  1. πŸ¦—πŸ”¬ University of #Sydney researchers found that house #crickets perform "flexible self-protection" by nursing specific injuries, suggesting they experience pain-like states rather than simple reflexes.

The directed behavior indicates a level of conscious experience previously underestimated in #invertebrates. The findings could challenge our approach toward #insects, supporting a growing scientific consensus on their complex cognitive capabilities.

  6. Black Medick for the #WildflowerHour #CarrotsAndPeas challenge (it's in the pea family). Taken last night in failing light; the plant growing in a crack in the paving on my front yard. On the right of the photo is a ladybird, I think possibly a 16-spot? #invertebrates #Swindon #Wiltshire #WildflowerHour #Bloomscrolling #botany #plants #flowers #wildflowers #photography

  12. Wildlflower Wednesday

🌱 Just posted my latest blog for Habitat Gardening. This time covering planting your natives (finally).

🌻 And, for those who are a little more experienced, the seasonal improvement section helps you get real about your climate and changes you may have to make to your native garden.

And I get into composting a little, because it is so important!

πŸ‘‰ Look for the picture of an ugly, rain starved bed of flowers!

πŸ““ As usual, the Resources section at the bottom is jammed with related information for new native gardeners.

    Go Native!

  13. A beautiful lady and her beautiful children! This was a female argiope argentata (pictured here eating a mealworm I offered to her) that lived in my grandma's garden. She survived the loss of a leg and then a violent storm so I was thrilled to see that no only she was thriving but her babies were born as well πŸ’š

  18. πŸ•·οΈπŸ•ΈοΈ #Spiders produce #silk by funneling #protein chains through tapering tubes and spigots that apply protective coatings. The process creates a material that remains flexible at low temperatures and rivals the strength of #steel.

  20. A bit of AI jiggery pokery. This is the nymph of an Olive Dun Mayfly, Naetis rhodani. I photographed it in shallow water in a plastic box, but the artificial background was distracting and naff. Lightrooms AI selection tools allowed me to accurately select the mayfly and smooth the background. It would have taken hours to do the same manually. #Photography #AI #Lightroom #Nature #Invertebrates #Mayfly
