Lots of drama happening during the night. And most of the time we only take notice afterwards.
Cat, racoon, crow ... there are several suspects.
At first I spotted some feathers on the ground. And one was moving, just one. So be it could not be the wind.
There were some ants at work, hauling them away. There is nothing like waste in nature.

Hey @futurebird did I create a monster with my patio lights? LED so they can’t be _that_ warm, but warmer than ambient temp I imagine…

More and more people are raising pet ants around the world. They are small, low-maintenance and display complex behaviors that fascinate humans.
But this fascination is leading to a bigger issue: an underground global trade of ants. Wild ants are now popping up in places where they are not supposed to.

The young Eastern redbud tree (_Cercis canadensis_) in the co-op garden is blooming! Today I saw winter ants (_Prenolepis imparis_) feeding from the flowers, regular-sized ants climbing up the trunk, ants replete with nectar climbing down.

A wild appetizer I had the other day. If you don't have lemons nearby, but have oysters and ants, why not?

Queen ant update!
Her brood pile is the same size as her body almost. She has five larvae in silk pupae ready to grow up to be nanitics (in about two weeks)
She’s doing great living in the fountain pen drawer. #antqueen #ants #antkeeping #camponotus #nycants

Cambridge, UK, awash in ant queens since yesterday afternoon. Outstanding weather, sunny, no clouds, high temperatures above 23C. It’s flight day for Lassius alates.

Seeing little ant mounds formed along cracks in the sidewalk and thinking about how they're basically playing Dwarf Fortress down there underground and I'm seeing the hauled-away dirt come out above ground. Every grain in their mounds is another bit of tunnel or nesting chamber down below.

@ak_text 👁️ @futurebird ... crows taking a bath in ants!

I was reading "Ants of North America" (Fisher and Cover) today and found something I need to share. I think... I've uncovered something we all need to talk about.
This is from the entry for Discotheyrea:
"Persistently refered to as 'discos' by the Ant Mafia"
What on earth ... "The Ant Mafia" ??

I've decided that ant nests are just nature's way of letting you know when you're not using your shit enough. "Haven't used your adorable Japanese tea cups in a long time? Well, now they have ant nests in them."
This message brought to you by my Japanese tea cups, and by ants.

@alexwild Your photos often let me wish to become an ant for one day. I'm in awe of these different personalities.
This photo is great for the fans of #MagicInTheMundane! -

I do love this subtle photo of a carpenter ant in the wood galleries. Insect photographers for some reasons don't make that many moody silhoutte photos, I should probably do more of these. #Ants #Insects #photography #Camponotus

The greater #celandine (#Chelidonium #majus) prefers #nitrogenrich #soils and tends to be #thermophilic. In Germany, it grows in #parks and along roadsides. #Seeddispersal occurs via #myrmecochory; #ants are #attracted by means of a #lure (an #elaiosome). In the case of C. majus, this takes the form of a fleshy outgrowth (a #caruncle).

En otras noticias ligeramente relacionadas, tres cosas:
