There are so many insects in our yard, I often forget that we’re in the middle of a mass extinction. Everyday this gray leaf tea bush swarms with bees. I’ve even had a wasp problem in my studio lately. (Fortunately the spider-eating, mud-nest-building, no-stinging kind.) In just a few years we went from lifeless lawn to generative landscape. More than 2,500 native trees have been planted in Devon this winter - the first steps towards restoring a temperate rainforest that once covered large swathes of the west coast of Britain.
I'm currently reading Guy Shrubsole's wonderful book, 'The Lost Rainforests of Britain', so I'm thrilled to learn that progress is being made restoring this ancient and very special habitat.

The Sea Club Rush (Bolboschoenus maritimus) and Reeds (Phragmites australis) roots have established well. Hopefully the winter weather will be kind to them and their roots will be nicely established.
