  1. Attend "All About Native Bees"
    Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 6 PM ET / 3 PM PT

🐝Celebrate World Bee Day (May 20) with Garden for Wildlife! Bees are our most important pollinators, but they are often misunderstood. While the agriculturally important honeybee gets the spotlight, our native bees are actually the ecological powerhouses of the ecosystem.

🐝 Surprising facts about native bee behavior in your backyard.
🐝 How to plant a garden that supports them and get it recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat® by the National Wildlife Federation.

  2. First sighting of a Monarch this Spring!

I have several plantings of Butterfly Weed (Asclepius tuberosa) for them to enjoy, but mainly to lay their eggs on. The plants are just now starting to bloom.

🦋 It is very relaxing to sit on my porch and watch butterflies. Just had plant native perennials years ago.

🦋 Related: Carrie Haubner, co‑founder of the Queen City Pollinator Project in Kentucky, tagged a Monarch with a lightweight sticker.

🦋 That Monarch was later found at a Monarch reserve in Mexico. That's a 1600-mile trek! Also feeds into useful conservation dataset.

🦋 Protecting their habitat and increasing populations of their host plant is important. Get involved if you can!

  3. Wildlflower Wednesday

🌱 Just posted my latest blog for Habitat Gardening. This time covering planting your natives (finally).

🌻 And, for those who are a little more experienced, the seasonal improvement section helps you get real about your climate and changes you may have to make to your native garden.

And I get into composting a little, because it is so important!

👉 Look for the picture of an ugly, rain starved bed of flowers!

📓 As usual, the Resources section at the bottom is jammed with related information for new native gardeners.

  4. Feeding birds in the UK?

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has issued new guidance to avoid spreading disease.

✋ Simply put, pause feeding any seeds or peanuts between 1 May and 31 October.

🌻 Also consider bird-friendly planting to provide natural food sources, such as sunflowers, teasels, and ivy.

🚨 The cause of an outbreak of a mysterious and deadly disease in finches in British gardens in 2005 has finally been determined by conservationists.

  9. You may remember that I posted recently about how to support bird nesting.

Yesterday, I had my gardening support wagon out and in it was a wooden box of small tools. A glove lay on top.

🐦 A pair of Carolina Wrens promptly started using my easily available nesting materials to build a nest under the glove in the box!

🤯 It was nearly complete in no time. They used twigs, stems, and leaves that I had broken into small pieces, dried iris leaves, fluffy debris from flowers, etc., and moss from a nearby shady area.

😬 I didn't have the heart to toss this away, so I moved the whole thing over to a bush about a meter away, a much better place. Jammed it between three branches pretty securely.

🤞 I'll check later to see if they accepted the new location.

Will report on all of this as soon as I return. Until then enjoy my blooming Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens), a native vine that has stayed green even through the very cold days we had. Flowers popped out as one of the first flowers for my #NativeBees and other pollinators.

🐦‍⬛ Non-native trees are commonly used in urban settings, but a new study out of Sweden finds that native trees provide more resources and are preferred by urban birds.

🐛 Another study out of the University of Glasgow shows that common woodland birds produce more chicks when surrounded by a greater abundance of native tree foliage.

  16. Be Aware When Spring "Cleaning"

🐞 Check your timing when you begin clearing garden areas in the spring. Beneficial insects may still be overwintering in growth and stems.

🍂 Pic 1: This area of dead, overgrown iris leaves is a good example of a spot to overwinter, if you are a bug, so it was left until they had time to get active. (See link)

🌻 Pic 2: Waiting was not a problem, though. Time was used to create a design to maximize insect population support. Labels on the cleared area show that the design puts shorter natives at the 'top' of the bed and taller natives near the 'bottom'. Species prefer different heights.

🦋 This design also addresses the common view of this bed from beyond the 'top'. Now the many butterflies which will appear soon can easily be seen.

    🔹 Twigs
🔹 Moss or decayed vegetation (hard to tell)
    🔹 Pine needles
🔹 Leaves from grasses and slender flowers
    🔹 Flower stalks
    🔹 Mud

🐦‍⬛ Has Spring nearly sprung in your hemisphere? Then it's time to think of your local birds!

🧹 [Edited to remove meanness] Unaware people near you cleared away leaves and debris last Fall, leaving precious little building material for our feathered engineers.

📉 You can help by taking a little time to make available twigs, last year's dead slender plant leaves, even natural fiber string and yarn. This will help reverse the bird declines we are seeing globally. More nests mean more chicks - and more bird song!

  21. @Kimberley

    Great!
My resources, though, are North America based. I get frustrated responses from folks in the UK about this.

For this reason, we should consider organizing a global fedi network of gardeners who provide practical advice and identify *regional* resources.

One possibility: There could be a single source (blog maybe) updating fedi gardeners of available regional wildlife gardening accounts, regional resources, new relevant posts, and newly identified resources.

Also, a fedigroup.social can be created to auto-boost wildlife gardening posts from gardeners and media sources.

Sorry, I'm an idea guy and all this may be getting over our skis, but let's consider having a fedi goal of being leaders in this effort globally. Seems to be the sweet spot of non-commercial, environment-promoting, and lifestyle improvement.

  23. 🪰 This very small fly landed on my finger last summer. Look at the bands on its tiny, tiny wings.

📷 Pic is a little blurry (had to use one hand quickly to get the shot), but it looks like a "biting midge" (Culicoides spp.). They need a better publicist, evidently.

🍂 It's one of a population in the thick layer of decaying leaves being used as a natural mulch nearby. Bugs like these are what Brown Thrashers and other birds are after when they are looking through leaves for food. We can support declining bird populations by just keeping leaves on the ground or as mulch in beds.

  25. 🌺 There's still time to add a 2026 resolution or two to support nature and wildlife. 🐦‍⬛ You can make a big impact with small actions.

Here's a list that you can scan through to find any resolutions appropriate and do-able for your situation.

These are some of mine. I will report progress here through the year:
✅ Plant 25 new native flowers (within tight budget)
✅ Provide nesting habitat for pollinators
✅ Leave the leaves and save the stems
✅ Execute a long-term social media campaign for invertebrates
✅ Share Xerces resources and conservation tips with 24 friends (done!😆)

🌱 If you want to support birds, butterflies, and native bees in your area, you need to grow the plants that will (1) support the most populations, and (2) be appropriate for your garden space.

✍️ For details on how to do this, see today's post to Habitat Gardening, my blog explaining how to gradually transform your garden (or a section of it) into a supportive conservation zone.

  27. 🥾 Spring wildflower hikes are very popular and rightly so, but Fall wildflower hikes are nice as well.

🌻 They are also instructive for what native pollinators and beneficial insects should have available in my own garden at this time of year.

  37. 🦋 Just saw this ragged Gulf Fritillary, surviving to the end of the season. Not surprised to see it because I do two things:
🔹 Maintain late-blooming flowers for butterflies to feed on
🔹 Allow native Passionvine (Passiflora incarnata) to grow in a large area. This is the *only* host plant for the caterpillars of this species.

🐛 Back in the Spring, I actually saw a caterpillar on a Passionvine leaf. Could this be the same individual?

😋 I add myself to the natural interconnection, a consumer of the Passionfruit and spreader of seeds.

The Magnolias evolved before bees, so flowers invite beetles and many other types of pollinators, some of whom are very messy, with large protective "tepals" (like petals) and plenty of pollen.

They don't really create 'nectar', but produce sweet-smelling sugary secretions that make them wonderful in your garden.

🎞️ New short video released on my Habitat Gardening channel (Fedi's Spectra Video)

🦋 In my garden, a monarch feeds on Mexican sunflowers. Look at the details of the wings. They are perfect. Can't see any visible wear even out to the wing's outer white ovals. I saw this individual for the first time two days before.

🐛 I have been lax in checking for monarch caterpillars on the many clumps of Butterfly Weed growing in the garden, but it is clear that this butterfly emerged very recently.

🌼 In this neighborhood and surrounds, there are likely no other possible locations for Monarch caterpillars than my garden, so it is safe to say that it was here that this butterfly was born and developed.

🎉 Success! This is just as I have designed and planned for years. 😀

Wanted to share this moment with you.

🌻 A short stroll by #NativePlants on a path in my garden. It's a quiet misty morning, after a rain, with birds singing.

💮 When this was recorded in early summer, the large patch of butterfly weed flowers had gone by. Mostly on the left terraces, there were black-eyed susans, but also coreopsis and fleabane in bloom. Anise hyssop was beginning to flower.

🌼 Waiting in the wings for their show are goldenrod and beautyberry, maybe some thistle in there, for late season feeding. But I need to clear out some competion so they can grow.

🪷 Looks like I'll be getting gifts from local pollinators. First, I let locally native Maypops (Passiflora incarnata) grow in my #garden. Complex and beautiful flowers.

🐝 Then I enjoy Carpenter Bees, very important native pollinators, while they do their thing. The caterpillars of the Gulf Fritillary butterfly also eat the leaves as their sole source of food. So I enjoy those butterflies as well.

🥝 Later, when the fruit grows and turns purple, I get Maypops to eat with their tropical tartness. And I don't have to go to the store. Thanks, pollinators!
