small said elements might be. After all, they do call me the Spooky Panda, and it isn’t *just* because of my podcast.

  19. #WordWeavers 10/10: What is one thing your antagonist genuinely admires about your MC?

(I accidentally deleted my post. Oops.)

The power that she (meaning Zerika) doesn't yet realize that she possesses. She wants it for herself. The same could be said about Elric as well. She desires his ancient wisdom and magickal power as well.

  20. #PennedPossibilities 1152: MC POV: A time you ran out of options was…

Zerika: My mind immediately goes to my last hunt. For monsters, of course, and for coin. Everything went wrong, and I had to choose who to save. It was a decision that I never want to have to make again. A bad situation quickly turned into one worthy of nightmares. It still keeps me awake at night.

  21. #PennedPossibilities 1151: What is your MC’s relationship to what modern society considers the paranormal or supernatural?

She lives with it everyday. In this series, we have magick, all manner of undead creatures, and spirits all around, among other weird and inexplicable things, of course.

    #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon #TheScarletMirror #FatedByFire #CozyFantasy #Fantasy #SwordAndSorcery #Romance

  22. #WordWeavers 10/9: Your MC finds a letter addressed to them that was never meant to be delivered. Who wrote it and what does it say?

The letter in question is probably a snippet from Elric's journals. How it found its way to her, no one knows. It must be magick. It's about her, of course, and is either 1) his thoughts about how intriguing he's found her in the dreams he has of her, and how much he wants to befriend her and learn more about her life, or 2) how he's falling in love with her the more he gets to know her.

  23. #WordWeavers 10/8: Which character is most likely to make a terrible decision for a very good reason?

Oh, yes. Zerika comes to mind. She would do just about anything to save those around her, even strangers. Then again, so would Elric. He's an ancient being, one who's alive for the sole purpose (as he believes) of saving lives. I could see either of them making a terrible decision for the greater good.

  24. #PennedPossibilities 1149¾: Bonus Question (Courtesy of @sfwrtr): If your character was ill, who would care for them? Would they provide good care?

If Zerika came down an illness of some sort, Elric would *absolutely* take care of her. He would jump right into "medic mode." He’s a mystic, and with his magick he would make sure she was taken care of. He would keep her home in his Divination Tower, heal her, cook for her, use his magickal abilities and potions, and do whatever was necessary to help her recover. He’s done this all his life. It’s second nature to him now.

  27. #WordWeavers 10/6: What is considered completely normal in your story's world that would seem bizarre to us?

  28. #PhantastikPrompts 10/6: Your protagonist needs money and gets a musical job. Imagine and tell.

Oh, god. Just *imagining* this has me dying of laughter over here. Zerika can neither play an instrument nor sing. Elric might be able to help her out, though. Either that, or people would just feel *so badly* for her that they would drop coins into her hat or can, anyway. Probably the latter...

  29. #PennedPossibilities 1149: Think of a choice your MC made. How did it lead to where and who they are now?

It was the choice to seek out the man she had been dreaming of and to learn why it was happening. Zerika is learning how to become a better person now, not just a skilled "huntress" (AKA a monster killer for hire). Every single day she’s changing and softening a little more, but all in a good way. She’s growing into a woman with friends, with a found family, a home, and finding her very own happiness. Oh, and she’s found her soulmate.
