  1. Pre-emptive behaviour in a landscape of intergroup conflict

#Humans have a rather catastrophic habit of getting into #wars, but at least we aren’t alone in our military misery. A diverse array of species—from #ants, to #woodpeckers, to #chimpanzees—engage in violent intergroup conflicts that require careful preparation.
Animal groups modify their actions across a ‘landscape of intergroup conflict’, with social, spatial, cognitive, population, and community consequences.

  2. oh good, arthro-pod is finally doing an episode on fire ants!

on second listen, I've decided to tag
@futurebird , even though its main focus is on two ants as invasive species.

  3. Spotted these growths on my young oak tree. Anyone know what they are? There are ants all around them. #tree #treecare #ants

  4. I have fucking ants in my room now, and every 2-3 minutes I have to check if the itch I'm feeling on my arm or leg is either my hair or another damn ant crawling on me. #ants #insects

  5. The venomous ant *Megalomyrmex symmetochus* lives parasitically in colonies of the ant *Sericomyrmex amabilis*. When individuals of *M. symmetochus* are confronted by *S. amabilis*, they display their stinger and release volatilized venom rather than stinging, even preferring these behaviors after being bitten by the host species--though they will sting.

    Toxic communication to reduce conflict.

  6. Came across this dramatic scene in the park today: These two Messor Barbarus beauties are locked in a territorial dispute. Both individuals belong to the 'Major' worker caste, easily identifiable by their size. These are soldiers from different colonies fighting for dominance. Notice how caked their gasters are with dirt, a sign of a long fight, since they use to be very clean. A fight of titans in miniature.

  7. #Pleometrosis in #ants, e.g. #Lasius #niger, is a #behavior involving the collective founding of a #nest by #multiple #youngqueens, even in later #monogynous species.
    S.Stukalyuk and T.Czaczkes (2024) report on a #hyperdense #population of L. niger in Ukraine with #reducedaggression between neighbor nests+queens during pleometrosis.

  8. “Restaurant Evett, a #Michelin two-star restaurant, was referred to prosecutors in July last year on allegations that it used #ants that had not been approved for human consumption in #Korea as an ingredient.

It was the only case in which the ministry's special judicial police filed a complaint and sent the case to prosecutors.”

  9. Do ants eat feathers? I mean, protein, right? This crow feather was whole when I noted it by the entrance to an ants' nest on Monday. Today it seems half eaten, although it has barely moved since Monday. Could the ants have taken it apart and down into their nest?

  10. CW: Insects on a plant

    Blackfly being harvested by ants.

As much as I would rather not have this, I am leaving them be - the clematis is doing OK, and the ants are harvesting them, so it's part of the circle of life. #insect #bugs #gardening #ants

  11. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐜🤝 At the #Weizmann Institute of Science in #Israel, researchers built #3D-printed mazes and baited loads to test how well ant teams work together.

They found bigger groups of longhorn crazy #ants solve harder #puzzles than smaller teams, and matched ants against #physics-based #simulations to figure out why.
