I’m always happy to see Camponotus castaneus one of the more rare ants in New York City. At first I was disappointed to see two of them fighting each other, but I realized that meant that there must be at least *two* colonies living in close proximity, so when they have their nuptial flight, there is a chance that there will be mated queens! #ants #antsnyc #nycants

A test tube can seem like a small space for such a large, majestic insect, but this mimics what she would have built or found for herself in the wild, a narrow hollow under bark, a repurposed carpenter bee burrow, or a hole excavated with her own mandibles queen ants seal themselves in creating a space with no exit, total darkness and seclusion to maximize moisture and avoid discovery.

Vous avez #Linux ? Ok alors en moins de deux semaines une vulnérabilité a fragilisé le bousin. Le nom de l'exploit ? #CopyFail, qui a utilisé une faille vieille de 9 ans pour se permettre de se mettre Root sur votre machine, et d'y faire ce qu'il veut avec les privilèges qui vont avec. Et tous les risques associés évidemment, inutile de les citer ça ferait une chiée de "ouais on avait deviné". Car ouais les utilisateur•ices de Linux vous être bizarrement plus sensibilisé•es à la sécurité informatique.
Quoi d'autre ? Bah l' #ANTS en roue libre. Rien de neuf.

For some reason hundreds (thousands?) of ants decided to take the palm tree seeds from a felled tree in our garden, and are transporting them in a line into the field next door.

Went to the mailbox just a minute ago to get today's mail (and Saturday's, which we forgot to grab). Pull out the mail and hundreds of tiny ants and ant eggs come tumbling out. Ants everywhere, inside envelopes, inside magazines, inside a small package.
This is not the first time it's happened but this is the first time I've seen it happen this early. Going to have to put control bait at the back of the mailbox.

It’s hard to photograph ants; they rarely stop and are very fast. But there is one moment when they don’t run away—when they’re with aphids, their symbionts. These shiny black ants, Lasius fuliginosus, can be recognized by their heart-shaped heads and are truly glossy. Thanks to good lighting conditions, a tripod, and the aphids, my photos turned out well.
